Blue Mist flower is easy to pull up. I pull up a lot of it every year in my small garden, but always have plenty left.

I love my goldenrod, up here near Niagara Falls, Canada! I plant them for the bees & gold finches. I didn’t realize caterpillars like them too, I’ve never noticed. Mine grow in full sun, and partial sun. My native asters (purple/pink) are gorgeous in the fall season. I don’t clean up & allow my birds food all winter. I’ll research winterberry, thanks for your tips xoxo

    Great vid.
I really bash some vids here for their promotion of non native plants of any sort.

Golden rod (discussion of different Solidagos - rough, wreath, crooked stem, zig zag etc.) - top genus for supporting caterpillars; asters - New York, bog, white woodland, aromatic, heath, Boltonia (false aster); pearly everlasting; grasses - little bluestem, northern sea oats; blue mist flower; coreopsis; and turtlehead (chelone lyonii) in moist or shade areas.

Thank you for your video , many times I think about late fall , I have my Dahlia and Japanese anemone , and also Rose Mallow (hibiscus ) , but now I try to grow more native plant , so I use new England Aster and black-eyed Susan and I never think about goldenrod, that's really interesting and they can grow in dry shade , I learn a lot from you thanks .

Thanks for sharing! Goldenrods support so much life when few plants are in bloom.

As an Oregonian and fairly recent convert to natives through the Backyard Habitat program, I am inspired by your lush garden, your clear, informative speaking style, and your enthusiasm! It was surprising how many plants you featured tolerate shade, which I have in abundance between our tall house and a wild woodland behind us. I will be on the lookout for the Pacific Northwest versions, if available, of these beautiful plants. Thank you!

Hi Cheryl, thanks for commenting! This channel focuses on the northeast and mid-Atlantic, I don't know if it will be helpful to you.

I'm so glad I found you! I'm in southern Delaware, zone 7b, with a new property that's an empty slate (it was part of a farm), and I'm looking for at least 85% native plantings. So far I've got a pin oak, a pair of winterberries and a pair of beautyberries. Some pink muhly and purple love grass. I still have marigolds and nasturtium blooming, and in a nearby drainage ditch was a bumper crop of goldenrod.

Found lots of the plants you talked about growing wild in my yard by edge of forest. I was looking for asters and found I had them growing naturally next to house were deck was taken down and going to be rebuilt, so moving to location in garden.

Awesome video! What bushes and shrubs do you recommend for native insects and wildlife? Are there any that have foliage year round? I want to change out the shrubs and bushes in front of and around my house for natives but want to keep the coverage in the winter.

Sounds like you are looking for an evergreen. American holly (ilex opaca) would provide berries for the birds.

@@NativePlantChannel are you aware of any sources for American holly? The only sources I found were on Etsy, but they're too immature to know male from female.

In my experience, 'Fireworks' Goldenrod attract almost no pollinators.

Lordes, I really enjoy your channel. Thank you. I’d like to get an idea for my northern NJ garden. I’d like to plug lawn with natives ground covers like Violets. However, I’m concerned about stepping on caterpillars who host on natives. Any ideas?

    • @NativePlantChannel
      @NativePlantChannel  3 роки тому

Hi Karen, I have no easy answer for you. Start by putting the violets in the areas of your lawn that are least walked on. Considering that you might have few to no violets now, at least the fritillary caterpillars that use violets will have a food source they don't currently have.

I am new to this plant and just learning about. I take the pill but would love to grow the plants where do I buy the seeds. I would like to try to grow for my self. I was a florist for 23 years. Have a pretty neat collection of plants myself. I would love to add this to my collection.

I have a very hard time finding all the native plants you recommend. I live in Beacon. Can you recommend a good resource for native plants somewhere between here and the city or online? Thanks!

Idk which native plant nurseries to recommend in your area, but if you can't get to them then you can buy seeds from Prairie Moon Nursery online!
Also, try looking on this website: www.plantnative.org/nd_netook.htm

2.5 hours from you, you’ll find Edge of the Woods nursery near Allentown PA. I have family in your area and I agree there aren’t a lot of places that sell this much variety. Edge of the Woods is far but would you could do quite a haul :)
