My neighbors brought their kid a small dog species and she dresses it up and carriers it out around everywhere. It makes me so sad cause when the puppy tries playing with the other dogs she screams and picks it back up in her arms. I don't believe kids under the age of 6 at least she be around small animals especially without adult supervision.
@@Emiology i had to kick my brother's friend out my room because he tried to wake up my hammy by banging on the cage 😠 i literally pushed him and my bro out. Also im unfortunate because the only place i can buy safe hamster bedding is pets at home
Yea...plus small children are really noisy. I also don't like that they aren't gentle with animals...unless taught to be. Some parents I'm sure won't teach them how to handle an animal
Where I live in Essex there are a lot of chavs that let their kids run around and do what they want, so these poor animals don't stand a chance, I just want to save all the little animals 😥😥😥
I have spent a lot of time teaching my kids about how to treat animals, I’m a veterinary nurse. This would encourage my kids to be loud and play recklessly around these animals. We keep pet snakes, I wouldn’t get our first until the girls had shown me how responsible they could be by self managing their play. There are areas in our home where they can let loose, in the room the vivs are in is not it.
@Zeynep CAN improper enclosures, becayse ut is catered to the needs of childrem entertainment rather than the animals. No safe spots to hide, downright tiny prison cells, animal neccessities not fulfilled properly, more children crawling and running around maybe tappig the cages taking a perk which causes the animals stress
Wow I haven't even finished the video yet but they're really marketing pets towards small children...pets are not toys or 'learning experiences'. Just because it is not a cat or dog does not mean they don't require similar levels of care.
I got my guinea pigs when I was 12 or 13 I think and it was a huge responsibility! I'm autistic so luckily I learned everything about how to care for my guinea pigs within about 2 months and we already bought them a huge cage to play in. I didnt know I was suppose to have 2 though! So I had to go and find another baby. Its seven years later and she is still with me today. :•) my girls taught me a lot about how to love and take care of things. If I wasnt ready to step up to the guinea pig plate they would have been far too much to handle for me. I couldn't clean the cage for a lot time by myself. I'm homeschool though and spent all my time with them. They are beautiful pets but little kids cannot handle them alone. They take so much work. They are like babies. They wake me up every day for scheduled breakfast. They require lots of veggies too that some parents will not buy...guinea pigs cannot survive on just carrots. They are expensive! Love them so much though.literally the best things to happen to me.
@unoriginal_name also,,, so hard to take care of guinea pigs at young age. Think about having to care for a lucus 😨 (just joke bc kanya profile picture)
I grew up with rabbits/bunnies as pets, my grandpa gave me a “big boy” bunny but it was a pregnant female so little 9 year old me and my family had to care for the rabbits. I use to check out books at school about bunnies just to help them feel comfy. I learned a lot due to that experience and learned that bunnies are kinda shy and sensitive and kids are the complete opposite of that and are basically walking headaches.
Animals as learning experience for children can be done right, giving the children experience while still ensuring the welfare of the animal. Definitely do NOT do it this way tho.
If I’m being honest, I’m quite impressed with the old enclosures. The old rat and bunny cages looked decently spacious and enriching. However, they’ve totally downgraded their care and the new cages look so small with no privacy. I can’t even imagine putting my rats in one of those cages. They’d be so bored
It's worth noting the old enclosures shown in the video are from larger pets at home stores. Other pets at home stores have smaller enclosures for example the old hamster enclosures are often half the size of the ones shown.
@@hannahlack1061 we have a large pets at home with decent enclosures and a smaller one that doesn't actually sell animals at all. Guess it isn't very consistent.
Comparing how the enclosures used to look to Pet stores in America (specifically petco/pet smart) those enclosures are one of the best I’ve seen. The ones in America are the worst and the rabbit enclosure can’t even fit a hamster. But, now the pets at home store I’d say may be a little worse than the ones in America 😢
the old cages are bigger than the ones at my local pet store (PetSmart). But they are only a little bigger than the ones at pets at home now at least they havev good hides. :/
Alpha Delle I take care of my own animals, and I am a teenager. It’s the adults who pay, but the care should be on the person who wants them.. My guinea pigs are mine, even if my mother paid for them.
