I wish i can go back in time when the game was legit and everywhere to find.
N not 3x the price. I would go back in time n tell my younger self to not trade it in or to take it out of the ds before trading in that.
@@SIR1U5 right. I just picked pokemon back up and I realized that when I started my last Platinum run, I was closer to the original release dates than I currently am to when I started that run. Insane.
mines fake... another way to tell is a real one rattles, where as a fake one doesnt
Depends on the quality of the cartridge. If it's very old, then maybe not. But if its "new" and rattles, its a cheap fake.
Mine's counterfeit and doesn't rattle
This is true as i got black when it came out and it rattles now when i shake it
At the top you can see to small rectangles if you see them it’s from the original mold if it’s smooth it’s fake
Thank you so much. I really couldn't tell from the video if my HG was authentic but I shook and it gave a good rattle
Yeah my copy is fake...kept freezing and realized I got screwed. Be aware of Mercari sellers with cheaper than normal Pokémon games
That’s where I got my fake game from and made this video! I will be posting my platinum fake video soon!
PokeObsession people need to be aware of this, I already rated the seller so unfortunately I can’t get a refund
Brian should I make a video about Mercari selling fake games?
PokeObsession that would be great, I’ve tried reporting each fake I’ve seen on there but I have no idea if Mercari does anything about it
Yep. Keeps crashing and is slightly greyer than normal. Good to know thanks
Thank you all for watching this video!
If you need to know if fake games are playable,
here is a video about that: ua-cam.com/video/eyfiPxCjzCA/v-deo.html
I just noticed but if you look at the pins the board of the cart the real one is grey and the fake one is more yellow
Thank you dude! I was checking if my Pokémon White that I just bought was original and this video helped a lot! Luckly its legit
Zaxe 1UP I am glad this video helped you out! And that’s good you got an authentic game! I am going to have to start finding an authentic black and white 2 game for my next nuzlocke series
Kevin Roland I can help! On your cartridge there will be a serial code on the front. For example, in this video, the legit Heart gold version has “NTR-IPKE-USA” Take the middle piece “IPKE” and go to the back of the cartridge and in the serial code there has to be “IPKE” In it somewhere. I hope this helps you. :)
@@zxvamp legend that helps so much im glad i at least bought one legit pokemon game thanks bud
Wish I could say the same for my pokemon pearl that I just bought and wasted my money
@@angellara1113 aw poor thing :(
I know this video is 2 years old but I still wanted to say thank you for making this video! I just bought heartgold from online and I was verifying mine was fake or not. Unfortunately it is :(. However after seeing your video, I did notice that there were some red flags in the listing especially that it was a gray cartridge and not a black catridge.
I am glad to help out!
HI!!! Quick question! Does it matter if it’s fake? Other than authenticity will a fake hinder my experience in anyway?! Thank you!!!
@@DaltonDarkoX I had a fake copy of soul silver and when I tried to play the game with the voltorbs at the game center the game would go black and stop working.
@@DaltonDarkoX fake games aren’t as reliable and could crash at any moment
@@Mr.Slinky Correction, they _always_ crash, no exceptions.
Thank you for mentioning the black pokemon cards, I can't find another video which even mentions that, I have a fake copy of heart gold but I already bought a real copy from a major UK retailer which arrives in a few days
Dude seriously you point out so many flaws that are not pointed out in other videos, thanks so much
TML I am glad to hear how helpful this video was! I know how disheartening to find out your game is a fake and wanted to take the time to help others.
Who is the seller I can’t find any real to save my life
Thank you for helping. Now I know that I got a real and authentic SoulSilver from an eBay seller. Also one thing, the red marks on the cartridge are not glue, they’re actually from inside of the cart because if you flip the cart over and use a flashlight, you would be able to see inside of the cart because the cart itself is a bit transparent
Ordered a used HG on the Gamestop Website, and suspected it was a fake once I got a save error. Glad this helped me confirm it.
You are welcome! Glad to help! I also made other videos about different fake Pokemon games for the future.
Thank you so much for this. Just started looking to replace my HeartGold game from when I got scammed. This video really helped me to figure out which ones were legit or not! Now I have a genuine copy of HG!
