She is one of the few actors to ever be fired from a series.....TWICE. Good old Ann, fiery redhead that she was, she landed a good solid one there. My take is that this was about more than simply wholloping a mouthy teenager. After all, you'd think that if she should clobber anyone, it's the creep who's attempting to do the naughty with her daughter. But Julie really touched a raw nerve with that "you're lonely" bit... something that Ann didn't want to hear about herself To be fair, Ann walked right into it by suggesting the good doctor try herself on for size, letting her guard down just long enough for Julie to get one good verbal punch in. I sense some jealousy and insecurity on her part besides the motherly instinct to protect her kids from , shall we say, undesirable elements. You can feel the rage in Bonnie's performance when she hits Mackenzie; perhaps it's not just Julie's remark being like a personal insult at Ann in-story, but also Bonnie the actress taking out some real-life frustration on her troublesome young co-star. Either way, a powerful scene.
...Mackenzie did an Interview in 1993, when she guested on a "Beverly Hills 90210" Episode as a Dr-ug Counselor (!!), and mentioned that the slap was R-EA-L, and, said Bonnie was into method acting, and was "...not liking her, very much...", then....
The look on her (Ann's) face at 0:24- its the same look my mom gave my sister when she got "ugly" (like Julie did here; never forget that look for as long as l live). Ann was firm, tough, and was effective at defending her family- Bonnie Franklin did a SUPER-ultra awesome job at playing her; could see her later on playing a defense lawyer (maybe even a judge or public figure) in an episode of Law & Order. Still miss her very much!!!
Early to mid 70's TV was high quality and realistic, in the late 70s the social issues that they would try to address started to become ridiculous with shows like "Different Strokes".
@@neptoon928 Diffrent Strokes touched on pedophilia, drug use, racism, being disabled, eating disorders, homelessness,so much for ridiculous social issues.🙄
No, not Ann's boyfriend. He's Julie's boss. Julie was working for him and one day she came home and told Ann she was in love with him, and that Paul was in love with her too but he just didn't know it yet. Ann said "it's just a crush", but Julie said no, she really loved him. Then her boss asked Julie to go on a business trip and Ann said "No way." Julie felt like the business trip was her boss asking her for a date, but to her boss it was just a business trip. Ann reluctantly agreed to let Julie go, but she did question Julie's boss. Julie's boss assured her it was just business and that it would be educational for Julie and that she would be safe and to trust him. Ann told the boss that Julie was in love with him and he was surprised . . . "He said, "Really? She's in love with me?" He seemed flattered. The boss truly didn't have bad intentions, but he wasn't admitting to himself that he was actually in love with Julie too and he realized it the more time he spent with her. He eventually proposed marriage to her. They really were in love. But she was 17 and he was 42. Julie accepted his proposal. But as the episode went on, you see little signs that the age gap is a problem. Julie didn't feel comfortable around Paul's friends and felt out of place. Julie realizes that it wouldn't be a good idea to continue their relationship so she broke off with him. It was a sad episode, because they really did love each other. Understandably, Ann is treating Paul here like a pervert, dirty old man. But he wasn't. He really was a nice man who was in love with Julie.
@@HovaNirvana Well it was a really good episode. A two parter. In fact, when Julie and her boss were out to dinner he finally admitted to her and to himself that he looked forward to going to work because he looked forward to seeing Julie and he admitted he was starting to have feelings for her. Of course, she felt the same way. When they got back to the apartment, Julie said, "Paul, aren't you going to kiss me goodnight?" and he was hesitant and said, "I don't think I'm really ready for that yet." and Julie was the one who initiated the kiss, and that's when Ann walked in.
T James Yah, I was shocked. The guy, Todd Grinnell, doesn't even look anything like Schneider. If there had been a man in their home, it NEVER would of escalated to this point. No father would of allowed his 17 year old daughter to go on a trip out of town(even for 1 day) with a 42 year old man. Anne never should of allowed it.
Don't speak for all fathers. Not all fathers would've stopped it. I know from experience. And whether you want to admit it or not, there are fathers in this world that DO traffic their own daughters. Just because you're a sperm donor doesn't make you automatically a good dad.

I also think Julie could be excused for being insulted by Ann's "get your kicks with a woman" jibe. Yes, Dr. Paul is technically commingling with a minor, but it's less about age or the law than respect. The implication is that Ann's a woman, and Julie is pointedly *not* a woman, which is a condescending snd hurtful thing to say to your own child, even if she is technically still under-age (and even without the sexual underpinnings, as in "I deserve your handsome and wealthy body more than this mere kid does".) It's worth noting that Ann *doesn't deny* what Julie's insinuating.