@@meowsmakemusic718 I agree. I did the walking, feeding, cleaning, training for my dogs since I was 9 (which is when I got my first dog). My dad went as far as switching dog trainers because the dog school we originally went to refused to actively teach me (they were okay with me being there and watching, but they wanted him to be the one who handles the dog). The only thing my dad did, was vet appointments, because that's obviously not something a kid can do, but even then, I had to come with. Of course there were rainy days, when I didn't want to go outside to walk the dogs. Did my dad care how I felt about it? No! When I got my rats (I was 14 or so), my dad basically didn't even interact with them at all. It was all my job, because I was the one who wanted them. There's nothing wrong with forcing kids to take responsibility.
Meows Make Music I got my parrot when I was 13, I did the best I could, and I still have him and it’s going great. I know there are kids who are responsible. But it’s risky advertising directly at kids.
I'm a teenager and I care for all of my animals. I don't have a job right now so my mother/grandmother pays, but I am the one who cares for all of them.
What kind of 'animal expert' you must be to think that traping animals in a small place, exposing them to the loud noises and lots of stress would be healthy? Outrageous. They more likely do not care for these animals. If they did, it wouldn't be happening.
@@lwcaexii yes. They care for ones that will basically listen to anything the managers wants them to do and enthusiatic about making as much profit as possible while squeezing as much cost as possible and ready to advertise and push whatever they were asked to advertise be it abusive tiny cages and such
ANIMAL EXPERT??? This is just wrong. I would like to see them try to do this to my rats - they have a painful way of expressing themselves and would give the parents some leverage over their kids - "Hey, can we have a rat?" "No honey, they bite - look at that employee's shoulder!" "What shoulder?" Rats (and other animals) deserve much better than this, they make for amazing pets and THIS IS NOT OK!
Take a shot (non alcoholic ofc) every time I said "personally" 😅 but i'm not out here to be sued so I have to make it look as much as my own opinion as possible haha
@@Elizabettite Yeah, as long as you don't let the dogs have access to the rats. If you free-roam the rats when the dogs aren't there and keep the cage closed when they are, it should be okay. You may also let them roam together, but it depends on the temperament of the dogs :)
Pets at Home are going to need a zoo license at this rate. Ours started advertising their 'feeding times' recently which made me angry enough. This is just disgusting. Those poor animals.
Kitten Mimi I think it’s because if there are feeding times, it’ll attract kids to come and watch. Then the kids will tap/bang on the glass and shout while the animals are trying to eat. Then the animals might associate eating with danger and could get many health issues from not eating and stress.
I'm honestly surprised it even left the board room without one person being like "maybe this isn't the best idea..." although I doubt anyone high up in management has much knowledge when it comes to animal care and they just know how to increase profit.
Unfortunately kids are the main ones who convince parents to buy them a pet. So maybe their plan was the make it look fun for any little kid who comes in so that the kids can see the animals and want one so that the store can make more money from selling the animals. It's so sad and unfortunate but what can we do. All we can do is inform others and not support it.
Signed! Everything about that new design just screams "We don't care, we just want more money." That design would be a huge step backwards. Might as well change the name to "Pets for profit" while they're at it...
I worked in their warehouse, they went PLC & suddenly it was extreme, rabid greed like there was no tomorrow, suddenly staff became slaves forced to do overtime - all the time (was previously flexi-time), staff & management leaving in droves... I shudder to think how the animals feel if they turned nasty on their staff! So yes, money is all that matters to them, their products are extremely cheap from China, yet not so cheap in the stores. Corporate propaganda is a very thin veil...
I hope they dont do this to my local one :( It's like "hey do you want to buy a pet from us who's been traumatised already? Great, come pick out a pet from our Pet Village!'
The worst part is most children small enough to play in the enclosures are not even old enough to know how to properly care for a small animal. Pretty sure we can all agree school age children shouldn't have hamsters.
Filthy Planet it honestly depends on the child and their up bringing. They’re are kids in 2nd and 3rd grade who know how to care for animals because they were like myself and decided to research it as much as possible. I taught myself how to sex, breed and care for hamsters. Still this is a bad idea, in terms of the enclosure.
