Hello, I am from Kolkata. Loved your content!! I'm glad that you made it to Darjeeling which is one of my favourite places to go as it's not far away from Kolkata. I hope you had a nice trip there!!! 😊
I have fond memories as a young kid, eating breakfast at Keventer's with my family - sausages, fried tomatoes, eggs and toast, and their famous milk shakes, pony rides around the Chowrasta Mall, delicious baked treats from Glenary's, watching movies at the Clock Tower movie theatre and Rink cinema and attending North Point, St. Joseph's School ...more than fifty years ago! The large English-style building that you pointed out used to be called the Ajit Mansions (had rented opulent apartments) owned by by a wealthy family and the Oxford Bookstore has been there for over 100 years. Watching this from halfway across the world brings back some very nostalgic memories of places and people, some long departed. Darjeeling was much smaller back then - not so crowded, no street food stalls, fewer cars,, less pollution. Thank you for this lovely stroll back in time.

Historically Darjeeling was part of Sikkim but became a hill station favored by the elite of the British Raj to escape the Indian heat during summertime but the British nevertheless left Sikkim alone. In the 18th century Sikkim was briefly overrun by the Nepalese Gurkhas. The Sikkim king fled to China and asked China for help. The then Qianlong emperor of the Qing dynasty dispatched an expedition to Sikkim and expelled the Gurkhas and restore Sikkim's independence and sovereignty. Sikkim was left unmolested for the rest of its history until it was gobbled up by India in 1975. Sikkim's annexation by India in 1975 is even more sinister than Saddam Hussein's annexation of Kuwait in 1990. The Iraqis and the Kuwaitis are the same people. They are Arabs, speak the same language, same religion and same customs. India's annexation of Sikkim is a different animal. This is classic colonialism, there is no way to characterize it otherwise. Most people think of colonialism as in institution in the 19th and 20th century that don't exist anymore. Wrong. Colonialism is well and alive in the India's northeast in general and in Sikkim in particular. Hope one day people in this region will be free from India.

Yes the siliguri darjeeling line was a tough job, thousands of workers died during its construction as the British wanted it done as soon as possible and their safety was no concern. Similarly the konkan west coast railway line was also a challenging task, taking the lives of more than 15000 workers during a course of 10-15 years. Beautiful and yet sinister.

Mr Jason, it seems that while you were staying at the heritage room feeling like an aristrocatic British ruler, some ghost may have come inside of you and made you racist 🤯Otherwise, I can't find any explanation for you saying "as you can see the people here look quite different from the people in Kolkata". Care to explain? :)
There's a huge ethnic difference in the majority of the local population (while still being Indian). Stating that isn't racist at all, I think you need to check the definition.
@@JasonBillamTravel Considering I am from Kolkata, I think I do know the ethnic difference. However, that definitely does not allow you to talk about ethnicity based on someone's "face" or "appearance". Right? Maybe instead of asking me to check the definition , you could try not talking about facial dissimilarities and accept your mistake! :) But, have a blessed day man.
Overhead wirings and cable mesh, shabby makeshift hutments, poorly maintained pavements done with shoddy materials itself, badly arranged shops, trash and congestion makes this naturally endowed Himalayan town appear ugly, necessitating a proper beautification.

I like your Channel and the way you are presenting different non mainstream countries and cities. Algier, Algeria, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kairo, Egypt and so on. Keep on the good work.
You are heading to Mumbai. I would like you to visit cafes in Bandra. You would really like it.
R u here nice video
Overhead wirings and cable mesh, shabby makeshift hutments, poorly maintained pavements done with shoddy materials itself, badly arranged shops, trash and congestion makes this naturally endowed Himalayan town appear ugly, necessitating a proper beautification.