You’re welcome! Glad to help!
Thanks for this vid! A friend gave me a copy of HeartGold and I was worried it was fake, because of some slight laggyness when walking through Goldenrod City or the music not fading out and just abruptly changing. But the cartridge had all the qualities of a legit game, so I'm good, *few*
I have a heartgold cartridge I just got from eBay- I can’t tell if it’s real or not cuz when I try to transfer Pokémon it says there’s no compatible cartridge
I got a shiny cyndaquil after 2 weeks of hunting on a HeartGold copy I got and it is fake and it keeps going black screened every time I try to get back into the game
I am sorry to hear that!
You just saved me from returning my heartgold thinking it was fake because it was black.. thank you sir.
If you shine a flashlight through it you should see a almost transparent reddish color
Thanks for the video. I bought HeartGold from Offer Up and and it turned out to be fake. The fake on is so perfect that if it wasn't for the infrared light thing I wouldn’t be able to see the difference.
You’re welcome! Glad to help!
i love how the official Nintendo seal is a way of telling whether a game is real or not
Thank you for this. Sadly I just bought a few repro Pokemon gameboy sp games without knowing what repros were. At least I know better now going forward
I have been playing the same copy of Heart Gold for around 8 years now, and i mever realized it was a fake. So thank you for making the video.
Future Destiny You’re welcome!
@GameXNations No, it was still there, i just never realized it was a fake
@@FutureDestiny7 is there any differences in the game?
Future Destiny does it save your in game progress?
3:18 I had no idea about the inferred I thought my soul silver I got from ebay was fake thanks man
You are welcome! Glad to help out! Also made a video about transferring fake Pokemon to Pokemon Home
Thank you so much!!! I feel so cool knowing I own a legimate copy of a sorta rare DS game
This video just saved me. Guy on mercari is selling hg and ss for 64$. The offical Nintendo logo is almost exactly like the one on the left, yellow is really dark, and he indeed confirms in his description that there is no red shine under a light
Wow, what a lifesaver! I got a new HeartGold for Christmas this year since I have so much progress on SoulSilver that I don't want to wipe, and I got this in my recommendations before I've used it. While watching I noticed my HeartGold looked a lot like the counterfeit, and I pulled out my SoulSilver (which is real) and they did look very different next to each other. The fake had the gray outside, missing sensor, misaligned white letters, and "The Pokemon Company" text was wrong. Gonna be getting a different one of those! Thank you for this video, saved me a lot of trouble before I started! :)
Have you tried playing with it? Do that and if it freezes or does anything weird or not normal then it’s fake
@@prod_JG I have not but when I compared it to my SoulSilver which I've had basically when the games were new, it was easy to tell it wasn't legitimate. I am going to be ripping HeartGold into an emulator on my pc and I would not want to rip a fake one!
This was very useful because I just recently bought Pokémon HeartGold from someone on Ebay for $80 and when it arrived, it was a legit copy because of the black cartridge, but I still wanted to find out more, thank you
You’re welcome! Glad this helped! I have more videos on other games when you are buying more games
The price is a typo. If it was real, it must've cost _$800_ not $80. It's understandable, typos happen all the time.
@@CJCroen1393 On Ebay, a lot of the DA games are around $76-150 cuz I bought another copy of SoulSilver for $78, and it was a real legit copy also
@@Foxy_Playz05 Not possible. If it cost less than 200+, it's fake.
@@CJCroen1393 I went to the game corner and my games didn’t crash when I played Voltorb Switch or whatever the Minesweeper game is called. I was also able to trade and transfer between them and my copies of Diamond and into my gen 5 games
Realized the counterfeit one look exactly like the one my brother bought for me, waste of $60 :(
Aww! I am sorry to hear that
I got a fake one from eBay but in its defense the game never crashed and was able to complete the game. The one thing you can’t do it’s trade your Pokémon to gen 5 it’ll say it can’t find a save file. So if you’re just trying to play the game over again a fake copy in my experience it’s pretty good considering the prices of authentic ones
The texture of the label is a dead giveaway, especially on the GBA games. GBA Pokémon games all have a metallic finish to the label, whereas fakes tend to be a glossy one.
Yeah, quality of the labels are bad lol
