    Cork mat helps to remove static, especially if you live in a tropical humid climate. It also reduce crackling sound in the background

    I think the rubber ones works great! They are quite heavy, which is good, and they also absorb vibrations really well.

  • @BarakaPDub
    @BarakaPDub 8 років тому +24

    I've used several types of mats and cork is one of the better materials for damping external vibrations from hitting your record needle. I see several commenters stating that rubber is good which is true to some degree, cork has better anti-vibrational properties though. While it is true that it can shed, if you take care of it, you shouldn't have a problem with it shedding. Now that I have upgraded my platter to a Delrin material, I have forgone the mat completely.

    I’ve been watching your videos and studying. I recently purchased the Audio-technica LP-120 after taking your advice and it’s amazing. After purchasing a bunch of new 180g vinyl, Metallica Floyd Pantera and assimilating my fathers 70’s collection of Bread Moody Blues Neil Diamond Guess Who etc. I have over 100 albums already within a few weeks. Earlier today I ordered the 1/4” thick cork mat you recommended and hope to purchase the Ortofon Red by the end of the week. All going into a Sony surround sound receiver into Polk Audio towers through heavy gauge Monsters cable speaker wire. Sounds amazing.
    Anyways long way of saying thanks for all the great info. You’re videos have been a great resource as well as entertaining. Cheers from Massachusetts.

    I have a Music Hall turntable with a Shure M97xE cartridge and I just recently switched out the felt mat for a cork mat. I think it is a big improvement. I seem to have less turntable dust, less dust on my records because I do not have to clean my stylus as much. And my records seem to sound better. My turntable is connected to a Yamaha 7.2 A/V receiver and speaker system is a Klipsch 7.1 system.

  • @VinylRescue
    @VinylRescue 8 років тому +1

    Having the same turntable I have and the same issue of the tone arm not being level even it made it challenge. The height adjustment wasn't made correctly - can't adjust it down enough to get the tone arm level without adding pads on the platter. Then the spindle gets shortened in the process. I use a cork mat from Ringmat on the bottom, felt anti-static in the middle, and a Herbie foam pad on top. It not only helped get my tone arm level, but it helped dampen the background and floor noise making my recordings sound great!

  • @0grinnie0

    I'm still new to vinyl and I honestly thought a slip mat was a decoration for the longest time. Had one custom made and I would take it off before using a vinyl. Mine is felt ad it sounds nice, though it's a little well used since I would take it on and off of my player alot.
    Going to use it how it's supposed to be used now!
    I use a Victrola Suitcase, got new speakers for it so the sound quality is better than the built-in speakers. I don't think Cork would work well on these, the felt works just fine.

  • @harmlessrebel868
    @harmlessrebel868 8 років тому

    I love my cork mat. I've used it for about a year and find that I like it over the rubber and felt mats that I've used in the past. There is one major danger with a cork mat. I accidentally bumped my arm a while back while listening to a 45 and the needle grabbed onto the cork and destroyed by $200 cartridge. The felt and rubber mats do't grab the needle like this and are less likely to do catastrophic damage. That, however, has not stopped me from using the cork mat!

    • @djt6012
      @djt6012 8 років тому +2

      I've had a rubber mat do the same to a stylus of mine years ago, so it's not unique to cork. Interesting video though, I'm keen to check out a cork mat.

    I have a Pro-Ject debut esprit with an acrylic platter. It has always sounded great, but I decided to try out one of those leather and cork combo mats (moo mat). I didn't like what it did to the sound at all. Honestly I didn't expect as much difference either way as it made. For lack of a better way to describe it, it almost sounded muffled. I returned it after trying several different records.

    Jared, I got the same 1/4 cork mat as well but i noticed that now I have an absurd amount of static build up on records after playing them. It did not happen with the OEM AT120 mat and nothing else has changed in my setup and also using the 2M red as you recommended. Have you seen an increase in static too?

    I recently picked up a cork mat and the tiny pieces of debris are killing me. it makes a brand new (cleaned) record sound like a record from the 1930s. I tried rinsing it with water, but I'm thinking this will be a short-lived project.

    Only two problems I've found with the cork one is if you're using the brush once the record is on the mat, as quite often the mat tends to skid under the record, which surely can't be doing it any good. Also, the mat looks a little weird under coloured or clear vinyl. Other than that, it's fine.

    I have been using just two slipmats stacked on my platter, raises the record itself to the proper tracking level (the height adjust is probably the worst thing so far about the LP120 imo), but i'm heavily considering getting a handmade leather mat from my record store to avoid having to "peel" off the upper slipmat from a static-y record.

  • @loringmccrorey9897
    @loringmccrorey9897 4 роки тому

    Seeing that the Lp-120 has no damping material inside the platter, the cork is a sensible alternative to material, with it's vibration absorption. 🙂👍

    One of my older platters is actually velvet coated steel, these were common on some older turntables, another has a rubber mat it came with. I plan on using a circa 1930-50 turntable top too a custom table to play 16inch transcription disks and hopefully quadraphonic records, has a steel platter but the velvet fell away.

    Hi Jarrett ,saw your video on cork mats ,I must agree I to have an audio technica ATLP-120 usb turntable and a pro_ject debut 3 they both came with felt matt did not like them ,for one thing when cleaning records even the slightest pressure would stop record.and growing up with records the rubber mat was the norm ,with both turntables they came w/felt mats was not happy tried the cork on both turntables inprove in sound for both units and since I have accrylic platter onmy pro-ject the record slips and I dont like the bare record sitting on platter I believe record will get scratched ,when u rubb two things together u will see scuff! I would have liked if you had explained why the mat even matters. And static is an issue with all three: Leather, felt and cork. I use the an acrylic platter but with a clamp to attach the record to the platter. No slip, no static, no movement between platter and record. I think it's the best way to go if you cannot afford an Airforce turntable that sucks the record to the platter with air pressure.

