Kali Uchis is a really great, creative pop artist. She released an album a couple of years back called Isolation which is well worth a listen (and is sang in English). Her song After The Storm with Bootsy Collins is a personal favourite.
I absolutely adore Kali and have for years! She obviously was popular before but tiktok really amplified that. I hate the app but it’s really popularising artists music old and new
Love this, objectively looking at popular music and pointing out its good and bad aspects. Without the usual ‘this music is stupid and bad’ attitude you might see from other videos like this, cool stuff.
Oh I mean he still definitely has his preferences, and you can tell they don't center around pop music. He certainly gives critiques... "It's essentially 2 chords" is his way of saying "It's boring" or "We keep waiting for something to happen" or "How long can you listen to the same progression of chords?" He certainly has those thoughts, just doesn't come out and say them directly.
@@reeepingk Which is a weird critique to make. A song doesn't need harmonic complexity to be good, and having 2 or 4 chords doesn't make a song bad. Heroin by Velvet Underground is just IV-I for 7 minutes and it's not boring because of that. It's not the harmony that's lacking, it's everything else.
@@lucasthemycologist You can certainly HAVE non complex songs that are good, but the complexity needs to be made up for elsewhere. In that song it seems to tell a story. There are swells and attenuated parts, etc etc. My personal preference in pop music is that, individually, the songs are fun to listen to. But if you listen to pop music often or have been listening to it for a long time, it all starts to sound the same and boring. The songs are well produced and sound great, but ALL of the songs are well produced and they ALL start to sound similar. It's not that single pop song is "bad." It's more that, in the context of pop over the last 20 years, it's extremely similar to every other pop song, therefore it's boring to listen to. Furthermore, if you are musically inclined (I am not), you can recognize that these songs are just the same chord progressions over and over again and that'll likely be boring for you compared to music that is more complex.
So refreshing to have someone so wholesome and knowledgeable reviewing popular music! Kinda makes me wanna go grab my guitar or kb and just start playing. Amazing videos Rick!!!
One day i was watching, confident that it was a green screen, until i say his reflection moving with him in one of those windows in the background (but it was a different angle than the one in this video)
Follow rick and you'll understand that this is not a green screen. That's his studio. The guy is a pro musician/producer and music is a huge part of is life for decades.
Some of these songs I wasn't looking at the screen while you played them, and I thought "Hey that guitar in there is really nice" so I look and notice it's just Rick playing along🤣😂
Rick I love these vids. I wonder what you think about the idea that since we have the opportunity for more production these days, there doesn’t need to be as much a focus on the chords. I think Montero is a good example. I was surprised to find it was only two chords when playing it, because the production goes so many places.
Idk how much music should be about production and less about music itself, but you could be right. But I have always felt that music should not be judged by the production or who performs it. But many people do, so I think it is okay.
Relying on production is fine if you're backed by a major studio that spends ridiculous amounts of money promoting your trash. Poor people have to work hard to do something innovative to get anywhere, so you'd better bring production, talent and musicianship.
A lot of hit rock songs are very simple harmonically. All The Small Things has three power chords in a progression that never changes for the entire song. Don't Stop Believin' is mostly the ubiquitous I-V-vi--IV. The verses of Basket Case are basically Pachelbel's Canon, minus a G chord. That's why I find it ironic when rock enthusiasts say pop music is bad because the chords are simple. Chords are the foundation of a song. You can do so much on top of them.
I don’t know, it changes the feel of some songs. Still, I wouldn’t buy any of these. The lyrics to the songs in Spanish are dire, as are the ones in English.
Eh, not really in my opinion. If it isn’t in the song, it’s not in there for a reason. Guitar might not fit the vibe of the song, and guitar has been a big part of music for such a long time it’s getting kinda tiring.
Leave the Door Open is such a great song. The most listened songs are basically the ones that you can dance to in my opinion. If it has a cool rhythm, people can dance to it therefore they get a lot of listens every day. I also feel like social media platforms like TikTok etc. effects the charts the most. Most of these singers/artists are famous because of their songs blowing up on TikTok.
I love complex music. I usually don't listen to what's at the top of the charts these days. But sometimes, less is more. Sometimes all it takes is three chords and a sick groove to get your butt shaking. And sometimes all you want is a tune that "sounds good and you can dance to it."
