How to Use a Kineteco Spring Starter

  • Kira shows Ollie how to start an engine with a spring starter.
    Kineteco Spring Starters sell at list prices that range between £1,000 and £10,000 for bespoke specials (US$1,400 to $14,000). Ex Works UK. All starters are built to order from components source within Europe. Kineteco is increasingly manufacturing many of such components to improve lead times. The lead time for high volume models can be less than one week, specials are likely to have lead times of many months.
    One of the most popular applications is as a secondary starter on lifeboats.

    The unfortunate part about these innovations isn’t that they often existed decades ago and were fazed out. But the fact they never seem to catch on again strongly suggests an element of being pushed out, and not just fazed out.
    The KTM EXC dirtbikes are a great example of this. A bike specifically meant to be rd legal and capable of much farther journeys into the back country, and had a manual kick start redundancy to accompany the electric start for obvious reasons.
    With nearly zero push back or complaints about this in any way, and an undeniably large fan appreciation for the feature, they just removed the kick start and claimed it was for weight savings.
    Technology is great, but the seeming arrogance of its creators to assume it will always work and have no down sides often ruins the freedom technology is supposed to provide. And worse, often simply serves to make us far more dependant then we were before.

      There were actually some push mowers a while back (mid-2000s) that had spring starters in addition to the pull starter. The spring starter wasn't manually wound, but instead wound itself from the inertia of the flywheel when you stopped the engine. Then, to start the engine back up, all you had to do was prime it and push the start button. If it didn't start, then you could pull-start it like a normal mower.

    This is a great idea for small motors too. It could be much smaller even with a pull cord instead of the crank. I was thinking it would be very helpful when using a generator. If you are in the mountains without electricity, you can't use an electric starter. It would need to be easily retrofitted to fit on most small motors and a smaller, more pancake like profile.

      @Slick Armor My point was that the above idea has existed for a long time. • @garyh4458

  • @bonusnudges

    I’ve had a couple of engines with these type of starters on , if the engine needs more than one throw over the compression , it just won’t start it . You barely get one revolution of the engine with those starters . The engine has to be absolutely spot-on , otherwise there is no way it will start it . you will be there all day cranking that thing trying to get the engine to start . There is usually a reason things don’t catch on . It’s a good idea , but unless the engine is brand-new and starts first kick it’s useless

    • @tomclarke2950
      @tomclarke2950 3 роки тому +4

      Interesting comment. If the starter power is correctly matched to the engine, it should start the engine, whether old or new. Very old engines are easier to turn and should start with a spring starter, which will crank the engine three times faster than the standard electric starter and easily overcome the lost compression. In very cold climates, you either need to upgrade the power of the starter and/or use starting aids.
