That must have been fantastic! I would LOVE to have seen the original Joe Jackson Band in concert. The first time I saw JJ was the tour he did after the Volume 4 tour, so Gary Sanford wasn’t there, but Dave Houghton and Graham Maby were, so I came close!

@@lisajackson986 I think the world is ready for another Joe Jackson book. I feel like for being such an underrated artist, the older he gets the more people seem to be waking up. I'm not trying to give you an assignment by any means, but I will say that you got my attention from a single UA-cam comment.

    1. Night & Day
    2. Body & Soul
The reason being GO FOR IT; a song where he repeats a verse. It just kinda bugs me that he couldn’t come up with a third example for the theme.

I would rank Night & Day II higher. There isn't a weak song on the album and "Love Got Lost" is a masterpiece. It's similar with “Blaze Of Glory”.

I would rate RAIN higher than you have. It hangs together very well. As an added bonus I believe that all of the cuts were recorded live in the studio and the musicianship by Jackson, Mamby and Houghton is excellent. There is a filmed concert of the RAIN album available ans well worth seeking out

Love it. My top five in order are: Beat Crazy, Body and Soul, Heaven and Hell, Jumpin' Jive, and at number one...Big World.

On Laughter and lust I have it at #5. No filler and he has said “ hit single “ gets mistaken for a jab at popular music and he said it has nothing to do with music but it’s about being single and his friends and family’s obsession with getting him into a long term relationship and how he spurned their attempts.

Good list! I love Joe. My only gripe is I think Night & Day II is quite underrated. I actually like it more than Night & Day 1. But otherwise, I very much enjoyed your ranking!

  • @Dan-hc1ow

"Night and Day" was my first. He had me at "Steppin' Out". Then, I worked my way back to the first three (from the beginning), then "Jumpin' Jive", "Mike's Murder", then post N&D up through "Will Power". Then, I took a break and reconnected with Volume 4. I'm curious to investigate what he's done in the second decade of this century, thanks to your review. I will say this: Joe's work from the 80s brought me a lot of comfort this past spring as I was commuting back and forth between my home and my dying father's bedside. Thank you, Joe.

Going from memory here, but he toured LAUGHTER AND LUST in small clubs before recording the album. Similar to FOOL.

Came here to say this. I was lucky enough to see the L & L workshop tour at a club in Cleveland. He played most of the songs from the then-unrecorded album, interspersed with a generous helping of his classics.

Great list, Papa Nick! I'd love to get together over your beverage of choice and discuss JJ's career. PS. While we agree on the placement of Duke, my number one is Blaze of Glory. Subjectivity rides again!

Thank you for your accurate commentary. I agree with most of your opinions. I've been following Joe since 79. I'm here in Philly. I saw Joe at 68th and Columbus about 15 yrs ago in Manhattan. He was at the restaurant next door. I didn't have enough $ to buy him and his 2 friends a beer. I absolutely love your taste in Joe.

My understanding is that the songs on I'm the Man were all recorded in the same sessions as Look Sharp. That's why I have Look Sharp as #1 and I'm the Man as #2. The later less power-pop stuff is interesting, but for me only in the way that later Elvis Costello is interesting relative to his first four or five albums. I saw Jackson live when he was touring Night and Day, but can't remember if he played anything from his first two albums at that time. I suspect that he didn't.

I just discovered your channel and I enjoy it. Nicely done! I respectfully submit that you cannot possibly say that Laughter & Lust was “Joe’s last attempt to make a commercially successful pop album”. First of all, Joe has always said he is not at all concerned with commercial success. (And I’m actually grateful he takes that position.) Joe once said in an interview that if he ever releases something that turns out to be a hit, it’s purely by accident. (For his sake, I sincerely hope Joe has many more accidents!) And, as we know, Laughter & Lust certainly wasn't his last attempt at a pop album, as he has released five more pop albums since then (Night & Day 2, Volume 4, Rain, Fast Forward, and Fool). -Jeff

Thanks for the feedback! I based that comment about Laughter & Lust on something that JJ once said in an interview-I think he was promoting Night Music at the time. I can’t directly quote it because I don’t have a copy of the interview (I don’t even remember where the interview appeared), but the point he made definitely stuck with me.

@@PapaNicksMusic Thanks for your reply, Nick. (Actually, how should I address you - Nick, Papa, Papa Nick, 🙂) Now I have to repeat what you said - I can't directly quote Joe's comment about writing a hit by accident because I don't have a copy of the interview and I can't remember where it appeared. I just remember thinking how remarkable it was that he makes no effort to write anything that will become popular. I only know I saw it somewhere on UA-cam. If I find it, I'll report back! -Jeff

Mikes murder has the phenomenal Cosmopolitan which he regrets leaving off Night and Day in 1982. And dear mom is the best cut on Night and Day 2 which could be the extension of the Beatles She’s leaving home. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

🤠 Nice to see Beat Crazy get the recognition it deserves. Are you familiar with the track Cassava Piece by Augustus Pablo?

    • @PapaNicksMusic
      @PapaNicksMusic  5 місяців тому

I wasn’t familiar with Augustus Pablo, so I looked him up and instantly understood why you mentioned him. It’s interesting that reggae inspired pop, like JJ and the Police, appeals to me, while true reggae doesn’t all that much. It isn’t bad music to my ears, but it isn’t something I seek out. As much as I hate saying it (since I hate it when people say it about music I like), it all sounds the same to me.

I’ve seen him three times in the last 15 or so years, and he was fantastic each time. I don’t know that I could pick a favorite song, but contenders would be Not Here Not Now, It’s Different for Girls, Home Town, Tomorrow’s World, and The Man Who Wrote Danny Boy. (I know, it’s a pretty tame, bog standard list…)

also nick, on the now rare occasions when joe performs, he no longer produces new concert t shirts. this kind of drives me crazy. i am 58 now, a a fresh new t shirt always helped me hold on to that special night. silly i know, but i wear his shirts more proudly than any others.

I’ve only got one, from his Fast Forward tour. He came to Austin and San Antonio both on that tour and I caught both shows but only bought one shirt. The body was willing, but the bank account was weak.