Yeah like the employees are going to tell other people’s kids to be quiet I can hear so many Karen’s telling them not to discipline their kids right now 💀🤷🏻♀️ these enclosures are absolutely ridiculous and I don’t understand how they think it’s ok for a hamster to be in an enclosure where they can barely stretch out with multiple other hamsters. For 6 rabbits to be in an enclosure that’s not even big enough for 2. For the rats to have no enrichment. See through hides? Seriously? I’ve been trying to help fight this issue for as long as I’ve known about it but it seems like we’re getting no where. I’m not going to stop though. I hope you don’t either! 💙
I know right! If I worked there and was suddenly expected to control other people’s kids I’d be mortified, I know how some parents get where their children can do no wrong and you’re the devil for trying to get involved, and honestly in this situation who can blame them when the pet section is dressed up as a playground 🤦🏻♀️
fanta orange Pets at home the company itself. Plenty of workers care about the wellbeings of the animals, the company obviously does not. Which is why workers are forced to put up with the mistreatment or lose their job
purple clouds my sister took her baby bunnies to the vets for pets to see what gender they are and they miss gendered one of them and she ended up having an entire new litter of bunnies that she didn't have enough room for
I love how pets at home title themselves as “Pet Experts” yeahhhhhhh pets at home we believe you , not like they’re distressing prey animals which can lead to a heart attack.
@@anna-qg1mc They still sell sawdust chews for small animals. Sawdust! And their rat care section is pretty much non-existent, even though they do sell pet rats themselves.
This is disgusting! ANIMALS AREN'T TOYS, have some empathy for their basic needs at least Pets At Home. Thank you so much for enabling people to stand up against this by setting up a petition site, perhaps we can make a small difference to these poor animals living standards X
Gosh, haven't been to Pets at Home in years, but I took a trip there today for some extra rat supplies (got my boys two today, they are happily exploring behind me as I type this :DD ) and I couldn't believe the change. Their stores were not acceptable before, but this is just ridiculous. All those poor animals being traumatised by the kids :(((( I will definitely be signing that petition!!
I’ve haven’t heard about pets at home redesigning their stores but it honestly doesn’t seem like a very smart design idea. Thank you so much for respectfully stating your opinion! This is why you’re one of my favorite pet youtubers
Pets at home left a rat by himself for over two weeks. I had to buy him even though I had 4 girls, he was sad ! He's a black hooded dumbo rat, he has the cutest face ever and he's very sweet, still scatty. He lives (neutured) with my 4 girls. And the first night he was with me, he had his own cage and was boggling his first night here because he loved his fleece blanket on his hammock ❤️
Pets should have a playground, not be one. *looks at rat cage. ....I'm not saying follow my example of spending all your money on homemade food and toys but, you know. Dont be cheap.
Pets are not toys. They aren’t a playground for children. This is nothing short of horrible in my opinion. It’s already bad enough that children buy a rat or hamster due to pet stores marketing them towards children. In reality, they are a big commitment. These animals need large spaces, not the crappy tiny critter trail. A living animal is not a toy.
Also I am a parent an I used to have a hamster for myself not my kids. My kids are busy enough with school, homework, sports etc. where do parents think kids have the time? Even for me cage cleaning is a 2 hour job.
why did they make this. there’s a pet store in my town that cares for the animals properly like proper enclosures and everything which is obviously the one i support! great video and thank you for bringing awareness!
Pokemonfeak1 it’s not always parents fault there is stuff like FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome), truma/PTSD, autism, and other mental behavioral problems and these can cause problems with the behavior is children
luckily this hasn’t been implemented where i live yet as it’s quite rural :( but im sort-of friends with the manager so ill ask him about it and try to dissuade it if i can :)
Ah, pets at home. When I was young, we got some pet guinea pigs from a Pets at home store. My pig was a ginger boy with beautiful red eyes. His name was gingernut. He was a friendly pig, and seemingly tame from when we got him. He seemed a little out of it sometimes though, but was a great pig. Too bad about the ringworm... yeah. All of the pigs had ringworm from when we got them 😒. Oh well. Just a small bumb in the road, right? No. Within a month of me owning him, Gingernut had to be put down, as he had developed some kind of brain cancer (I'm serious). After a few weeks we got another pig from Pets at home because I was really upset, and thought this was just a one time thing. My new pig was a very small cream and brown pig called Dusty. I wish he was in my life longer, I never got to know him... he died within a week from diarrhea. As a child, this pretty much traumatised me. Two potentially amazing pigs, gone in such a shot time. It's been almost a decade since I've been in a pets at home store. Never again.