Bruno Mars is consistently the most impressive contemporary pop artist. He's going to have some real longevity in this industry. Nice stuff as always Rick!
This will be a long-ish comment, but I've watched a dozen other videos on this channel without commenting. Rick, I always notice that you're willing to enjoy all the pop songs, and that makes a huge difference to me. You've pretty much earned the right to be snobby about music, and you're still there to enjoy it if possible. I like that. You also somehow add your guitar to most of the songs without being annoying. It's very rare that any guitarist could just play over every song without being annoying. Both of the things I'm mentioning show me your musicianship and your love of music, and this is part of what I like about your videos. Now, a lot of modern pop songs are really all about the vocal, and in particular, about the singer's sex appeal. We can try to analyze these songs in terms of pure musical quality, but when it comes to pop music, a lot of the appeal is the sexiness of the vocal. Blame Elvis, I guess. Or Sinatra, or... Anyway, if you sometimes wonder what makes a song popular (while you're looking for "what makes it great") sometimes fans are mainly reacting to the sexiness of the singer.
"Now, a lot of modern pop songs are really all about the vocal, and in particular, about the singer's sex appeal." Topline - or the main vocal melody of a song that rides above chord progressions - is the most important thing in pop music. There are pop songwriters who are known specifically for their ability to write Toplines.
I was listening without watching and didn't realize that was Rick playing along. I was impressed by the inclusion of actual guitar in modern songs. And then. . .
Don't know if it's just me but if guitar was in every song i'd be very bored of it by now, i love hearing songs with just keyboards bass and drums, especially with horn sections and other strings and whatnot. There'd be a big hole in music without guitar though, obviously. The almost David T vibe Rick put over the beiber song did make it way cooler
Bruno Mars is extremely talented. Every piece of music he is involved in, is solid. I’m not really into his style of music, but there is no denying his talent. Great artist.
Man, Bruno Mars, Anderson Pak, and The Weeknd are really carrying modern pop. The songwriting talent of those three alone makes up for any garbage that makes it onto to the top 10 in my opinion.
GuyNamedSean Bruno Mars, Lorde, SOPHIE, and Katie Perry are the reasons pop is where it is today, we’re a lucky species to have gotten to hear them all. RIP SOPHIE
Rick has a big heart: always looking for the nice aspects (sound/progression/voicing/arrangement/sonic texture/production values) of each of a bunch of bland songs. Rick is also full of joy: enthusiastic to detect patterns and say something meaningful even in a dismal musical landscape. Sometimes he stumbles on something unusual and more rewarding.
How refreshing to hear real instruments, melodic-natural sounding vocals and a song with harmonic intelligence. Thank you Bruno and Anderson. And thank you, Rick, for your ever-intersting analysis.
As an aspiring producer working with a lot of young pop singers, and having basically the same taste in music as Rick, I find this very educational hearing his perspective on this stuff.
The Bruno/Paak song is the real deal. Period. No pretense, no posing. Just solid soul in the Motown/Philadelphia International vibration. Delfonics, Stylistics, Miracles, etc. It's about time someone brought this back. This has elevated the listening tastes of today's kids.
@@cole_bh0373 Well it isn't, not fully. There are many objective measures of quality. Why else would distinguished classical composers, jazz/motown cats and rock legends be revered and loved for decades/centuries, while nobody is going to remember the name Cardi B in 10 years? The only people who call music subjective are the same people who unironically admire period blood paintings and random splatters on a canvas. Art deserves standards.
@@jameskyle3466 I mean, why do common people remember classical composers if not because of how much people like you talk about them? I know about(for ex) Villa Lobos, studied him a lot and really like his production, but here's the thing: it's not something I'd download and listen to on my way to work, when I'm chilling at home, on a club, gathering with my friends, etc. Actually, I can't imagine a situation where I'd think "hmm what about some Villa Lobos?".
Bruno Mars' musical/genre knowledge is what puts his songs in league ahead of his contemporaries. Even in Unorthodox Jukebox, each song felt like a tribute to classic band: "Locked out of Heaven" and the Police, "Treasure" and the Jackson 5 or Billy Joel in "When I was Your Man." I agree. I listen only to classical music and listen to music to feel it and get feelings and emotions, that i can't find in every music which us not classical. Modern pop mostly doesn't have it, but Bruno Mars can make me feel like this to a certain degree. Most music that can do this and isn't classical is Earth, Wind and Fire and other music of that kind which is probably the reason for liking Bruno Mars.