    I'd appreciate some knowledge here.
    I currently have a Numark TT-USB with its stock HS1 Cartridge/Needle. Christmas is coming up and because I love myself I am going to treat me with a nice gift. My options (due to budget limitations) are the following:
    First and foremost, I am getting a Turntable Lab cork and rubber mat, that one goes.
    My choices are below:
    I was interested in getting a second turntable, because I want to have options, and experiment with different brands and models. Thus, I semi-decided to get the Audio Technica ATHATPL60. Here's were the choice is:
    -Audio Technica ATHATPL60 (non USB) and a record of my choice (Dream Theater's Metropolis Pt. 2)
    -Audio Technica ATHATPL60-USB
    -Do not buy a new turntable, instead replace the stock cartridge and needle of my Numark with a AT95E/HSB Headshell/Cartridge Combo, which I've read is top shelf in terms of quality.
    So what should I do? A new turntable and record, a new turntable with USB capabilities, or simply upgrade my existing cartridge and needle? What say the experts?

    my turntable came with a cork mat and it would leave cork residue all over my records. Also i felt like it was worse than my felt mat when it came to static. Every time i would flip it i would have the cork mat stuck to b side along with a bunch of dirt. After some recomendations from my friends on reddit. I went with the leather mat and never had a problem with static again! So i definetly prefer the leather over the cork. But my cork was thin. maybe if i had a really thick one than it wouldnt be crazy with the static.

  • @aerorider04
    @aerorider04 8 років тому

    I prefer rubber. The leather and cork tend to attract dirt, which finds it's way to the record surface. Felt mats are basically dust rags...pitch them, and replace with one of the other types of your choice.

    Does cork put any leavins or leave behind "crumbs" or anything on the record?

    My Pro-Ject turntable has a platter made from recycled vinyl records and you are not supposed to use any kind of turntable mat with it; however, I have ordered a carbon fiber turntable mat from Sleeve City and I am going to try it out and see how I like it. I will report back in. Cheers! //Paul

    i used to use that mat..but my mat is only 2mm thick.. it does make sounds better, but after playing whole side of my LP, its give more static to the surface which make dust stick to my LP..so i don't use that anymore and now i use another mat that prevent static to my LP

  • @IJuanDs

    What are mats for? Wouldn't that scratch the vinyl? Because the vinyl would be high and there would be pressure from the needle down towards the grooves?

    • @vinyleyezz
      @vinyleyezz  8 років тому +1

      +Juan Soto L nah, mats act like cushions between the platter and the record. They shouldn't scratch the record.

    I kinda got super mad about what I got for Christmas for a record player as it was a Chinese cheap one and then I ordered my own then to discover that the plastic ones like the victrola suit case ones sounded like cheap garbage and rubbish , I then sent it back to amazon and got a auto technica one and omg I am in heaven I now realized I was doing records all wrong to play them . This new system I got is a helping beginners one that I can modify myself later on and I got this cork bored for it and wow just wow I feel so alive and cry when I hear the actual music of what a record is supposed to sound like

    Hi Jarrett, it's me again, if you had to choose between a 180 gram limited edition numbered vinyl, and a 140 gram colored vinyl, taking into consideration that the first one is like three times the price? Which one would you buy?

      @vinyleyezz  8 років тому +8

      +aadam1410 good idea!

    • @pim1943
      @pim1943 5 років тому

      More weight = more material. If the extra material is used correctly during pressing, the same record can have better dynamic range or overall have an improved sound on a thick record over the same album on a thin record. But if it's not put to use during pressing, the material just goes to waste. So; heavier records can sound better, but it depends on the pressing. I found 60s psychedelic stuff, like an original 1968 French pressing of Creedence Clearwater Revival's debut album to sound amazing (it's 230 grams).

    • @cliff4ever
      @cliff4ever 5 років тому +2

      Pim Nelissen I think he’s referencing the heavy weights placed centrally on top of records while they are played. A video explaining the plus and minus of those would be great.

    2nd dumb question as the AT LP 120 is my first turntable in 25+ years. Since I'm in an apartment I have the unit hooked into the Aux port of my Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin. Sounds better than lossless digital and CD compared to vinyl counterpart. I see your needle. If I buy the same (2M Red PnP) that should just plug in where the stock one is? Any other adjustments? Don't want to spend that coin and ruin it

    I have a Technics SL-D33 turntable with a technics cassette player, amp, preamp, remote receiver, and 2 speakers that my neighbors were throwing out. The turntable has a decently thick rubber mat on it, but since I'm waiting for my new stylus to come in the mail I can't comment on the sound. This is my first turntable and record setup so I don't have a point of reference. Are thick rubber mats good? Everything else on the whole HiFi setup works except the remote receiver.

      What record player did you have?

    • @LarsUelf
      @LarsUelf 8 років тому +2

      President Longrod Von hugendong It's a Thomson TT401CD ... an all in one system that would be great if it was made with better parts and actually sounded good. The CD-Player stops noticebaly after every song and has an annoying klick to it. The speakers are built in and sound extremely harsh and I don't want to know how much the needle already screwed my records. It has a lot of options though ...

    • @hvislysettaross69420
      @hvislysettaross69420 8 років тому +1

      +Lars Uelf I have to say that the all in one systems aren't very good with sound etc. but you can find good affordable ones basically anywhere! I bought my turntable on eBay for 60. It's a technics slbd20. She isn't high end and is made mostly of plastic, but it sound good to me! It does have a big vertical scratch on the dust cover, it I don't really care too much. So I would try eBay for a used one but remember who you are dealing with. Or buy a new one for around 100 on Amazon
