- Hi all, yes once again ive been spending!
A slight upgrade to the pannier tank, i now own this beautiful 4-6-0 Thompson B1 locomotive in 5” gauge, named Mayflower.
Hopefully you enjoy this video of me showing you around the loco, how it works and some running shots.
Thanks as always to Brent and Brian for helping me with the locomotive.
Ollie for a couple clips.
James for not blowing up the Pannier Tank
And to my other friends who make this such a fun hobby.

I really appreciated the explanation of all the controls. Steam engines are a fascination to me but a bit of a mystery.
Oh even after a decent while of owning if, im still mystified by some of it mate 😂😂
I've been wanting a choo-choo like this since I was a young lad
Its worth the wait!
Great purchase and a smart looking loco. Looking forward to seeing it run again next year.
Thanks Scott, i cant wait!
A lovely video. Conjours up all the beauty of the LNER. Good luck for 2022!
Thanks so much!
A fantastic purchase!, Eric! I always wondered how you operate these 5" gauge steam locos, now I know! I'm so envious, the 5" gauge steam really does appeal, maybe one day.
Im glad you like it! Yeah it all seems a bit overwhelming at first, but you soon get used to it! I deffo reccomend its great fun

I was part of 'Mayflower's support crew for a number of years and helped through two rebuilds.
Small world hey! Its a fine looking loco. A friend of ours Bruce is involved with it too
Amazing!!!
As a kid i was OBSESSED with these steam trains. A local park used to give rides on these.
Cool hobby you have though. 👍🏼
Awesome! Its so much fun to be honest, just forget the world for a few hours and enjoy it. 😍
There used to be a club at tingly with a track, station, tunnels etc used to go as a kid great times
Nice Loco Eric, I like the B1's and green would be the colour for me too.
Great Video, looking forward to seeing you and your purchases again some time.
Hope the further repairs go well.
Cheers.
Cheers mate yeah im sure we will catch up in person some time 👌🏼
This Whole thing is a Work of Art Driven by Passion.
Thankyou so much!
Totally Cool! So interesting ! Have a great time!
Thanks a bunch Mark!
Brilliant! Lovely loco, lovely location, filming, commentary etc etc. What more? Dunno. Brilliant! All the best.
Appreciate that, thanks a bunch. Hopefully more next year when the weather brightens up!
Fantastic Finale to 2021 & more to look forward to next year.Hope you are fully recovered from being ill last week.
Cheers Mike! Yeah getting there, still have some lasting symptoms but nothing bad. Happy to be free again!
Its a stunner Eric, lovely addition to your collection mate.
Glad you like it steve!
Yeah thanks for making video, that was fantastic to see great looking locomotives.
So glad you like it, thanks for dropping by 🙂
Fantastic!
My son loves trains and buses
Congratulations Eric, lovely looking loco.
Thanks so much, i love it!
Cracking video, pure freaking joy 💖
Thanks!
Stunning loco
Cheers!
Very informative, Eric. Thank you!
Thanks for watching 🙂
Awwwwwh very nice!!..the layout never mind the engines would cost a chunk of change might be out of my price bracket but lovely to watch thanks for sharing!!
Cor just a touch mate! The railway itself has been expanded over about 25 years, we spent most of the summer just building a new carriage shed to put into perspective the time gone in. Its super rewarding though.
@@UndergroundEric fairplay to you!!..enjoy
Lovely loco - lucky enough to run some oils Bassett lowke 0 gauge steam sometimes - can’t beat the real thing!
Very nice, bet they are great fun to play with!
ua-cam.com/video/U33aRrc7FS8/v-deo.html
Thanks for a great video Eric. I am nearly at the finishing stage of my Springbok. In the smokebox now, doing the steam pipes (using 10mm copper fittings!). Next stage is to get it running on air, then put it all together. Take care.
Cheers Geoff, interesting! Maybe we can get them together some day.
Have a look into the bogie issues that i talk about in the video, as itl be easier to sort during the build!
@@UndergroundEric Hi Eric. Yes I know about the bogie issue, but that is already made from when I bought the B1. I have already thinned the cylinder covers, but that's probably not enough. Will carry on with the rest of it, but it's freezing here now, and not suitable for any work, Grrr!! Cheers.
@@VTOmanifan hopefully it works out! Good luck with it bud
Hi dear I just finished air test on my engine stembok 7 1/4" gauge. Almost at complete

Love this mate
Cheers pal! 👌🏼👌🏼
very nice enjoy!
Thanks!!
Very enjoyable Eric. Saw the real one a few weeks ago here in South Wales..so its great to see the 5" version. It looks great. All the best.
Thanks Tim, yeah i think the real loco is stunning so to have a mini one is awesome.
Funnily enough my friend Bruce who owns the other railway i mentioned, is one of the crew on the real Mayflower! 🙂

