I think things are improving over there. If it was still the same, then this anime would be complete by now instead of being in the midst of production.
Brothers and sisters, if you ever become obscenely rich, please open up an anime studio in Japan that doesn't overwork it's employees, and will pay them a good wage.
Not only that, but the character is supposed to be all full of passion that drives them to work countless hours. Almost like the studio wants to trick employees into following her example…
It's messed yea but realistically if you care about artist and animators the best you can do is support it. It's just capitalism and is really common for artist in general underpaid and undervalued (as most creative careers are) and heavily exploited. So watching this at least gives mappa money to pay their artist some instead of lay offs
Surprisingly it is believable! anime in Japan relies solely on your personality and skill level. I know 17 year olds already working for Japanese animation studios. It's a real thing! But def not super common.
In Japan how much you get paid is linked to how long you worked there, so job-hopping is discouraged. Japan expect to train every employee when they are new, so it didn't matter that they are straight out of school. Learning on the job is normal there.
Japanese animation production is notoriously bad, especially for overworking entry level, young animators. There's "okay" studios here and there; however, they are few.
Dang, even staying in a well and working from home via VCR zoom calls and she still needs to get on the grind in order to stay afloat. Modern economy is no joke...
Starting to believe that at this point, doing anything remotely productive means being "overworked" for a first worlder who works 6 hours a day, spending 4 of them on a coffee break.
@@protowalker What animators? They all have different roles in production, from minor to major. They also work on different segments, plenty of animators work on 1-2 scenes for a project and never do anything else on this title again. How many of those hours are spent on actual work? Japan is known for long work hours, but nobody cares if you are actually working or not. It's common for people to spend most of the time loitering or sleeping in the supposed 12h\day "work". @@protowalker Google "Karoshi" term and look at the map on the Wikipedia. Japanese hardly work at all compared to actual overworked, exploited countries.
@@johnjack3578 Yea, generally any creative career or entertainment career is you just get overworked. It's just part of it best you can do is consume to at least get people who worked on it paid even if it's not a lot because end of the day is if people don't watch, studio closes down all those creatives now don't have a job and have to either go somewhere else or do something else. It sucks but most if not all creatives understand this before entering the field you are heavily undervalued and overworked and not always (most of the time) fairly compensated unless it's a indie where they feel more inclined if it's not volunteer
Gonna be reeeal interesting when Mother's Basement or STEVEM digs into the production backstory of this one. Mappa aside, this is pretty much industry-wide. Having been researching it a lot lately, this struck me as basically Hayao Miyazaki: The Anime, specifically Miyazaki being a masterful creator of fantastical worlds while also being an unrelenting perfectionist tyrant who multiple times in his career almost killed Studio Ghibli by being an absolute terror to his own workforce, even making it hard to hire new animators due to the toxic reputation in the industry. "Oh, you want to work for the Totoro guys because they enchanted your childhood? Be careful meeting your heroes, that place will break you. Plus side, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. Which is good because after one film you may not be able to get away fast enough."

Imagine looking at the comments under the trailer. imagine the higher ups making a ton of money with this while absolutely nothing has changed for you. How do the writers sleep at night? The animators must feel so trolled.
writers get the same situation as animators. There is a lot of levels to production and regardless if you do not watch it they run the risk of being laid off because mappa didn't make money on it. It's capitalism
I wonder why Japan is so obsessed with genius characters, so much so that it’s become one of their main fantasies? Showing up in many power fantasy anime, the overpowered character that can tackle giant problems with little effort seems to be a very desirable thing to be. I wonder if this has anything to do with how hard their jobs are or how hopeless they feel on a day to day basis. Or if they think the incredibly talented person is the societal ideal and that people should strive to become that. It would explain the strong work ethic in Japan and how much they can sometimes overwork themselves to reach crazy quality.
Especially when their entire society is pressuring people to conform. You can't have a conformist genius. For true groundbreaking genius you have to break the mold of doing things the same way just because that is how it is always done. If only they could stop hammering down the nails sticking up a little.
Maybe just ask a Japanese person THEIR opinion/feelings on the matter? I do not think, though, that Western society doesn’t enjoy a genius. However, it does seem the West lately prefer Idiocracy, Homer Simposon, Kim Kardashian, etc = LOWERING the bar of expectation. Do not forget though, animation is made for kids, for unbridled enthusiasm and idealism. And, of course, we haven’t seen the work in full to obtain the exact lesson that will be conveyed.
@@tablescissors Yeah I could ask a Japanese person, and it would probably be pretty helpful, but my goal was just to think out loud, not get a perfect answer. Also not all animation is made for kids in Japan. If that were the case you could try telling a 9 year old to watch the Beserk OVA. Though when it comes to Japanese storytelling sometimes it can be easy to predict what can happen, especially when there are handfuls of stories in their specific genres starring similar genius characters.
