Apple stated that all you can really do with the phone is accidentally drop it in a meter of water, but clearly it can withstand quite a bit more.

The Speakers & Mic need to allow sound & air through so a mesh with small holes is placed. The mesh is water resistant but will let water through under pressure. Steam will easily make it through.
I use my iPhone 5s in the shower. Not under water but the steam is definitely present. The phone still works after 3 years and I do this everyday. So... I doubt the steam will affect the phone.

And for those who think the S7 was tampered with, I checked other sources and dead at 35 feet is about right. It relies on a a hydrophobic mesh to seal the speakers which will seal the phone all day in shallow water but doesn't protect against high pressures.
***** I just watched an iPhone 7 teardown video and they don't use hydrophobic mesh anywhere on the device. The construction of the iPhone actually seems to be a bit better water-proofed than Samsungs in the sense that you could reassemble the iPhone without loosing the waterproofing where with Samsung once you open it the seals are pretty much broken.

"Water" bleeding from the screen happends regardless as it is the backlight adhesive that peels off and allows light to pass through so whether the screen was turned off or on it would still happen. 2nd none of these phones have a water detector meaning that it can not know if water is inside and can not "purposely shut off" in order to protect itself. Because the wireless charging that Samsung offers doesn't actually qualify as "Wireless charging", it still has a wire it just has a pad sticking to it so that you don't have to plug it in. So no, why put wireless charging when it isn't? Unnecessary feature. Apple is working on putting true wireless charging where you can charge from a distance, but they weren't able to stabilize it before the iPhone 7 release. So maybe the iPhone 8 or the one after.