Imgur fam, assemble!
Great Loco Eric !
Thanks a bunch
Hi Eric thanks for sharing a drivers "live" view. With regard to the reverse lever is it possible to squeeze a small length of rubber/plastic tube over one of `pins` to make it easier to rotate.
Hey mate, im thinking of removing one of the levers and looking into a better method, its just a tad time consuming to use which becomes frustrating if you need to shunt the loco about!
Definitely NOT a poor man's hobby, WOW 👍
It is what you make it. Can always join a club and use club locos if they have their own for example
Top video again mate ☺️
Cheers dude! People seem to appreciate the look into our hobby which is nice
"If you're looking at getting something like this...." - Yeah, most of us have a bonkers Noddy railway line in our gardens to accommodate it lol
Still, enjoy your loco :-)
There are a LOT of model engineering clubs in the UK! Many of them even have club locos you can use if you cant afford your own.
@@UndergroundEric Hear you bud, it was meant to be a cheeky comment but might have come across a tad too cheeky lol - not my intention of course. Just stumbled across this video by chance and I have to say it's an impressive setup you have - it's both fascinating how the engines function but also kind of crazy the way you sit on them
@@jippyjester haha no not at all dont worry!
To be fair a lot of people see this and just think well i could never get into that but they are deffo wrong! 😀
Its a fun hobby and is what you make it really. Ive met some great people through it also!
I still find it a bit crazy the pulling power they have if im honest!
@@UndergroundEric In terms of torque, is it similar to, say, a kart engine or large lawn mower? Or perhaps more? I've seen these pulling along several people in carriages before so I'm guessing more than you might expect....
@@jippyjester id probably say a lot more to be honest, the carriages are steel usually so a 2 man lift and this will pull probably 8 or so without too much trouble. The biggest issue is getting enough traction to be honest!
For the riding truck: didn't GUV's run in Maroon early on? That would fit with the MK1
Oooh that would be a shout, i need to do some research into it i think!
Very nice locomotive and garden setup , is it your garden my son loves it
Thanks, its a close friends railway 🙂
Can l say how much I have enjoyed watching your videos, I am looking into building my own layout, I am trying to meet some people like yourself to gain as much information as possible before I start. I am drawn to 5 gauge and realise it will be costly, that is why I would like chat to some kind people with some experience or join a local club. I am based in Lincolnshire, can I ask where you are based or do you know of any local people to myself or clubs.
Great videos. Any chance of you doing a run down on how to operate your 5" class 20 chopper at some point?
A very nice loco. I just bought an A4 Pacific LNER MALLARD in 5". Looking forward to running it. Can I ask about the PULLMAN coaches? They look really well made.
What are you going to get next Eric mayflower ship !!! Looks like your having a great time mate great fun keep it up
Haha! I suppose there has to be a limit somewhere 🤣🤣
Nice one dude merry xmas🙂🎄✌️
You too!
Little bit of Chad as he went off into the distance too.
Very nice loco! Also I think 5" gauge tube stock would look great if you could find any.
It would be awesome, i would love a 4 car Metropolitan A60 stock. Maybe one day!
Do you do exhibitions or can people visit your place for viewing ? I would be happy to pay to see your models 👍🙏
Very nice model there Eric. :)
Glad you like it!
What a Fantastic item. My First thought was How Much did that lot Cost..?
I just spent a Small fortune on my Classic Car. If I came home with that my other half would Literally Murder me.
She only just copes with me Spending Cash on my 30yr Old Car. ( E.G. Spending a Few $$$ on a Bigger Exhaust, even though the Old one was just Fine..!)
That and the 'OO" layout that I spend on too..!!
Nice Hobby mate. I am a Tad Green wiv Envy..! Thanx for the Entertainment..!!
Cheers from Kim in Downunderland..! 😎
Hi! Glad you like it. Yes i too enjoy my cars! I have an old 1980s vw polo that ive spent far too much on, just sold my R33 GTR skyline sadly also.
The loco is worth probs 7-8k, then the other bits also add up to quite a bit!
I probs own a tad over 20k of 5” stock at the moment, not a cheap hobby!
Well with railway related items I always say heart first, brain later haha
You buy it with your heart and your brain tells you after "WHAT ON EARTH HAVE YOU DONE" 🤣🤣 unless your other half beats your brain to it hahaha 😆
Brilliant video eric, will look forward to 5 inch next year but i will still stick around your channel to see what your up to 😃👍
Haha this is me all over 🤣 king of impulse buys!
Thanks, will be more of the oo gauge stuff for the next couple months
She looks beautiful does your channel have a playlist on the miniature railway if it does I will give you a subscription
There should be a 5” gauge playlist with them all in :) thanks for watching
@@UndergroundEric you welcome I'm going to subscribe
We're are you based do you have Instagram I love to visit your railway I been a miniature fan for 21 years but haven't been on one or driven a loco