I legit did a entire paper about why rabbits and small children are a terrible mix. This is mostly due to people buying bunnies on a whim for Easter presents and not understanding how complex they are. This kind of set up will absolutely increase the amount of bunny sales during Easter, which unfortunately results in a lot of bunnies living unhappy lives. There is so much evidence supporting the fact that bunnies and kids don't make a good pair, and I am appalled that such a massive company couldn't find the time to do any research. Young children developmentally can not grasp the concept of how delicate these animals are and have no sense of strength. At a stage where everything is sensory this can cause bodily harm to the rabbit and child. Not to mention the rabbits who are placed in a frightening environment like this can form human aggression which is very hard to reverse. As a bunny owner this makes me absolutely sick.
I got into a large argument with them on Instagram, they were clearly frustrated by the fact that I had done my research and had hands on experience, and there for they were unable to fool me. So much of what they said was untrue and I was told so many pathetic excuses. How about they take some responsibility for the animals in their care? This is ridiculous, and I can not believe the RSPCA would collaborate with a company so cruel
I’m from Chesterfield and I’ve seen this new format in person. They had 4 Syrian hamster in 1 tiny tank, they were all trying to climb out and were crawling over each other. I was so saddened to see the amount of stress they were in. Also, I hate how they call themselves “pet experts” when they’d rather employ a person without an animal qualification than someone with. when I talked to an employee there about the reptiles, the lady knew nothing about them, she didn’t even know how to handle them. It’s ridiculous.
The problem is prior to this Pets at Homes animals have no socialisation or handling before they are sold then they go to homes with noisy children and freak out then are taken back because people cant handle them easily x
my one thing is why can we not give animals privacy like why do we need to have see through hides and windows look into their tunnels why do we need this
their non interactive cages are horrible too. i was going in there to buy my gerbils food and i was looking at the hamsters. there was barely any space for them. the enclosures were about 30cm x 20cm
As a person who works at a pet store, I can say that we wish we could ban children from the small animals section. We have open enclosures and kids throw animals more than you would think. And parents like to think we’re babysitters and literally drop their kids off at our store. It’s not ok, and we wish we could close the enclosures or at least ban people who are horrible to the animals/ make them pay for vet care.
im glad the big pet store chain near me has re caged all their rats into *more* suitable housing. it went from tiny aquariums with 3-4 rats with mixed seed pellet mix and a bowl of water with 1 plastic igloo, to currently how it is now; a bar cage with 2-3 rats, a relatively okay size, proper pellets and a proper water bottle with hammocks and lots of toys. im so glad!
I always go to my local pets at home to buy supplies for my two gerbils and there are already children hitting the glass and running around as it is. when someone buys a rabbit from pets at home the rabbit will already be scared of humans from what has happened when they were in the store, it makes me so angry that a pet store that should be caring for the welfare of the pets they sell is tormenting the animals for their own benefits. Money.
I went into pets at home a couple weeks ago to get some supply’s for my dog and and the glass tanks for the hamsters were tiny! They had 5 dwarf hamsters in one small cage poor bbys 🥺💗
why even add a space for small animals to hide away if youre still putting windows where human faces can just hover and stare? completely defeating the purpose of those small burrow-like spaces that are traditionally put in standard enclosures
I know it’s been a few months and I live in America, but this type of marketing at my store actually caused 9 year old me to buy a hamster from there. I’m very sad to say that I did not know the proper care for the hamster and it didn’t live the best life it could. Now I’m 14 and I’m learning from my mistake and educating myself properly and getting a good sized cage and a lot of toys before actually buying rats. I am also looking into breeders in my area with ethical practices. This just goes to show this strategy does cause young children to buy pets who don’t know how to care for them.
I heard of toy stores allowing children to play with the toys in the aisle but when you aply this principle to a pet store this seems like a really bad idea.
