This is the by far the best resource I've been able to find for my 97 ZJ. Simple, thorough, good camera work, no frills. Thanks dude.
Does 97 zj need to have it rear diff fluid changed ? Just got 97 zj Laredo
Great production. We’ve had at least one ZJ consistently since 1994. Currently 4 in-service. Such great utility vehicles and once you learn the few quirks, easy to maintain.
Im not a jeep guy, but my mans got the waukees and the wire wheel, top work my dude
I dont easily give accolades but in regards to you and your channel I must. Ive watched several of your jeep zj service and maintenance videos. Every single one has been concise, educational and professional. A very BIG "thank you", for your knowledge, mechanical expertise, attention to detail and overall representation. I personally have been helped and my mechanical knowledge has expanded, because you took the time to share what you've learned with others. Very, very, cool...
Who would
Well saie. This guy is above awesome.
Dude, i just bought a 98 GC 5.2 and you cover just about every question i have, thx again
First off - Thank You.
After watching a bunch of other videos where people just want to talk about themselves… this is a huge refreshment.
There is a ton of helpful information here and the poster is on point - he did his research! Thanks again!
Every time I look up a tutorial for my jeep and I see barricade garage its such a relief man, you're so informative and down to the point. Hands down the best channel out there
Why 10 dislikes?!
He's doing a great job...
Greetings from Germany!
We have a lot of haters in the USA!
There's always gonna be haters. Probably because he didnt wire wheel the outside and repaint it before putting it back on. Lol. No I didnt unlike. I'm not an ass hole like that. The purpose of the video was right on.
Probably because he did it the HARD (thorough) way.
Great video, BG!
I know I'm late to the party but you're a legitimate mechanic.. I thought you were just a funny DIY guy, but then I watched more videos.
He’s got all mopar parts lol
For those who haven't yet changed gear oil - fair warning - that stuff REEKS! Make sure you have a good hand cleaner as well.
You don't like the smell...hmm. I always thought sour sticky icky goo was your favorite smell and feel. Don't even get me started on the burnt up differentials, i love me some swamp water smelling gear oil. Had one so bad i was gagging taking it out, we put some in a styrafome cup and i didn't keep it near by bay as that shit was rank.
Just curious how much ball park estimate would cost me from my local mechanics to have both my diffs fluids changed+ both new gaskets, fluid materials & the transfer case fluid changed as well? And typically if I have this done do mechanics generally clean scrape out the old worn stuck gaskets out?
You should smell 44 year old fork oil 😳
@@lstruggy it’s so damn easy to do why would you waste money on someone else to do a 30 minute job
@@lstruggy I know it's been almost a year since this question was asked, but just for reference if anybody else sees it. It all depends on where you live, but you're looking at about $80 to $150 per differential and probably about the same for the transfer case.
Also that's not a gasket it's RTV. They will scrape all of it off, but how well it is done depends on the technician. Most technicians will clean the surface until there is no gasket. They more than likely will not use a towel on the gears though. They will brake clean the crap out of it.
If you have some time to do it yourself you save so much money though. You might spend 10 to $20 per differential and maybe the same for the transfer case. One tube of RTV could do both differentials for like six bucks. So you can probably do your own car for between 50 and $100 versus a couple hundred.
Amazing dude I got a 98 with 130 on her. You helped me so much n I appreciate it .. the dislike ppl probably drive a Prius 🙄
Thank you for these videos. They help me feel less freaked out.
hey man. i have a 96 Zj and ive been putting a ton of work into it. I love it to death and i love your videos just as much. You are very informative and you know what you are talking about. I love your content and can't wait to see more
Thanks for the support
Wow, great job, clear, informative. Wish more how-to videos were this good.
Another great video! Best zj channel on you tube!
Thanks bro
Great video! I jacked my WJ up and supported it by the frame with jack stands and lowered the differential to make it a bit easier to access the upper bolts and re-fill it.
UK ZJ (ZG) owner here, thanks for your really helpful videos and sorry we forgot to tell you to re fit that tag! By the way, really envious of your V8 with the tougher diffs but over here my 4.0 is still a relatively big engine, sounds great and still makes this 1990's jeep faster than a lot of cars. Very very rare cars here now and i havent seen another one on the road for years.
