My father was a Canadian soldier serving with Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders in WWII. His company sergeant major had the company fall in and every 5th soldier got to spend the remained of the war living in a posh hotel guarding Dutch collaborators. The entire top two floors of the hotel housed the collaborators.
Wow! Did your father ever say what happened to the collaborators or what the sentence was? I imagine treason and shot? Were each cast taken on merit?
@@gheffz No, he rarely ever spoke about his experiences in Europe during the war.
@@RonaldJMacDonald I thought so, Ron ... I know so many WWII vets that don't mentioned it at all, so I am not surprised ... I just asked in-case he did mention given he was directly involved with guarding collaborators. I am from Brisbane, Australia, FYI.
@@gheffz - I`ve been to Brisbane twice. I`m retired from the Canadian Navy. I live in the Niagara Region of Ontario.
It's interesting that those in such a position to decide where collaborators would be housed under guard that they would choose to house those collaborators in a posh hotel. Could the reason possibly be that those who wanted to house the collaborators in near luxury knew even then that those collaborators would not be held accountable for their crimes against their fellow Dutch to include Jews?? Could it be that those who decided to put them up in comfort knew the same collaborators could very likely rule their lives again as government functionaries, or their boss at work..
Everyone looked so brave after the liberation. The same people, including the police collaborated with the Germans and looked away, or were even actively involved when people were deported. My father, after returning from a German POW camp found his job taken by the very man who had betrayed him. He never was restored in his right because the traitor knew many people in high places who also were the first to reclaim their power.
The police in that clip where scumbags too
History repeats itself. I know exactly what you’re saying.
At 1:46 the police have black uniforms, Riding (Jack) boots, and peeked caps. Very reminiscent of the Gestapo. lacking is the MP40

From what WW2 Veterans (one SOE) told me, Holland had the least resistance in Nazi occupied Europe.
No, must have been Denmark?
At least we fought when they invaded our country, Austria just let them in. Plus who are you to judge about "how much resistance" there was in the Netherlands? You can't even get the name of the country right, ergo your comment are misinformed or willfully condescending.

Chances are there isn't a single person in this film alive today, kind of eerie.
of course the widescale collaboration of the Dutch Civil Service and Police Force, in the roundup and deportation of Dutch Jews remains to this day uncommented on and unpunished, while everyone bangs on endlessly about Polish antisemitism. these same cops escorting these guys, a month ago searched for and deported Anne Frank and her family.
@LET IT BE TIME WILL TELL We should never inflate numbers... about 80% of Dutch Jews were deported, of whom, less than 5% returned. Those numbers are bad enough, we should stick to them though. And yes, of the Western countries, the Dutch numbers were the highest, by far.
@LET IT BE TIME WILL TELL Maybe they had a beef about them controlling diamond industry and banking.
Horrible
@zaraza608 he's right.
Tom Swift No, he’s actually not. Controlling I am assuming means a ownership (including controlling majority shares) or an executive leadership role. Then as it is now, the heritage of those are quite broad. Anti Semitic propaganda used straight up falsified information to solidify support and compliance, focusing anger while distracting from the slow depletion of civil liberties and consolidation of control. It is a tactic that has been repeated throughout history against many, and today is usually used as bait to build support and create a source of capital inflow for far right groups. The angrier they can make their supporters, the better.

Misleading
All credit to the Dutch people for treating these collaborators with such civility after all they had been through and the hardships suffered the urge for retribution must have been great, But the Dutch people are more civilised than that, I’m sure some acts of revenge must have taken place how could they not? But from what I see here they mostly acted in a civilised manner I’m pleased to say which is more than collaborators deserve.

My family has had Dutch and Danish family friends who experienced the WWII Occupation. To survive, one had to compromise some; be smart. If you openly defied the Germans you would be killed. But there were a wide range of what you could do to resist and maintain some independence. Such as a secret radio... Resistance newspapers were extremely popular in Denmark. A close family friend was in the Danish Resistance. A doctor he was in charge of Resistance newspapers underground distribution in the Horsens-Aarhus area. He also relayed Resistance Communications. The Gestapo arrested him in late 1944; he was imprisoned in Germany till war's end. Fellow Resisters smuggled in parts and built a radio. They listened to the BBC Danish Service.
It’s odd how they all had suite and ties on and women with nice dress or coat 🧥 yet they were poor as a church mouse...
It is the same with the generals. They turn up well kitted out and the ordinary soldier is open-handed.

No excuses people died with holding information from the germans i salute them brave people
Who the guys in black uniform ? Police? So how come they work with the Nazis from 1940. Then arrest collaborators? But police were Collorators? Same as the French police ? A lot of these police were collaborators
@Maximus H
the guys in black are policeman, many members of the Amsterdam policeforce were deployed to assist the germans to pick up the Jewish residents of Amsterdam.
Only a few cases are known of policeman who refused.
@@spring-jo8xv Most of the killers and brutal bastards at the extermination camps were German Police Officers in civilian life. Most escaped war crimes prosecution and execution after the war and simply returned to their respective police departments and lived out their lives. America fucked up when they caved to German pressure that going after these psychos was revenge motivated and the Americans wanted to avoid descent and civil disruption in post-war Germany. Hardly any fascist killers were actually brought to justice relative to the huge numbers of those who escaped it. Sad to think these assholes got away with so many murders of men, women and many children during the war.
Why is there no sound
Did I miss something? Must've blinked.
They never looked under that blokes hat
I dont see Prince Bernhardt ......
He was probably hiding in England, sleeping next to degaul of france? only a guess
Yeh the Bernhard the SSer
Die was aan het stelen.
Collaberation was on different levels from police to accountants. This doesnt mean that they were killing and dobbing people in not all of these. But they still need to find out how much on each individual.
Well, there was collaberation out of survival, necessity and law abiding behavior and there was collaberation out political Nazi motives or to enrich oneself at the expense of others. A big difference. The problem is not that it isn't investigated after the war but to prove out of what motives someone did what they did. Many Dutchmen after the war have been initially falsy accused of collaberating while they did this to mislead the Germans in order to save lives or help the resistance.
No sound !!!!