jcp1977 It was a 2 part episode where Edith was almost raped by a guy who dressed like a detective on her 50th birthday, that was part 1. Then at the end of part 2 Edith wouldn't report the the man and Gloria yelled at Edith to point her finger at him but she refused. So when Gloria said "You'er not my mother anymore!" Edith jumped up and slapped Gloria.
+sinbad799 One AITF episode I can't watch.
Gloria slapped Meathead silly more than once.
She was always so disrespectful to her mother. She so deserved that.
Wait, is this the same guy she almost marries, and Barbara wanted to know how much money he made?
YOU lonely, Ma?! YOU want him?! SLAP!!!!
If I were Phillips, I’d have slapped back without Franklin knowing beforehand.
I remember on The Jeffersons Lionel said something disrespectful about George and Louise slapped him silly.
He made a remark about George getting to the top practically without any brains. Lionel was goofing off in college even though it was close to finals.
did the facts of life had slapping
Rudy Iraheta In a first season episode, Blair’s mother slaps her for essentially accusing her of being a tramp.

what episode is this
Julie deserved it. She was dumb enough to insult her mother and got the crap slapped out if her. Way to go, Ann.
She slapped her into the next episode
OMG - Your comment is awesome.
@@jholttn In the next episode, Ann apologized to Julie.
Great Scene!

Did Norman Lear's mother hit him as a child? Florida also did this to Michael on GOOD TIMES when she went through menopause.
LOL
Attmay Wasn't there an episode of AITF where Edith slapped Gloria?
Edith also slapped Archie too when she found out he was gambling again.
Parents in 2021 would say this is abuse...us parents back in the day say its justified...which generation got more respect....today you be a terrible parent..back then your kid was taught boundaries and respect....its funny the other day me and mom saw a kid doing wrong ...his mom trying a time out....my mom looked at me she said thats the problem with parents today..i didnt do time out...id give you to a count of 3 and girl i dont do fractions....love you mom!!
This was amazingly taboo in 1975
...Mackenzie did an Interview in 1993, when she guested on a "Beverly Hills 90210" Episode as a Dr-ug Counselor (!!), and mentioned that the slap was R-EA-L, and, said Bonnie was into method acting, and was "...not liking her, very much...", then....
Still miss her very much!!!
always some sort of drama with julie and barbara. ann had to have been worn out. this is good birth control.
If she was mine she woulda been gone after the first "shut up!". There woulda been no coming back from that one.
I'm feeling a three way
Ellery queen!
Early to mid 70's TV was high quality and realistic, in the late 70s the social issues that they would try to address started to become ridiculous with shows like "Different Strokes".
Nick Foles Super Bowl 52 MVP different strokes wasn’t that bad though
@@neptoon928 Diffrent Strokes touched on pedophilia, drug use, racism, being disabled, eating disorders, homelessness,so much for ridiculous social issues.🙄
Ann did a Will Smith on her behind!
Was Mackenzie actually only 17 when this was filmed?!

I never saw this episode, so someone help me out - how did we get here? Was the doctor Ann’s boyfriend or something?
@@LuvTadnDixie I appreciate you taking the time to thoroughly address my inquiry. Thank you.
@@LuvTadnDixieThis was a 4 partner actually.
How are they gonna explain Franklin and Harrington's real-life deaths in the upcoming reboot of this show?
The Schneider character was recast and the family in the apartment is Latino.
Seriously? Bad move RE: recast.
T James Yah, I was shocked. The guy, Todd Grinnell, doesn't even look anything like Schneider. The 13-episode series on Netflix for 2017 will involve a military mom, recently divorced with two kids (a Julie-like daughter and a Barbara-like boy - kind of a Barbara/Alex fusion). The only bright spot, to me, is RITA MORENO playing the grandmother - similar to Nanette Fabray. She would be worth seeing.
Is TG going to be Schneider's nephew that was shown in the final episode? Ironically, the final episode was NOT of Ann and the family leaving.
i love julie

If your from the 80s, everyone knows if you talked to your parents like this they would beat the crap out of you!

@@Boxrec297 I was talking about the character, not the actress. Some people have trouble separating the two. Why do you want to slap Mackenzie?🙄
@@gretchennelson7056 I wouldn't really slap her, I just don't like the character. Nothing personal against Mackenzie.

Dumb angry parents raise dumb angry children.
I also think Julie could be excused for being insulted by Ann's "get your kicks with a woman" jibe. Yes, Dr. Paul is technically commingling with a minor, but it's less about age or the law than respect. The implication is that Ann's a woman, and Julie is pointedly *not* a woman, which is a condescending snd hurtful thing to say to your own child, even if she is technically still under-age (and even without the sexual underpinnings, as in "I deserve your handsome and wealthy body more than this mere kid does".) It's worth noting that Ann *doesn't deny* what Julie's insinuating.
i feel bad mack Phillips was a child " star " because of her father and her only claim to fame was being a drug addict...she did movies but she wasn't outstanding......thats jim hutton
You reap what you sew,Bonnie.
She needed it. Both on and off stage.
Julie got off easy....I hate that Ann apologized for slapping her in the next episode.
With no disrespect, if a woman raises her hand like this, be prepared to take the consequences.
Sometimes very deadly consequences
I have to admit, I would have seriously thrown in a slap to BF after are slapped Julie, if I were McP. Imagine the shock on BF's face and the gasp of the audience if McP slapped her back and said, "You bitch!"
