I was at this concert. The Who, The Vagrants (Leslie West), The Rich Kids, and Tiny Tim between acts. I believe the theatre was half full. The Village Theatre later became The Fillmore Est
Yeah. My friends and I rallied at the Old Stanley (12th and A), dropped acid, and floated through TSP to the Village Theater. First time Who for me. Blown away. I skipped Woodstock because I had just seen them in concert and thought Tommy was "too much like the record".(not sayin', just sayin')
Funny that in ‘68 they played here again and the theater had already been renamed Fillmore East and Townshend recalled on stage that they called the place “a piss hole”....and that now under new management by Bill Graham it was way better.
I would have no way of getting who bought what at auction. You can see some vids of him and others talking about debt, also read some articles online. He lived life the way he wanted to and didn't stop to think of "someday". Greatest bass player of all time in my book.
@@jamesbuckingham.2935 Perhaps so for the band as a whole, and I don't doubt it, but my original statement stands. Townshend idolized the EBs as songwriters.
This is great. Wish we could hear the whole concert. This must be the one where people were fighting over the seats as the band tried to play, referenced in the April 6, 1968 Fillmore East Concert when PT called the Village Theatre a "pisshole."
Where's the youtube vid on Entwistle and his debts, where his gear and collections went. Sounds like Tate should make an Entwistle video for the Who fans.
I think this footage was from the tour they did with Herman's Hermits, and this was filmed by a member of the Hermits. The original footage was silent and the audio probably comes from a bootleg....
They're specifically covering the Everly Brothers version. The arrangement is taken from their 1964 version which you can hear here: ua-cam.com/video/iyyDMEJqLJIT/v-deo.htmlhey also covered the Everly's song Man With Money around this time.
Because it's a Vox whose end will come soon enough, and good riddance. Lousy guitars, they were. EDIT: Never mind, it's a Gibson, but he did destroy a Vox on the Smothers Brothers. Must have felt good.
I'm sure that Pete wore more than one blue shirt in his life, but the particular clip you are referring to in this video is definitely pre October, 1968; could even be earlier, as he was using that late '50s Stratocaster on here in the earlier part of the '68 tour; plus, the Meher Baba picture pin he is wearing. This particular footage could be from one of the shows in either Michigan, Ohio, or Illinois.
Frankenstein was a Precision Bass put together with a maple neck and pickups from a slab bass and from about 4 or 5 other basses. This here is the axe bass, designed for him by Peter Cook
sorry forget my reply below, as the footage is incorrect, modo03 pointed out that this is from the Dallas Memorial Auditorium on 23rd July 1967, I think he's playing a Fender Jazz, judging from the timeframe of these pics www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/bass/bass6768.html
In 67 still an Opening Act, Playing cover song's? They Ended Herman Hermits Career! Open for them about 25 shows through out 🇺🇸 "It's a Kind of Hush" all Over the 🌎! 🎶 NOT with The Who 🇬🇧 Opening for you! 😆
The Who was never afraid to cover a tune and SCHOOL IT
Look at Pete still playing his destroyed 335!
he hadn't had an opportunity to "borrow" a new one yet...
Pete wore different clothes and played different guitars, all in the same gig, WOW!!! That's really magic!
Sadly is a recompilation of different shows including Village Theatre, one of the shows including this video is Fillmore East 5 and 6 of April
The audio recording is actually from Dallas Memorial Auditorium, July 23, 1967!
Never heard this version before! Brilliant!!

Me tooo.....anyone remember what the road crew did at the end of the last song? (My Generation..I think)
Very cool vintage footage! Thanks for posting!
I feel like this is one of the closest recording to what a gig might have sounded like standing just outside the door to the amphitheater
WOW this is amazing!!! hard enough to find footage of them from the 60s, especially anything in color, and then this cover.. wow

A rock version of Love Hurts eight years before Nazareth. The Who was ahead of their time.
It was originally an Everly Brothers tune from 1960. Townshend loved the EBs.
Never heard this from The Who. Great version.
@@doorswhofan True. They did Man With Money, another later EB tune, the year before this concert.
@@doorswhofan Reason they did this was they were big Roy Orbison fans and loved his version.

I was there!!!!!!!!!!
Many many people have covered this song but I never knew the Who did too.
This is gorgeous
that is the bass Entwistle used during Eyesight To The Blind in the Tommy movie. it was a custom.
The one in the movie had a Gibson neck.
The bass pictured here has a Fender neck.
..the gig before this one on the 22nd they played Southfield High School outside Detroit with Ted and the Dukes opening...
OMFG!
This is great. Wish we could hear the whole concert. This must be the one where people were fighting over the seats as the band tried to play, referenced in the April 6, 1968 Fillmore East Concert when PT called the Village Theatre a "pisshole."
thank you so much for sharing this!!!
thank you, more please.....
Great clip! Some of this looks like it was filmed in summer tour 1968. Thanks for posting
Great!
Hey this man is right!
What an enormous version. Massive and heartbreaking. Golly gosh that must have been overwhelming to witness. Is there a studio recording.?
No
HELL YEAH!!
I wonder if that bass is in a case in Entwistle's house right now. Looks like one of his extra rare ones. RIP Ox.
I have not! Wow!
i love Entwistle, that crazy bass wonder how it bass sounds like
Petes Guitar Takes a Licking But Keeps on Ticking
They played again during their 1989 tour.
that jacket on Townshend is awesome, Elton John must have seen the Who,
He did Tommy with them
@@bonkeydollocks1879 Not in 67. The film version came out in the mid70s.
@@IMeMineWho never said it was in 67, I just mentioned he did Tommy with them, never mentioned what year, he obviously did it when it came out
I have a vague memory of them playing the Everleys' Temptation.
Where's the youtube vid on Entwistle and his debts, where his gear and collections went.

Hot! Smoking..and the birth of glampunk!

It also appears that the whole back is missing!
Very proto punk
@0.22 i have that poster.
Thank you for posting this. The Who covering Roy Orbison. The audio is great. Any of the footage from the actual performance?
They're specifically covering the Everly Brothers version. The arrangement is taken from their 1964 version which you can hear here: ua-cam.com/video/iyyDMEJqLJIT/v-deo.htmlhey also covered the Everly's song Man With Money around this time.
Wait, what kind of collage is this? Pete is in a blue t shirt and a sparkly jacket at times....call me confused....
Switching gear in a flash!
Pictures of lily kit
Wgere did you get this footage from?
Most of his stuff was sold off, he owed millions in debt.
Pete, is there something wrong with your guitar???
That ES-355 has some structural issues!
Because it's a Vox whose end will come soon enough, and good riddance. Lousy guitars, they were.

I heart this comment :)
@@divingduck1970 That was not a Vox; it was a Gibson. My friend was at that show at The Village Theater, and confirmed it.
@@67Stu Right, I corrected myself. It was a Vox on the Smothers Brothers show, though.

is that Entwhistle's famous "Frankenbass"?

"Love Hurts" Always though Nazareth wrote that song!
Wow, was that crappy. And I'm a Who fan
Sorry to John but that is one of the ugliest Basses 😂😂😂😂
Horrible
Yes, horrible it wasn’t a longer clip!