I feel so bad for the people who buy the fake DS games because they would think it is a legit one but it's not I went to a pawn shop and I saw 2 fake Pokemon Sapphire and Ruby and I knew it was fake so I didn't get it I put it in my Gameboy to see if it worked and it did but it had a box and said this game can be played and when that popped up I'm like no not getting it and one time I went again both were gone I know people bought those games and I feel bad for them cause if that happened to me I of course would be mad
Same! Those games are easy to reproduce because the gaming code is easier to extract than our newer games.
I once came across a fake Pokemon game back in July 2018 when I was at a Beverly GameStop.
IncineroarMan4055 what happened? Did you tell the sales reps?
@@PokeObsession No. But I think it's gone now.
@@PokeObsession Also, I was getting a PacMan game at the time when I saw it.
@@DarkChaosElfilis45 OOOOF! This is why I am so afraid of buying used games!
I'm currently bidding on a zelda link between worlds cartridge and noticed the CE logo looks weird, like it's been drawn on
The horizontal line in the middle of the C extends out beyond the edge of itself if that makes sense
my counterfeit definitely worked on my 3ds however it crashed at the game corner which is pretty common apparently. Really the best way to know is the cart's reddish transparency and the ntr-031 coding. (for hg/ss)
also, on the back. NTR-031 is the infrared cart (which a legit HeartGold and SoulSilver should have), while NTR-005 is the non-infrared cart.
Hey I know I'm pretty late at this but I had a question. I'm not sure if it was because of your camera but the your heartgold had bold white lines around the official Nintendo seal but your soulsilver didn't. Is that normal? I ordered a soulsilver from mercari and everything looks fine except it doesn't have a bold white line around the official Nintendo seal. I'm really paranoid about ordering online.
I would say soul silver would not have the line. Could be a graphic design perspective. But I got my game from target, new in the box. So whatever you see for soul silver is the authentic design.
@@PokeObsession Ok, well I'm glad to say that my soulsilver is actually real. Thanks! It was a relief that you responded.
I had the same question thanks
Instantly, yes, just from the thumbnail. Anyone who has ever seen a HeartGold dark red translucent cartridge (not actually black). It's made of the same plastic as the windows on TV remotes. It's the same with the Black and White games.
I just checked and my Heart Gold copy is fake but it plays exactly the same (I even got a shiny totodile!) Does this mean there will be negative implications at some point for my game or the cartridge just isn't authentic?
Yea I bought one from someone on Letgo, a I should have inspected it more before I bought it. I got the games and they keep freezing on me
Sorry to hear that. I have not used Letgo in such a long time. I think Mercari is a better app when it comes to buying used goods.
The sticker on the fake heartgold honeslty looks better. I got a legit heartgold but was worried is was fake cause the lettering on the sticker looks so grainy
Bro thank you so much!!! Just found heart gold at my local pawn shop. Bought it for $50 with DS lite included... Steal
Thank you very much! Do you think the price of the originals will increase and become more valuable?
The price if the original has gone up. It went from being $60 with game and the Pokewalker to $60 just for the game.
They will definitely go up. Legit pokemon games are very rare and it doesnt seem like Nintendo will put them on a virtual console or NSO. Additionally, theyre making new pokemon games and persons will always feel nostalgic. Youll always find that persons search for earlier versions they played. Heck the price probably jumped because sword and shield is coming out in less than a month
@@JoNoFiSh13 "Legit pokemon games are very rare" Uh... Excuse me? They literally sold millions of units my dude; far from being rare.
@@Xenoforge78 rare on the current market
@@JoNoFiSh13 I wouldn't say even then they are rare - just seriously overpriced. I have literally no problem finding copies of Older pokemon games like Heartgold, they're simply a ridiculous price.
hey so i buy reproduction cards which are basically the actual game inside a fake cartridge so are these technically not counterfeit? they allow me to trade, have every single feature on an official one, they allow me to transfer pokemon up as well.
Malamar Machine can you transfer Pokémon to the poke walker?
PokeObsession i don’t own the poke walker but i’ve been able to transfer my pokemon from emerald all the way to my real pokemon black i bought in store
Malamar Machine If the game works and you are not having issues, I am glad you are getting the best game play from the purchase!