This is good. I love how you are spreading awareness of this mistreatment for these poor animals. Kids playing, disturbing, tapping on glass, running around making noise, and more is definitely not okay. You, making this video that has gotten 177,419 views (From the time I made this comment) will for sure spread awareness and hopefully, just hopefully at least half of the viewers will start supporting you, stopping this horribleness and stop supporting these horrible pet stores. And yes, it is not okay to be getting rodents from rodent mills. They will more likely have cons, for example, sickness, fear, and more. I am not okay with supporting these new changes. Luckily, me and my family got our rats from a breeder and not some untrustworthy pets store. Again, thank you for making this video and informing people about the cons of supporting pet stores. I wish you the best of luck on stopping pet stores. Stay safe.
This is so sad, I'm glad you're speaking about it. Imagine if our apartment complexes had holes to peek through and crawl tunnels for small children.. it's the same thing. Every living creature deserves it's own space no matter what size. Also, your glasses are super cute on you!
I’ve never bought from pets at home but I used to like nipping in to see the animals when I was at the retail park because It cheers me up. Definitely will not be doing that anymore , this is just depressing
So many animals are gonna die from stress in this environment, even if the animals are in a silent environment they can still be looked at 24/7 which is stressful enough let alone adding all the noise, this coming from someone who owns rabbits. Sad that these animals aren’t even getting the minimal space they’re supposed to have (4x a rabbits length), both my rabbits have 6ftWx9ftL which is only the run around area, both their home boxes add another 3-4ftL that are attached outside of the run around area & my one rabbit who’s a climber even has 3ft high vert areas (my other rabbit isn’t a climber/jumper), my rabbits have more than enough space & im still in the process of wanting to give them more space, seeing those habitats makes me really sad.
Whenever we go to a pet store I always teach my 5 year old sister to talk quietly and not to tap on the glass or anything I feel bad for the little animals having to deal with this
We got our two rats from the local pets at home store and even thought they were both "health checked" by one of the staff who told us she has many rats herself, within an hour of getting them settled, I knew there was something wrong. We took them to the vet in the same store a couple of days later and the vet said they had clearly been quite poorly for a while! Pets at home foot the bill for the two consultations and medications which can't have been cheap. 18 months on and the respiratory infections have returned and we've been left with a £50 vet bill and scratches all over our arms trying to give them the medication! I never knew this was an issue and whenever we go in now it's so obvious that the rats for sale have this infection! They only eat the nuggets from pets at home so we can't boycott them unfortunately but I won't be buying live animals from there again after having the boys be so poorly through the neglect of pets at home!
I went to pets at home today since I was walking past and I saw a sign saying they are changing the layout. When I heard this I was so upset. I walked in and I could see people talking to the workers about how exited they were to take their kids there when its done. I can’t believe people are supporting this
there's a PetsAtHome where I live, and thankfully, the pets are well cared for. All the workers are well educated! I got my boys from there and theyre amazing. I hope they don't have this design!😥its horrible
To have kids parties in store is diabolical. Some Zoos can also be hired for parties, including adult parties with alcohol. This should is not acceptable and should not be allowed. Animal welfare should always be priority.
You know they don't care when in every defence they just keep saying "well it suits the legal requirements" and so on. Right but if you care about their welfare as much as you say you do surely you'd be like everyone else here and go above and beyond the "requirements" I know all big companies are like this in some way or form and it's just "good business" but when it comes to actual living creatures, you preaching how much you care all the time, and telling other people (customers) how to care for animals, surely you'd want to make a good example?
In multiple different Pets at home stores I have seen dead fish in the tanks and once I even saw a load of fish eating the dead one, every time I've told the employee and one time I told an employee and they didn't even think to check and multiple employees where around, and to make it worse the store wasn't busy at all since it was basically empty and I was one of the only people in the store along with the multiple employees
Maybe if they made the take a peek glass one way and make the enclosures a bit bigger again and scrap the party thing that’d be ok. Or even they could still do the parties but let the kids meet the animals one at a time and make sure the animals feel safe. I don’t think the ideas are dumb but they should have considered the animals safety before even putting it in stores.
Jeez, I thought Pets at Home was better than that 😬 Edit: also I just signed the petition and have copied the link to share it. My mum will not let me donate money even though she agrees with this. I’ll share it will my friends and tell them to sign it too bcs they are both animal lovers.
