Why not?
In the past, in some cases countries or people were identified after the ruling dynasties that were sometimes named after the founder of the country: Ottomans (from Osman), Timurids, Qin, Ming, Qing (and other dynasties that ruled China), just to name a few. The reason for this happening was due to the countries/realms being multi-ethnic and at that time there was no such thing as a unified people (nation state -> nationalism). This was especially the case in Asia. In Europe we see countries named after former tribes, petty kingdoms, pre-feudal civilizations or dominant cities: England from the Angles, France from the Franks, Romans from the city of Rome. The biggest problem with the "European naming system" is that over time these names will no longer represent what they originally meant: England is no longer in the Angeln peninsula, France isn't a Germanic nation and the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire) didn't hold Rome for most of its years it existed.
A better example will be the so-called Holy Roman Empire:
- not holy
- not Roman (mostly German)
- not an actual Empire (the constituent countries of the HRE enjoyed high autonomy)
The Solomon Islands is names after king Solomon of Bible fame
Yeah, but it's disputed if Solomon actually ever existed.
The country where I was born and currently live is called 'Mauritius' after Prince Maurice van Nassau. In French, (which is a language spoken by most people here) the country is called 'Maurice'. I am trilingual btw which is pretty great. I speak English, French and Mauritian Creole very fluently. Lately I've been quite interested in languages and your channel has been providing great content. Thanks for the hard work.
Also there's a mountain here called Pieter Both after another Dutch guy who got his ship shipwrecked near the island. There are two "legends" about the mountain supposedly explaining the oddly-shaped rock on top. One says Pieter Both himself was transformed into a rock when he died. Another involves fairies turning a poor villager into the rock since he told other people the fairies existed.

Okay listen Patrick, I'm a huge fan but: The US is not named after Américo Vespucci, the WHOLE continent is. and bear with me in this: The US is only a part of America.
So when we say that America is named after Américo Vespucci, well, the continent is, not the country
Is George III named for George I? I'd say you're splitting hairs (and heirs).
Gonzalo Irala There’s North and South America. There’s no continent called America in English.
Wrong. It's named after America Ferrera.

If it weren't for US colonialism in Pacific, you would have covered Mariana Islands, which also named after spanish royal.
Actually, the residents of the Northern Mariana Islands were the ones that wanted their current status. I know this because Palau, the Marshall Islands, and F.S. Micronesia all became independent and they along with CNMI all formed part of the Pacific Trusteeship that the UN gave to the U.S. for stewardship after WWII, all those Islands were Spaniard, German, and finally Japanese until after WWII.
You could have mentioned Italy.
It's believed that Italy could have been named after Italo king of Oenotrians who lived in Calabria during the iron age
Hey you forgot the nation where im from. The Marshall Islands. Was named after a sailor navy in the 16-1700s name John Marshall. Who discovered the islands and made allies with my ancestors

*Philippine National Anthem intensifies for 10 hours!
FUN FACT: Expect a name change in this lifetime as the Filipino Congress tries to settle our archipelagic nation name-changing issue, in favor of a 30+ years old proposal to end the so-called colonial mentality issue over a despot's name and legacy.
Edit: the assistant regional manager made me retract my mistakes in this comment, so don't try taking me to the NBI folks for violating the Heraldic Code of the Flag & Anthem, y'all better be not offended by this...
well, while I wouldn't call Felipe II a despot, surely the name has a colonial origin, but the archipelago had various names from the inhabitants, as long as I know 5 different names (more by the amount of languages, but 5 currents)
+Ale city, I think he's talking about changing the name of the Philippines to "Maharlika" as proposed by the country's most beloved dictator, Ferdinand Marcos.
@@migukmoonpark4312 oh, didn't know that, it's changing to worse then, the colonial past left scars but shaped the culture of the country and that most not be forgotten, rather than glorify a person that damaged his own land.
That's just sad. Filipinas is one of the coolest country names. It's even on plural!
Lol man colonial mentality is not even real
Philippines is A spanish colonial too and Named by a spanish king
Wait...... so its mostly former Spanish and Portuguese colonies that are named after individual people..... Is it just me or is something weird going on here....?
Has to be their tradition of naming toponyms after "discoverers" (yes, even already-inhabited islands), Columbus Amerigo, Magellan etc. If you look up some regional names for places, however, other cultures either do not call them by people's names (Chinese, Japanese names for stuff are mostly generic), or have their own, weird names that are not internationally recognised (many islands, lakes, seas etc. were named after russians in russian empire, but those names aren't used outside of russia, and sometimes forgone for more-recognised names altogether now).

0:35 Funny to have picked Columbia, Mississippi, a far lesser known Columbus-named city compared to Columbus, Ohio and Columbia, South Carolina. Just saying.
The only one I, a non-american, know is Colombia.

Columbia River not Columbus, but yeah.
What about Republic of India (Bhārat) - In the Ramayana Bharata, the eldest son of Dasharatha and Kakeyi and half-brother of Rama, served as the king of Ayodhya as a sage for the 14 years of Rama, Sita and Lakshman's exile. His mother was the reason that Lord Ram was exiled, since she wished Bharat to become the King instead of Ram. Bharat was sad with his mother's act. He also attempted to bring Rama back to Ayodhya after his family sage Vashisht advised him to ascend the throne. He never sat on the throne instead he brought the paduka of Lord Ram and placed them on the throne. After 11,000 years of Rama's rule, Bharata also merges with Rama's Mahavishnu form followed by Shatrughana.