1st time here ...great video....great track layout you've got there...is it private or "club" owned?.....i think i saw you new "mayflower" some 10 years ago here in southwest germany at a meeting in Sindelfingen where they have a large 5"gauge track in a park....nice layout there too...some other british guests were there too running their stock....i'm still with my H0 and 00 gauge...enough to do there.....:-D
suppose that's the problem with aquiring second hand stuff.....you only really find out the issues once you're running it at home for a while....good luck...:-)
Thanks for watching! The track is owned by a good friend of mine and is at his home so is a private railway.
Id imagine there are a few B1s about that are painted up as Mayflower, but you never know eh!
And yes, second hand life! Ah well 🙂
ua-cam.com/video/U33aRrc7FS8/v-deo.html
Are they considered model trains or real locomotives?
I would like to get a 5” gauge engine but I will never have the money. The closest I’ve got is an old wilesco steam roller that’s currently in retirement.-Das Mann
Steam roller sounds like fun! Tbh in 5” you can just start small and work your way up
In the U.K do you need any sort of planning in order to have a track on your own land? thx Great watching the videos.
Not that im aware of mate! 🙂
Just got to be careful if having public as passengers with insurance ect, though we dont do that here.
Glad you enjoy them, thanks!
That goes pritty
Such a lovely investment i think!
Curious what are the start up costs for a steam engine like this? Seems like a very expensive hobby to get into
You are looking at a few thousand onwards, obviously the bigger the loco, the bigger the cost.
I prefer to look at is as an investment though really, since youd get the money back if selling up. It introduces you to many great people though and is a wonderful hobby!
Once you are over the initial cost its relatively cheap to continue
The start up costs are a second hand lathe, some basic tooling a d a lot of fun in a workshop making your own engine.
How could the small train possible to handle the weight of 1 person of adult?
She is beautiful.
Hi Eric i do 5inch railway myself i love doing steam would there be a possibility i could have a look at this railway. i know its private worth asking.
No sorry its not my railway to invite strangers to
@@UndergroundEric no problem Eric take care 👍🏻
Who’s your and Brent’s Mk1s and Pullmans made by? Looking at some scale coaches myself but thinking I might end up having to build them.
Brents stock is all made by himself, there is quite a staggering amount of stock out there made by him and owned by others. My own coach im not actually 100% but its a bit of a level above brents own mk1s as it has full interior detail ect.
Brents pullmans are beaut though and have interiors and working table lamps
Would it not be easier to remove one of the handles from the reverser making it easier to turn by hand?
Yes im thinking the exact same thing!
this channel has become more of overground eric
In my defence, the majority of the underground is actually over ground 🤣
How much a used loco like this cost?
Your videos are good but can I give you a tip? Lower the brightness!
It looks ok my end strangely
@@UndergroundEric It's because it's set to HDR, must be messing with the display.
@@b9y ahhh tv set to HDR your end? Ive had one or two people mention similar over the past year or so but its such a little amount that ive not really thought about it. Hmm!
@@UndergroundEric It's the only options avaliable on YT so it's something in the upload. It's a big of a pickle! I'm a part time video editor and I can't fathom it 😂
@@b9y haha what the hell 🤣🤣
Ive had it before where youtube have messed up and one of my videos have gone super bright and almost sepia like, really wierd!!
Is the track layout yours
Friends house
How much did you buy it for
I dread to think how much it cost
Worth every penny!
@@UndergroundEric Oh I agree its lovely
but suspect hmm around 2500
is harefield a real station??
It was a halt originally, then Harefield Road was planned but got cancelled
Great loco but can I ask why you are wearing gloves, are you allergic to the coal or steam? Not getting at you but I've driven miniature steam locos for years and never needed gloves.
Too hot for me, my fingers cant tolerate the heat. Even through a glove it burns if i touch the valves for too long. every engine/person is different i suppose, they dont cause an issue anyway
where can you buy loco's like this ?
There are a few dealers about for second hand, or auctions. Failing that you have to build them from scratch usually
@@UndergroundEric thanks for reply :)
We need for steam for 2022 please or 2023

Hi there can anyone come for a ride on this railway
Its private im afraid, in a friends garden. We try to keep it a bit low key due to the nature of whats there.
Oh ok thanks
Train ride literally
Yup!
不需要太多的语言介绍,只要操作手势就可以了,里,讲话太多了

Cracking video, love the loco, looks & goes well. So where is this track & is it open to the Public..? Keep up the great work. I will have to go back through & watch the rest of the vids as this is the 1st one i've seen :D & now Subbed to your channel :)
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Its my friend Brents railway, which is private at his home.
Fingers crossed you enjoy the others! 🙂