I am in shock that they are wanting to set up the tanks like that m that is shocking that they are looking to make it ' a kod play house 'that is shocking ans I am not happy with the way it looks
My local store I think has been redesigned but it’s a pretty small store which is probably why they didn’t make it into a playground. The enclosures have those red ‘hides’ but the employees did actually add extra proper hides inside which is good. I think some stores are ran well because they have employees who genuinely care for the animals and want the best for them and others like the owners are just there to get paid.
Imagine being in one really small room with see through walls with no where to hide. How anxious and stressed out would you feel if you had ABSOLUTELY NO PRIVACY AT ALL? And big scary creatures would constantly look at you, tap the glass and even scream and rumble all around your glass room? Wouldn’t that be absolutely terrible?
C F Maybe you can find a different store where you can buy similar toys in the same price range? If not, don’t feel too bad about buying toys there. If you can’t afford to go to another place it’s fine. But if you can it would be really nice if you would :)
Slurpy Durp I’ll try and avoid them. I don’t buy food for my rats there because I heard it could be bad for them so I’m sure I could find somewhere else to buy toys too 😊
I signed the petition. Pets at home are doing something disgraceful. My 4 rats have a huge 2 story enclosure. I feel so sorry for these wonderful creatures they don't deserve it. I am 10 years old and even I don't think it is right :(

I have spent a lot of time teaching my kids about how to treat animals, I’m a veterinary nurse. This would encourage my kids to be loud and play recklessly around these animals. I feel like the smaller areas just encourages the false idea that animals only need a shoebox of space forever. It makes me quite sad.
I learned a lot due to that experience and learned that bunnies are kinda shy and sensitive and kids are the complete opposite of that and are basically walking headaches.
ah, i’ve encountered a wild homestuck. we can smell our kind from miles away
Pets at home have the absolute worst rat cages ever, I've seen feeder rats with better cages then them
the old cages are bigger than the ones at my local pet store (PetSmart). But they are only a little bigger than the ones at pets at home now at least they havev good hides. :/
Why are they targeting kids? It’s weird. It’s adults who pay. It’s adults who (should be) taking care of the animals.
ActiveAnimals I agree. It’s just risky targeting kids. And the way it’s set up- they are targeting Really young kids- even riskier.
Bet they only think about profit not the animals
The ones hired by a shop that actively selects for employees who AREN'T precisely qualified in animal management or animal care.
Emiology why non alcoholic? Let’s get wasted 😂
True 😂 For my non child viewers, shot whatever you like!
Emiology fair enough 😂x
Haii Emi!! I have a question:
Is it safe if i get a rat even tho i have two dogs ?
@@Elizabettite Yeah, as long as you don't let the dogs have access to the rats. If you free-roam the rats when the dogs aren't there and keep the cage closed when they are, it should be okay. You may also let them roam together, but it depends on the temperament of the dogs :)

Sadly not 😢
I once killed A man with my shoe no not really. At least not rodents. But there is not really any petstote that have suitable cages unfortunately 😕
Bruh there’s like thousand of pet stores that only sells supplies it’s not that uncommon
emily can you chill.. I know. How do you know there are many in my area huh? Cause there’s not.. I was just saying
Pets at Home are going to need a zoo license at this rate. Ours started advertising their 'feeding times' recently which made me angry enough. This is just disgusting. Those poor animals.
I feel bad for the animals and employees. They didn't sign up to be zookeeper's or a daycare center.
Is it bad to watch the animal eat?
Kitten Mimi
I think it’s because if there are feeding times, it’ll attract kids to come and watch. Then the kids will tap/bang on the glass and shout while the animals are trying to eat. Then the animals might associate eating with danger and could get many health issues from not eating and stress.
@@kittenmimi5326 no but charging money for it is sad because they have to eat
@@jewelsthecat5331 I see... makes sense since this is in close proximity. In zoos the spectators are faraway enough to not cause many disturbances
Wow, I cant imagine what was going through their heads when they decided to implement this. This is just asking for disaster :(
I'm honestly surprised it even left the board room without one person being like "maybe this isn't the best idea..." although I doubt anyone high up in management has much knowledge when it comes to animal care and they just know how to increase profit.
It reminds me of at like science centers, they do this too
Money, that's what they were thinking
@@eclaire1748 at scuence centere it maybe good as it gets kids interested but not with living animals ;-;
They did this to my local store, my rat has a respiratory illness now.
