Lexus tech here, in order for the power back door to open itself from the outside button, you need to have the dealer turn the customizable setting on with a toyota/ lexus scan tool, otherwise it only does it from the key fob or inside button. Not sure why they chose to have it “off” by defualt, but the 2016+ models have it enabled by defualt.
Have you got the problem fixed? I have the exactly problem. Tailgate could be opened with driver seat button and key fob, even could be closed by the tailgate button. But could not open with tailgate button automatically.
I have the same problem! I can opened with key, with the botton inside and the botton on trunk. Just not with the tailgate handle! Did you find the problem? I have a 2009 RX450h

That is not a problem. That is just how it is designed. It will only open automatically with the key. I have a 2013 Toyota Venza, and the same behavior. All 2010-2015 rx350 are the same. If u press the button it will only unlock the latch but not lift it up all the way. If u want u can test drive other rx350s, they all do the same thing. Normal.
Did you figure out what the issue was? I have a ‘11 that has the same issue. Power trunk will open with the remote and driver side switch, but won’t open automatically from the rear.
I replaced the struts in mine in the assumption that the motor couldn’t lift up tailgate since the struts seemed to be weaker, but it still didn’t work. Have you checked the fuse in your car? I’ve read that it might be that but I haven’t tried. I also hope it’s not the motor that needs to be replaced
I found the solution.... You must have connected to the Techstream, go Customize, select PSD & PBD operation, and "enable" the PBD Assist Open Operation.
I fixed mine with Carista (ODB tool with a companion app). I don’t recall the name of the setting, but it wasn’t hard to find in the app. Note that it requires a subscription, but if you sign up for the annual and get 30 days free, which you can then cancel before the trial ends.

No. But a Lexus service tech commented that the dealership could fix it by computer.

Check inside your glove box, you should have a switch to control it!!
That would negate key fob opening too. Not that but good idea. Thanks

What I understand is they only open automatically with key fob or inside button. They are not designed to open automatically with the hatch handle.
