I think for Carrie, the best to listen to is her lives. The studio versions don't do just for her voice, ever. Would love to see y'all do Choctaw County Affair (Live from CMA Music Festival 2016). It's not one of her top radio hits but it is great live. And one of the few times you'll see Carrie playing an instrument.

She’s a unsophisticated young woman dancing who catches the eye of a POS looking for a young one without the experience to see red flags all over a guy of his type love-bombing her with all sorts of gifts to bring her away from her world and whatever supports she may have had into his world and control where he feels safe enough to drop the act and act as though she’s his property and punching bag. One of my favorite drinks is apple cider with bourbon. It is fantastic. Add a slight amount of maple syrup with it and add a little ice to it.

I had a cousin by marriage who told me that she married for love the first time (to my cousin) and that it didn't go well. So after they got divorced she said she married for money and that she was much happier. It always struck me as funny. The cousin she was married to was a traveling evangelical minister for the pentecostal church, so they were broke broke!

A really fun song that tells a story is The Legend of the Wooley Swamp by Charlie Daniels. But, really, anything by Charlie is an amazing story and an amazing time. Hardly anyone reacts to this one, though. Understandably, the one people react to is usually The Devil Went Down to Georgia.
Love Carrie Underwood, no matter what she sings her voice is ridiculous. " He hit a woman for the very last time" is regular Carrie, men vs woman ugh is her thing. I'm not saying the message isn't important. Drinking Alone is a good and different story line. Also her duet Miranda Lambert "Something Bad" is really good. Not many female singers will stand up with Carrie and say here's my girl, listen.

But, despite that, she does an amazing job. She co-wrote the song, and it is her true life story.

Right!?! When I found myself single in my 30’s everyone kept telling me to find a sugar daddy. While I was finishing my business degree in finance. I was like why are you trying to project I can’t take care of myself and find a guy that gets me and we fit. Some guy who values the same things as me?
I ultimately manifested exactly that for myself but I was offended at the sugar daddy suggestions lol. I told them all Free is an “F” word and there will absolutely be strings attached to someone else’s money.

That mic trick Keith was talking about, does that have the same effect as a singer moving a handheld mic away from their face?... I've noticed, over the years, a lot of singers will do that when they go for the belting notes and vocal gymnastics... someone like our own Whispering Jack - John Farnham is one that did it all the time, especially in a live gig... speaking of Farnsey, have you boys ever heard any of his stuff? if not, I'd suggest his live version of "Help" with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, or any of the other numbers from that series of concerts, absolutely blows the roof off... not that I'm in any way biased...as the one and only Ian Molly Meldrum would say, "Do y'self a favour"... I think you guys are slightly off the mark about the woman in the song. I don't think she was a gold digger, I think she was a girl who grew up super poor, but had looks, so he noticed her. He probably love bombed her (I was a psych major, sorry 😂) and showered her with expensive gifts and trips and put stars in her eyes, and then after they were married, he let the facade fall away and showed what he really was: an abusive coward. That's always been my take on the song, but maybe it just slants that way for me because I'm a domestic abuse survivor myself.

I always got the impression this song was “placed” earlier in history when love wasn’t as much a factor as practical benefits. The guy was preying among the poor women to find the most beautiful one that he thought he could control. The poor woman was happy to get the attention of someone who could raise her up from her financial situation. Before the current century or so, that was a common situation. I wouldn’t call her a great person, but I wouldn’t call her a gold digger, either. That’s a very modern concept that I don’t believe fit the storytelling for this one. Id put it in the 1950s/1960s, especially using “lawmaker” in the lyrics. You don’t hear that much anymore.

I can't stand a woman who uses a man for his money or to raise her social status. That's a bleep that needs knocked down a peg. But if he hits her, even once, even when she's golden diggin' he deserves the four letter words beat out of him. Country and rock have intermingled because unless you listen to classic rock stations, all you get on the "rock" stations now is Rap. Loved the song, first time I've heard it myself.
As for the bourbon. I saw that beautiful coloring and almost drooled. What was the name of this again? I love granny Smith apples. There is nothing better, to me, on a hot late summer afternoon then ice cold granny Smith and having some bourbon that tastes like bourbon with hints of Carmel and apples, would please me greatly! To me ( my beliefs only), a lot of these new Country Western songs all have the same tempo and sound alike to me. I wish I had better words for what I mean. It is like they all have the same poetry tempo. dah da dah da dah da daa. Hell, I wish I was more educated. Johnny Cash's A Boy Named Sue and Folsom Prison Blues don't sound anything alike.
Carrie singing about violence - like this one or "Before He Cheats" - just seems wrong. As for effects on her voice; just not needed. I was channel surfing years ago and came upon her singing on a TV competition show. I listened for literally seconds and I called to my son to come hear this girl. I said, "I don't know if she's going to win, but she will have a career".

He paid for a trophy wife. She got out of poverty. Also, country will have 2-3 choruses with the same words, but will have different meanings. A lot of "country" ends up there because it doesn't fit in other genres.