so where is a good place online to get SoulSilver
Lukiegames but it will be pricey

@@CJCroen1393 Lukiegames is legit for games, I ordered Leafgreen from them earlier this year and it was real. Still works months later

Please answer I want to know if this applies to diamond pearl and platinum right? The red casing? I've been scammed twice and after that I'm researching a lot through reddit pokeforums and youtube. I'm not going to buy online again I'm gonna do meet ups or search for it in gamestores
My Pokémon soul silver I bought on launch isn’t faded since I’ve always kept it in a case when I wasn’t playing. It does have lots of small scratches on it though that you can see if you hold it up to the light.
That's cool! Mine is still in good condition too! Still have the pokewalker and the box art for it
Does the soulsilver version need to have a white outline on the Pokémon company emblem like heartgold does? Pls help
I believe so. I have it and I got it from Target and Pokemon does not change designs based on retailers.
Also, I have a discord channel where you can post photos of your games and we can see if they are real or not
Thank you for this. I’m planning to try and buy a copy of Heartgold tomorrow and I wanna make sure it’s legit. I really wanna shiny hunt, but I’m scared Nintendo might ding me if I move a shiny from a counterfeit game into a more modern game. I’m not sure if they can tell, and I really don’t wanna find out the hard way
I don’t think they can tell. All that matters is that the Pokémon itself is legal/legit
I've read you cant even shift them to other games if your game is fake lol
Did you get your shinies
so where can i buy a real one? i have a fake one :(
Maldito Alcaraz I am sorry to hear that! If it’s an old game, either game stop or a reselling store. There is Mercari and eBay, but that’s where the fakes can come from, since those markets are saturated with Ali express products.
Maldito Alcaraz you can find it at GameStop, in the Pre Owned DS Games Display case section, or try to find it on ebay, but make sure you look at the pictures very carefully, and make sure the seller has 100% feedback on their ebay account, and make sure the seller’s item location is located in the United States, and not Hong Kong or China
to be safe in buying a real one they usually go for 40 dollars or more
@@ThisGuyDannyyy sadly game stop also sells fake versions of heart gold and soul silver. Bought mine last week from my local game stop and I just saw this video and realized that the one that I bought was a fake copy.
You can only buy it if 1. You're a millionaire, B. You sell ALL of your worldly possessions, home, game consoles, games, blood, organs, hair and maybe most of your friends and families' possessions, then get 40 different jobs and work every single one of them 24/7 for the next twenty years to eventually get the money necessary to buy it.
Can't do any of those things? Then sorry, you'll never be getting a real copy.
I immediately spotted the right one just because it looked off .. size... colour... etc
That's great to hear! Let me know if there are Q&A you have.
Hey, hi, I have a question. My parents brought me Pokemon platinum back a few months ago, and then brought me another one from Gamestop, I think. My old one froze on me before the first gym, and when I poped it in the second time my DS2XL couldn't read it, I tried and tried and it wont go. I'm playing my clean not dirty or the sticker not look like is piling off one but I'm still 98% sure is real. I think I'm overreacting to nothing. Please help if you can.🤔

This is Nintendo’s fault for not just putting the damn game in Nintendo e shop then we wouldn’t have to worry about scams and someone tell me why there are idiots who think someone is gonna buy their fake game for 4000 dollars on ebay like come on.
Yeah, Nintendo really needs to haver better management with their past games.
Man these are so hard to get these are the last ones I need till I have all Pokémon games but I can’t find them anywhere:(

@@regulardudesrankingchannel5871 Where'd you get it? I highly doubt you managed to get a real copy unless you're a millionaire.
CJCroen1393 I called multiple games stops for Either soul silver or heart gold and after about 3 game stops one of them said they had soul silver and they hold on to it till I got there and it was like 40-50 dollars which is a good price
@@regulardudesrankingchannel5871 GameStop's website currently says both games are unavailable, and besides, the Current Event That Shall Not Be Named means I probably can't go to one. Would there be anyway to trade pokemon from a fake soulsliver to a fake black2 though pokemon white?
Thanks for the video man! I just recently bought a used copy of heart gold for a hefty amount and thanks to your video I can confirm that I wasn't scammed lol. It was real!

I didn't expect my decade old Diamond version was also a counterfeit while checking my recently bought soul silver version, thanks for the help man
You are welcome! Glad to help!
Daughter bought a used Heartgold from the mall, complained it didn't fit correctly, its a grey casing, font and font placement on the back looks wrong, no IR sensor, screen goes black at the same spot but the music keeps playing (probably a copy protection check fail).
Yeah, sounds like a fake to me
So are we saying there are no counterfeit Pokémon games that have a black cartridge and the red residue?
Most likely no. There could be some bootlegs that are black, but I highly doubt it because of profitability.
I know this video is 4 years old now but I wanted to point out another detail that can help people tell if their game is fake or legit. At 2:45 when you showed the back of the cartridges, for some reason a lot of fakes will have a number "13" on the green part on the pins. You can see on your fake cartridge it has the number 13 on the pins while the real cartridge doesn't. Not all fakes have this but for some reason a lot of them do.
Edit: Also on the back of the cartridges, the Nintendo logo on the fake is different. On real Nintendo logos, the i is dotted with a square while on fakes, the i is dotted with a circle
Not sure if this is across both or my 3DS being old but the one I have is fake and freezes very often. I have cleaned it and the port and it has been less frequent but stil happens a lot.

