It's so nice how they fixed up the stations. I rode this line in the 60's and 70's and the stations were so filthy and dark and dingy.

I'm a Philly native. 35 yrs old. Took the BSL all my life. The stations look mostly the same. But you can tell some of the stations got a new paint job. Either way, I've always loved how every station looks different

Im listening to the operator as closely as i can, if not mistaken he said the old Subway cars were restricted to 30mph? As someone who rode the old Subway Cars back in the 70's and up till they were retired, those cars were capable of doing 65 to 70 mph easy!!!

I lived one block north of Fern Rock terminal for twenty years. How well I know that station and growing up riding the Broad Street Line...the ancient 1930’s cars!

You’re not kidding Michael. I went to Temple u in the 60s and South Philly to visit family. Dark and dingy is an understatement. Look a lot better today

You'd think after years of neglect they would repair the track in the restricted zone. that speed restriction has been there since I was in high school 20 years ago.

One of the original 1928 Broad Street Cars is now the dining room for a CT pizzeria. Haven't been there yet but I hope to visit Trackside Pizza in Wallingford, CT.

I got on the subway the septa workers had the booth open D.-Jing rap music. People were hopping over the turn style. Teenagers hollering out drugs at Broad and Olney, people on the train smoking and doing drugs on every train. There is absolutely no law on the subway. I take the regional rail. Fern Rock to Center City.

@@jarisstarling6696I'm a Philly native and I grew up taking The Broad Street Line. I love the BSL. I mean...just look at how every stop has a different color layout and design. That might not be a big deal to many. But it makes the BSL unique. compared to any other subway line. The things you've mentioned happening on that train does occur. But it's still a far better option than taking The Frankford Line. Trust me

I wanna operate these trains so so bad. Got almost six years with Septa and I've been putting my transfer in for the longest now. But now I think it's going to take about 10 years to get over there and I'm not sure if I can wait that long. Hopefully I'm wrong and by the grace of God I get there sooner but not liking my chances right now

Every time I come across a latest video about The Broad Street Subway, I reminisce about my occassional visits (1989-2005), and always have expectations of the line while reading about many various plans that was shelved over the years for the usual reasons that transit is deeply underappreciated, especially nationwide, and that saddens myself; although I've made comments on earlier videos, I'm still impressed with the signaling co•ordinations that NYC originally had until upgrading: 🔴/🟡/🟢 +🔴; today every aspect is doubled up: 🔴+🔴- the most common, 🟡+🟡- especially yard movements, 🟢+🟢- clear track speed, 🟡+🟢/🟢+🟡; in other new systems there's 🔴,🟡, and ⚪ in place of 🟢-sometimes in flash mode too.

  • @wmbrown6

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but weren't those sections of this subway where the columns consisted of four 'L's' riveted to a web plate were of earlier build than those with straight columns?

Hello sir i have a question for you. Hello, i have 2 questions
How would the BSL use the Erie Ave Fly junction from the express track ?
      Excluding between Fairmount & Girard
How would that propesed line link
Adams avenue to the vicinity of blue grass road via The Roosevelt Boulevard express way? im having trouble visualizing the route beyond that northbound ramp at Erie station

    • @larrymcneil8038
      @larrymcneil8038 3 роки тому +2

carey hightower Those are good questions to access the Erie ramp you have to go up four track Which goes all the way back to Broad and hunting Park then it was supposed to turn right and go up the boulevard that way

I am searching for an audio of the old BSL cars (from the 50's and early 60's). As they started up, especially from City Hall heading south, there would be a sort of a really low hum/vibration and the tone would rise...

@algomaone121 Hey. I have in mind the combination of that humming sound you imitated, the screech of the wheels and the whistle as the train pulled out of City Hall for Walnut-Locust.. And, it's kind of neat to see that 2 years after I wrote that, you saw it and replied! Wishing you all the best

@@MMendelG nice to meet you! I love the Broad Street Subway! Such wonderful memories, and some scary ones too, but less of those.
I think the thrumming was created by the spinning magnet in the car’s electric generator, which probably gave it start up juice and emergency power. I believe I asked a conductor about that once. The Japanese cars of the 1980’s didn’t have anything like it, as you’d know.
Do you remember how the conductor/engineers used to carry their magnetic (actually looked a lot like this 👉🧲) transmitter loop around, fixing it just outside their cab window? That, I learned, sent switch signals when necessary at the train’s approach to a light or switch. I’m glad you saw my reply and I’m interested in any more facts or memories you’d share.

Weird that they make express trains loop clockwise while locals loop counter clockwise. With the side effect that express trains have to cross their own path entering and exiting the loop.
I wonder why they build it thst way instead of making both go clockwise.