The worst part is most children small enough to play in the enclosures are not even old enough to know how to properly care for a small animal. Pretty sure we can all agree school age children shouldn't have hamsters.
It looks more fitting for a daycare or preschool learning area for kids. (Yes I’ve seen something like this for kids). Except without the animals
@@Yogirliej4dee yep. This is a good idea if it does not include living animals
Arent high schoolers technically school aged chldren? But I agree Preschoolers are not old enough to be caretakers.
Lol my friend gave his hamster half a room to run around in
Oh no😢 This is not okay! Pets are not toys and do not belong in a playground...
Only kids use play grounds
I think the interactive learning thing is pretty cool but definitely shouldn’t be in a pet store and involving live animals.
Children sometimes taunt animals for fun, so no this is a horrible idea.
Emiology exactly! God this is just so infuriating
They just want money, they don’t care a single bit about the animals well-being it’s so sad.
fanta orange Pets at home the company itself.
The people that go through all the training for animal care and how to set up the enclosures don't design how they look or these new enclosers
Lewis Arthur not related to the animals in the video but, they also sell raw Hyde, which I've heard can be dangerous for dogs.
I have never heard of Pets at Home and I'll admit, at first I thought... where else are we supposed to keep our pets? But yeah, that sounds terrible.

Gosh, haven't been to Pets at Home in years, but I took a trip there today for some extra rat supplies (got my boys two today, they are happily exploring behind me as I type this :DD ) and I couldn't believe the change.
I love this for him 🥲🥰 I know he had an amazing life with you!
The new skittish rat I had finally purred with me after some good behind the ear scratches. It sounded like the purrs ginea pigs do
Aww it's strange going back to this comment now. He did live a good life with all of his girlfriends, he was a happy boy ❤️
I agree with you. We don’t need any more fuel to the fire of animals being seen as toys by children. Professionalism, albeit in moderation, is key.
Pets should have a playground, not be one. *looks at rat cage. ....I'm not saying follow my example of spending all your money on homemade food and toys but, you know. Dont be cheap.
Everything has to be about entertainment for non responsible children where they would squeeze and shove their elsa dolls in the poor animals face
Absolutely ridiculous. People already let their kids run riot in the stores now the stores themselves are encouraging it around these prey animals.
I don’t like children
Neither do I 😂
Same fur children only 😂
They are fricking disgusting little brats
I don't like the children of irresponsible parents that don't whip their kids into shape. That's the parents fault not the kids.
Pokemonfeak1 it’s not always parents fault there is stuff like FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome), truma/PTSD, autism, and other mental behavioral problems and these can cause problems with the behavior is children
Pets at home...more like pets at hell 😡
luckily this hasn’t been implemented where i live yet as it’s quite rural :( but im sort-of friends with the manager so ill ask him about it and try to dissuade it if i can :)
He prbly can’t stop it. Normally that’s a corporate decision.
Unfortunately it will be a head office decision :(
Ah, pets at home.
I only support my local pet stores who "sell" animals that are small local places that adopt out animals and are partenered with local shelters :)
Im in America never heard of this store.

I'm so thankful that my local Pets at Home isn't going to be doing this. These poor animals! How can someone think that this is an okay thing to do?
My local pet at home has not done this yet luckily!
Signed and sent to family and friends, who've signed too. This is an absolutely stupid idea, who in their right mind thought it sounded good??
im glad the big pet store chain near me has re caged all their rats into *more* suitable housing. it went from tiny aquariums with 3-4 rats with mixed seed pellet mix and a bowl of water with 1 plastic igloo, to currently how it is now; a bar cage with 2-3 rats, a relatively okay size, proper pellets and a proper water bottle with hammocks and lots of toys.
They really need interactive educational activities which teach them how to handle and care for each species x

Stay safe.
I hardly ever go to Pets at Home because I get so wound up when I do 😠
Hi Ray tastic isn't this terrible the poor lil due babies!