Wait, so Pokémon Diamond and Pearl had black cartridges too? Because I have both Diamond & Pearl, but they’ve never frozen on me. I even did the Void Glitch and transferred Darkrai and Arceus to Gen 6. The cartridges are not black, they’re gray
@@Foxy_Playz05 Just wanted to add my 2 cent - I was curious and checked against all of my cartridges which were all bought when the games came out (I was a very meticulous child and decided to keep all of my games and cases including the pokewalker stuff) and can confirm that this criteria only fits for HGSS specifically. From what I found, ds fake copies are actually good quality. They’re fake of course, but some sellers actually do a good job reproducing the game and so far I’ve found only one glitch and that was with voltorb coin flip. Of course some copies are crappy and will crash on you. If you’re lucky, you can get a good quality fake for a good price, if you don’t care about purchasing a fake for a cheap price.

I would say the same principles apply: Same graphic design and logo quality. Cartridge has to be black, never grey (when heartgold/soulsilver and Gen 5 games).
dang mine is fake so many signs D:
Sorry to hear that! Do you still have the game?
I just bought Soulsilver off Amazon to avoid getting a fake. I paid around $100 but it was *WORTH IT* since these games are the best of the franchise so I was willing to pay a bit more (normally I wouldn't pay more than $5o).

I got a fake and I got it from game stop. They are going to love when I come in tomorrow
Almost all copies are fake. You'll be wasting your time if you try again.
My Soulsilver is exactly the same as your real one... but that raises more questions for me. My Soulsilver cartridge is completely undetectable on my 3DS and has a hard time getting detected on my DSi XL. At first I figured it was a fake, but now I'm thinking the cartridge is just in bad condition. Thanks for verifying.
It's a shame, though. I might have to find a different way to play. Even on the DSi XL, it's difficult to play without the cartridge detaching, causing me to lose hours of progress...
You are welcome! Sad to hear about your cartridge
My Pokemon platinum cartridge is gray, I've checked all the other hints that could lead me to find out whether it's fake or legit and it seems to be legit but idk cause of the cartridge's color
Does the fake one do anything bad to my ds or any in game glitches
Its easy to spot fakes when they're side by side. The true test is not having a real version. Are these tips legit for ALL games or just this one game?

@@PokeObsession, oh cool! Thanks! :D
@@wi11ow8 You are welcome! Glad to help out!
If the game in goldenrod city doesn't work is that a clear sign that it's a fake copy?
Yes! In fakes, the games in the cities do not work
Yo, what's the background music from the start of the video?
The music is from Rob Ez on SoundCloud
@@PokeObsessionthanks fam! Appreciate the reply. Great video by the way. 😁
Mine doesn't have the letters below the ntr-031 and I cant see thru or the glue, but everything else checks out. How do I know if it's fake or real
epic gamer . Its entirely possible that those numbers have just completely faded out since they’re only printed on the cartridge and non carved. Although, if you can’t put a light to the back and see a red coloration its probably fake.
Did you watch the video?
Finding legit games these days is really hard especially if you live in a different country
I totally agree! Finding real games in the USA is a challenge lead alone other places.
What are the songs in the background? You picked really great songs!
Thank you! They are from this youtuber: ua-cam.com/channels/F3tMmW3NFsByFJ5znBtukw.html
hey! i still hope this is active, but i have a question about a certain thing that happened to me today.
i decided to play my heartgold once again on my ds lite (the cartridge is authentic, the game itself was very often ran on this ds smoothly) and everything was fine at first - it booted up quickly, there were no problems, everything seemed to work. that was until i selected to continue my save file, but it stayed on two black screens even after a minute.
this never happened to me before. the game ran without any problems before and i did nothing to corrupt it.
thankfully my 3ds had no problems with booting the save file, so i hope this was just a problem with the ds lite, not with the game.
however, i’d like to hear any thoughts on this - if this is just my ancient ds lite finally retiring or maybe it’s possible that the game itself has some problems.
thanks in advance!
aspring probably was the ds lite
The SD cards are pretty solid
Black screens mean that it's fake. Sorry, you actually have a fake copy.
what happens if you insert the game into your ds? does it hack it or anything or will it just not run as the regular game?

Another easy tell for heart gold and soul silver is that the game corner won’t work.
I hate this so much its almost impossible now to get an official copy that isn't a ridiculous amount of money :(
Thanks! I’ll be looking out for these things.
Jack Heyroth You’re welcome! Glad to help
Thanks, the infrared thing was a big help ❤️
You’re welcome
mine doesnt show the infrared on the front but everything else is what its supposed to be
I can see through my game but it doesn't read on my 2ds. Don't see anything that would lend me to believe it's fake.
You can post more about it on my discord channel
