This was great. I could feel the bosses at the big reefing companies shouting at their screens, “somebody stop him from telling people they can grow amazing corals with just a basic set up and water changes! We have doodads, widgets. and potions to sell!”
Amazing interview. Great questions asked.
So glad to hear him say waterchanges. For some reason the hobby seems to become water change averse. I'm always amazed how often this will solve issues.
I often suggest large waterchanges when people are having coral issues and you'd be surprised how much people resist doing them and search for a different solution.
Great video tonight. Another great hobbyist who believes in keeping it simple. I’m going to keep saying we need Abe and Meckley at the same time. Two ends of the spectrum.
I've been watching your interviews for a long time and love them. It's great to see all the different methods the "experts" do. For the newer hobbyists who are watching and hearing Jason's seemingly lax approach need to remember he lives and breaths his farm. large regular water changes is the way but ironically for us hobbyist we tend to forget or life gets in the way. Jake Adams from reefbuilders did a great video at Jasons a few years ago giving a full tour of his farm and well worth a watch.
What a great video! I’ve bought from Jason many times before but after seeing this video I love how down to earth his reefing approach is! Thanks for taking the time to do this Jason, and Keith has what seems to be polished interviewing skills. Well done! 👍🏻🍻🤛🏻
Poor Keith, like pulling teeth trying to get information out of Jason LOL. ‘’ Ahhh, I’ll test maybe once a month, once every 3 months……”. Nah, don’t do that ….nope never do anything like that …LOL. All we got out of him was he does water changes….. not sure he even gave a percentage 😂😂😂
Jason is a smart guy, he's not going to give up his secret to getting the crazy colors he gets... bwahahah
Great videos again man 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Jason isn’t giving any secrets away haha
Great show - water changes baby!
The best nugget is more flow to get them to grow!
Awesome no nonsense approach to reefing.
Yeah this was a tough interview, hats off Keith for doing your best. Nothing against Jason, some people are talkers and great to interview, and some people are just generally less chatty. He has a reputation for stunning corals and to hear WC's are his secret sauce for everything he does was a hard pill to swallow. Especially hard because I think most of us were expecting him to say, "I dose X supplement" or "I feed X product" or "my nutrients are kept at this exact level". But to hear he rarely tests anything but alk and just does huge WC's... maybe that's the secret and we're all over complicating it. 😅🤷♂
I think he does a whole lot more than he is leading on. Especially for colors. I mean look at his brilliance with power washing rock encrusted with coral. That’s next level and he talks about it nonchalantly. People over here are boiling rocks, dissolving them with acid, and his approach was basically power wash it for 5 min and you are done!
Regarding the issues with the shallow-water corals, maybe they are designed for the tide to such a degree that they *need* to be above water for a period a day? Just thinkin' out loud.
Man i can tell by the body language that he holds tons of secrets in him, and Keith is like digging hard but its just wont come... Hahaha good try keith. Jason got his secrets definitely to hold up on to his business.
theres no secrets involved
He said if his alk gets to 11-12 he likes to lower it. I can't for the life of me lower it. It's constantly 12 and i do 20% water change every other week and don't dose anything. How could i lower it?
I'm happy for Jason for being strong doing his water changes. I believe that is a plus when maintaining Acros and other SPS in general. Abe does that too! I would think that Reef Crystals will keep a great Mg for Montipora spp. If people would only put away their supposed "laziness" (I believe that most people that actually say they are lazy need to stop "promoting" them as so, cause it's a negative aspect and not a virtue!!!!) and try that. We would see more and more hobbyists testifying positive results. Doing water changes like he does is the same as to add some of that alk, Ca, Mg to some extend. It is probably cheaper in the long run in terms of maintenance and he can probably maintain those numbers more stable, also keeping the ionic balance (salinity), not to mention the removal of organics, detritus and yellow compounds in a regular basis. He must like that clear water he saw in the wild! Less skimmer maintenance and less carbon usage. To add some aminos would be great, I would think. maybe there are some things he does and didn't want to talk about. His answers were too short and simple to tell the truth. Again, this hobby is much simpler than many paint. There are way too much crap sold out there that no one actually need!
I personally don't like the look of his systems now comparing to the halides, and it's hard to believe that he is having the exact same results in coverage than before, by the video, but I'm happy he is happy. That is what matters. I wonder what will be his notes about the new lights in a year or 2 from now.
Love Anacroporas! I still didn't get used in terms of liking those cartoon names, though. Some days I feel a huge pressure in my ears when I her some for those cartoon names. LOL! It's something that I need to concentrate to hear and not to be sad/mad about it. LOL! Please pray for me. I think the hobby lost big time changing the way they refer to the name of the organisms the way it is.
I'm working so much and have so little time lately that it isn't even funny, but I was happy to find some time in my life to watch this video. The more we work, the better we feel, though! We have to thank God for our health and the job we have! The boys in this video have one of the best jobs in this world. :) Thanks for making it available to us, Keith! All the best to both of you!
Jason Fox just wings it. Lol. I feel better about my approach now.
jason fox is the reefer in me 😂. his beliefs align with mine
Great show. Tons of valuable info from a couple laid back, successful hobbyist.
What an OG reefing gangsta
I’m almost inclined to believe that Jason is holding out on his secret . There is no way that his magic with coral colour is solely based on water changes . If you believe that then none of you have ever reefed for very long to know better
I don’t know, my stuff is usually happy when I stop messing around with so much and just do regular water changes and dose kalk.
He said he does a weekly 300g water change on his 900g tank or more if something looks off. I doubt many people do that
hes not holding out
all these stupid controllers and auto testing bs and everything automated always fails eventually, the easier the better and it works
@@mikedelape6609 agree100%
I dunno man, I have 3 tanks, a 60 gallon, a 150g and a 350g.. The tank that does the best for me is the 60 gallon because I do about 20% WC ever week, and its by far my best looking. The 150 and 350 I dose because I don’t want to change out 20% water on those and those are typically the tanks I’m always messing with cause something goes wrong.
For everyone saying Jason isn't telling his "secrets", I disagree. Keeping Acropora isn't as hard as most people think, it's about experience and having good husbandry, etc. Once the system is aged and established, it's no harder than any other tank.
Water changes are 100% necessary. Laziness is why people don't do water changes. It's a huge mistake not to do water changes.
$1500 a month would eat my entire check XP
Keith after watching all your interviews we ( your fans) know all about your aquarium systems and we know that what you are doing works well so maybe a little more interviewee and less interviewer not trying to be negative what you are doing is great.
I do hesitate to talk about what I do since I do it often but the issue is that I am trying to relate a relevant point to my guest who may not know what I do.....so it is a fine balance.
Why do water changes if you don’t have to, we do all this chemistry to maintain or water and then your going to pour it down the drain? I’m not saying no water changes just do them when necessary
PS I think Jason just sold a million buckets of Reef Crystals do you think he gets it for free.
No i undertand why not many people interview Jason. Guys approach is so simple. Chinese leds and lot of water changes. No computer gizmos. No carbon no gfo. Same old salifer kits. Lol Brs will never interview him. Guy believes in water changes.
Pretty terrible but oddly informative…. Mr Fox does lots of water changes and buys coral from wholesalers… that’s you’re lot 😂
