Gardening. I'd love to be able to grow our veggies. We tried, but with a max 4-5 hours of sunlight on our balcony and limited space we didn't get much.

Ally I have been watching you and Kyle for a long time. Since both yall lived in that tiny apartment in town. I just want to tell you how proud I am of you for learning and adapting to country living. You didnt have to learn all that stuff about the tractor, chainsaws, powertools ect. You just could have stayed in your comfort zone of making your herb products, homemaker, gardener ect but you didnt! You have learned all you could about everything you could. And when it comes to the physical labor aspect of it all you are right there with Kyle learning and helping. All of this tells you alot about ones character. Honestly when you guys announced you were going off grid with the cabin I didnt think you were gonna make it. I didnt think you were going to like it and didnt think you were going to be as involved with everything as you have been. I just wanted to let you know I am so damn proud of you. Not alot of our younger generation use these skills anymore let alone willingly learn them. Not only learning them but totally crushing it with no whinning or hesitation. Atta Girl!!! You should be very proud of yourself. You are an exceptional human being. You two will be great parents if you ever decide to have children. Thank you for proving this grumpy old guy wrong. Keep killing it you are doing great!!

I used to create independent internships for college students in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS. It was so rewarding to see them take on new challenges and feel like they were making a difference in their own lives and the lives of others. I truly enjoy your videos, and I hope more young adults follow your example and seek a self-fulfilling lifestyle as you have done.

I am so happy to see you trying all these old world self reliant ways. When I was young I taught these all to myself and my kids grew up with me doing these methods. I worked at an interactive outdoor Pilgrim museum and learned to dye from vegetables. I could see your self satisfaction in your face when something home made and natural comes to fruition. There is no feeling like it. I think a few generations missed out on so much by not experiencing that feeling. Keep it up. I hope you influence people to not let these survival experiences disappear. A tip for your compost. Find a coffee shop to save you grounds. Nothing heats up like coffee grounds or simple grass clippings!

Ally, we’ve been composting for 30 years. We have two large bins. In the spring, once I strain the soil, whatever is not broken down yet, goes in the other bin for the fall. However, we plant potatoes and pumpkins in that bin and it’s a bonus planting bed. Good luck.

This was such a beautifully done video, Ally! Thank you for your content and letting us observe your journey. My husband and I have been watching you and Kyle for a while now and we don’t miss a video. One of our favorite things to do is make a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, sit on the porch with my laptop, and watch y’all’s videos. They’re so peaceful and inspiring. We started our homestead journey in the North Carolina mountains 4 years ago with .62 acres, and no knowledge or experience other than gardening. 2 weeks ago we bought our dream property! It’s a small farm of 4 acres with 360 Mountain View’s and 500ft of trout stream. It needs a good bit of work but everything is eventual, and I can’t wait to put our own stamp on the property with our 6 kids, 2 dogs, and 11 chickens! Next is more chickens (because chicken math is a thing), planting an orchard, a large garden for vegetables, cut flowers, and herbs, then acquiring bees, and goats. The big goal is to have a family milk cow and hopefully purchase the empty lot next door to give us 6 complete acres. 10 years ago it was a distant dream that I didn’t know would ever come true. It has been so neat to watch y’all go through the homesteading process and I can’t wait to see where you go from here!

Ah, yes, summer salads 🤤 I love them! And this year I tried something new: fermented carrots! I already cut the carrots in salad-fitting pieces before I put them in the fermentation jar. And now I have lots of jars with delicious fermented carrots which fit perfectly into these kinds of salads! So good, I can highly recommend that 😍
I'm also gonna build a new compost system, and up to now I thought about two compartments. But three, that might be quite handy indeed, too!

I'd say I've learned a lot of skills for self reliance BUT I still haven't mastered building a fire without matches or a lighter. That's something I'd like to learn before this year is over. I think it would be awesome. I've been wanting to buy a steam distiller for years because I'd like to have California Sagebrush essential oil (it's hard to find for sale online). It smells SO good! I grow it here at my home and I have lots of it. Also the yellow flowers produced from that plant are perfect for fabric dying as well! Great video--I really enjoyed it.

Lovely movie, extremely stylish and great message. I did find it a little strange that you peeled carrots with a cheese slicer though, I can recommend a vegetable peeler - takes much less off! 😂

I just had my Birthday at the end of July…
Summer babies 👶… !!! I think if I had the space I would love to have a real garden that I could rely on for a portion of my own food.

Since your making and uploading video I assume you have internet so I suggest you check out a you tube creator channel called The Holler homestead. Ben and Meg and their youngin's have a nice show and Ben did something I like to call little acts of genius. They have chickens and Ben took some hardware cloth, made a loop with it, and laid it inside the chicken coup. It's where they put wood chips and scraps from the table and dirt, and small branches and twigs and the chickens get up in it and dig around while pooping in it and they make rich compost for him. Now if you were of a mind to take your own poop and make a separate compost area for it and allow the sun to cook it for six or so months, it could be used to plant veggies in along with the chicken compost. Also if you can handle that you might be interested in the mineral rich content of human eurin.

I would focus on ensuring enough ‘brown’ things go into compost bins to ensure enough ventilation and then you won’t have to bother about transferring from bin to bin… it will be unnecessary hard work… just move onto second when first full…
