The pattern of a machine made rug is always very stiff looking with perfectly straight edges. The design will also be very generic. Usually all it takes to spot a machine made rug is a quick glance, but if you examine the back of the rug the rows of knots will be perfectly aligned while in a handmade the rows are never perfectly straight like a machine would do.