Whenever we go to a pet store I always teach my 5 year old sister to talk quietly and not to tap on the glass or anything I feel bad for the little animals having to deal with this
The reason I get them from pet stores is because I want to give them a better home by living in my house with a huge cage
when i went to pets at home to get my hamster a few months ago they gave a leaflet with wrong hamster info

They only eat the nuggets from pets at home so we can't boycott them unfortunately but I won't be buying live animals from there again after having the boys be so poorly through the neglect of pets at home!
this is disgusting. I' m so glad this has'nt happened to my local pets at home, especially bc its near a nursery. The poor animals
The pets at home near me has done this and it is so sad. It’s almost like the animals they sell are just objects😢
I went to pets at home today since I was walking past and I saw a sign saying they are changing the layout. When I heard this I was so upset. I walked in and I could see people talking to the workers about how exited they were to take their kids there when its done. I can’t believe people are supporting this
I signed the petition and donated
there's a PetsAtHome where I live, and thankfully, the pets are well cared for.
Right but if you care about their welfare as much as you say you do surely you'd be like everyone else here and go above and beyond the "requirements"
I know all big companies are like this in some way or form and it's just "good business" but when it comes to actual living creatures, you preaching how much you care all the time, and telling other people (customers) how to care for animals, surely you'd want to make a good example?
In multiple different Pets at home stores I have seen dead fish in the tanks and once I even saw a load of fish eating the dead one, every time I've told the employee and one time I told an employee and they didn't even think to check and multiple employees where around, and to make it worse the store wasn't busy at all since it was basically empty and I was one of the only people in the store along with the multiple employees
I feel so bad for these pets, mainly because they can’t do anything about it. They can’t talk and they just live this horrible life.
Jeez, I thought Pets at Home was better than that 😬
Edit: also I just signed the petition and have copied the link to share it. My mum will not let me donate money even though she agrees with this. I’ll share it will my friends and tell them to sign it too bcs they are both animal lovers.
Don’t donate! I don’t know why the website brings that up after you sign but it doesn’t seem to go anywhere 😳
I am in shock that they are wanting to set up the tanks like that m that is shocking that they are looking to make it ' a kod play house 'that is shocking ans I am not happy with the way it looks
Thank you for spreading the word Emi! I have shared the link to your petition on Facebook! I feel really bad for the poor animals! 💗😔
I was super confused at first.
I was like "where else should I have my pets if not at home?" But to my defense I'm sick and exhausted.
The previous enclosures actually looked pretty decent. WAAAY better than most pet stores, which is sad.
I live in Melbourne Australia and I have NEVER seen any small pets being sold in pet stores only fish and cats from a shelter, I guess I’m just lucky
I signed this petition so quickly after it came out!! So glad to see people with a following talking out about it!!
"our enclosures exceed minimum pet shop licensing standards" yeah okay what about actual animal welfare standards??? tf?????????
My local store I think has been redesigned but it’s a pretty small store which is probably why they didn’t make it into a playground. The enclosures have those red ‘hides’ but the employees did actually add extra proper hides inside which is good. I think some stores are ran well because they have employees who genuinely care for the animals and want the best for them and others like the owners are just there to get paid.
One time I saw a rat in a small tank in a pet store and it was running around in circles :(
there was something wrong with the poor baby
Your name is Emily and you signed a petition, what a great combo
Imagine being in one really small room with see through walls with no where to hide. How anxious and stressed out would you feel if you had ABSOLUTELY NO PRIVACY AT ALL? And big scary creatures would constantly look at you, tap the glass and even scream and rumble all around your glass room? Wouldn’t that be absolutely terrible?
Slurpy Durp This makes me so sad, I don’t know if I’ll be buying toys or anything for my rats there anymore
C F Maybe you can find a different store where you can buy similar toys in the same price range? If not, don’t feel too bad about buying toys there. If you can’t afford to go to another place it’s fine. But if you can it would be really nice if you would :)
Slurpy Durp I’ll try and avoid them. I don’t buy food for my rats there because I heard it could be bad for them so I’m sure I could find somewhere else to buy toys too 😊
C F I also own rats (and mice) I find eBay to be perfect, there’s a wider range of toys, and it’s often cheaper than pet stores xx
Morning Rose For some reason I didn’t even think of eBay! Thats a good idea thanks 😊
I signed the petition. Pets at home are doing something disgraceful. My 4 rats have a huge 2 story enclosure. I feel so sorry for these wonderful creatures they don't deserve it. I am 10 years old and even I don't think it is right :(