During the peaches verses when you were putting some fun chords to it, it made it so much more interesting. I really wish more pop producers would push for things like that in songs today. You can totally loop a groove for 3 minutes, but adding variety on top can really change that 3 minutes up.

i agree 100%
Yep but still if you compare the 1st chick and lil nas spreadleg x there is a huge difference

Yea, particularly on the Bieber tune. I was like “Oooooooo that’s nice...oh wait. It’s Rick.”
Same....
Music is all about the vibe man however it gets there
A lot of hit rock songs are very simple harmonically.
@@VOIP4ME so true
My takeaway was: There isn't a single song that isn't improved by the addition Rick's guitar playing.
exactly what I thought! 👍
I really liked that "Driver's License" he listened on the last video, but isn't the same thing without his guitar. That's really funny
Leave the Door Open is fine as it is.
Leave The Door Open is such a good, well written song. I’ve been waiting for Rick to talk about it ever since its release.
And sometimes all you want is a tune that "sounds good and you can dance to it."
true!
True. Complexity has nothing to do with whether I like a song.
So many classic songs are very simple. In most cases it's better and more memorable.
Bruno Mars is consistently the most impressive contemporary pop artist. He's going to have some real longevity in this industry. Nice stuff as always Rick!
Indeed it’s true that Bruno holds up well against his contemporaries. However, when compared to his antecedents, he’s barely mediocre.
John Mayer as well
I'm not a fan, but I respect his musicality and agree with your take on him. He'll outlast many other contemporaries.
John Mayer
because he actually writes real songs and uses real musicians, as opposed to just cobbling s't together on a computer.
"Now, a lot of modern pop songs are really all about the vocal, and in particular, about the singer's sex appeal."
Topline - or the main vocal melody of a song that rides above chord progressions - is the most important thing in pop music.
There are pop songwriters who are known specifically for their ability to write Toplines.
Every time you're adding the guitar part the song goes 10 times better
I was listening without watching and didn't realize that was Rick playing along. I was impressed by the inclusion of actual guitar in modern songs. And then. . .

@@cole_bh0373 Is that what you've gleaned? You are mistaken. Or a button was pressed.

I thought it was gonna be some boomer roasting or something, but Rob made me ashamed of even considering de idea
I thought the same thing! I thought it was going to be him ranting about the drop in quality of music. But not only was he really into it, his lightening ability to really break things down was fantastic!
Bruno Mars listened when Uncle Larry said " remember when songs had chords."
Actually, Bruno Mars, his producers, and his engineers ignore the boomer bullshit that you attribute to a FAKE Uncle, and that is one of a million reasons why he has sold more records than the Who and Led Zeppelin combined.
Lol and here I thought the metal and the rock community had many elitists. Looks like even the some people in the pop community have it way worse
@@frankmiro381 Total certified units combined. Led Zeppelin have almost 300 million in sales altogether, including non-certifiable units, which makes sense for a band of the 1970s.
People are listening to Uncle Rick here. My 78-year old father knows Rick Beato on his own. Don't underestimate Uncle Rick's influence.
@@frankmiro381 you are really comparing the who and led zeppelin to bruno mars.
“Leave the door open” deserves it’s own video, for shure!!!
Yeah I really wanna see what they show when the If you Hungry I got the filets line comes up 😅
I believe Charles Cornell did one if ur interested