So do have the 3.73 limited slip diff? I do and with the 4.0 also, as it's a 1993 ZJ Laredo
@@toddrhine7648 Not sure of the gear ratio but my UK ZJ has the limited slip diff and needs the special additive to keep it running smoothly without the banging and creaking it makes when the oil wears thin. Its not practical to use a 25 year old 4 litre here in the UK due to commuting distances in my job and the price of fuel (£1.40 per litre) so the vehicle is a spare car that i have built up some history with. Ironically, although arguably a lesser vehicle its the XJ that has captured the hearts of british wannabe Jeep owners although my ZJ still turns heads being so rare even if - at the moment - its still not actually worth very much.
@@jjs3287 So what gear oil did you actually put in it? Brand, Weight, Ect...also did you have to buy the friction modifier separately or does is it already mixed in it?
@@toddrhine7648 Mobil Mobilube 75w-90 Fully Synthetic Performance gearbox oil. I did front and back diffs. From memory 3 litres was enough but you should be able to look this up. Now, last time i bought friction modifier i got obsessed with getting the Chrysler recommended stuff and although the popping and grinding reduced it didnt go completely. This time i used REDLINE Limited slip differential friction modifier / break in additive and put in the entire 4oz bottle full. No noise whatsoever! Best its ever been.
@@jjs3287 Thx much for that info. Yeah why should we waste the high $ money for the Manufactures stuff especially when that was outdated stuff so to speak. I hear once the clutch plates I believe its called wear in a Limited Slip Diff it basically turns into an Open Diff. Those plates go after 25,000 mi or so I believe.
The best auto repair video I have watched. Mic drop!
Thank you Sir
Thanks for doing this man. Seeing it done gives you the confidence to do It yourself when you see that it's not too daunting, just some things you need to be careful about, which you point out
Bro the best videos ever I get a ZJ like a 1 week ago and all this videos are so helpfully for me Thks a lot
You make working on my jeep less scary. I appreciate.
Crazy detail on this video amazingly informative for all differentials
After reinstalling the diff cover, I usually don't fully seat the cover to the diff (about a 1/16") untill I let the gasket material set up. This prevents the gasket material, while still in liquid form, from squishing out of the sides of the cover, or into the diff, and leaves a little extra material in your gasket.
Thank you... No horse and pony show. Just the info I wanted. Alpha Bravo
Good job .. very professional
Thanks
This guys articulation was on point. I appreciate you being thorough. 👌🏼👌🏼
was having a hard time figuring out the Dana model for my jeep, I appreciate your videos!!
Hey buddy how you doing I got a 1997 5.2 4x4 ZJ with 240,000 mi runs perfect. Well almost. And in pretty good shape. Rebuilt the entire interior.
Met a guy with the exact same car as mine with 400,000 mi on it.
That thing also runs perfect.
He said he was trying to kill the engine because he has a balanced and blueprinted engine ready to go into his car but he just couldn't kill that 5.2.
Gives me a lot of Hope that I can get my car to 400k.
Anyway, thanks for all your help. Love the videos love the channel. Love my ZJ
Videos are helpful and easy to follow. Need to fix lifter ticking in my 98 Jeep GCL 5.2.
"Since you guys let me forget to put the tag back on " lol this guy is my favorite youtube mechanic
Brilliant video as always just waiting on my friction modifier then it's time for my rear diff oil change
So does this mean you have the Limited Slip Diff? I believe I do with my 93 ZJ 4.0. Select-Trac. But I'm curious on what exact Gear Oil to use. Modifier already mixed in it or get it separately?
Have I heard you before on Seasame Street? Lol. Good work dude
Thanks again....my 96 5.2L GCL loves these
I would have upgraded to a new diff cover. The one I got was way beefier than the stock one. I do go offroad though.
Great vid as always.
Always excellent videos 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 . Keep spreading the knowledge ...
The Dana 44 in my 01 TJ makes a loud bang if I make turns too sharp. If I drive easy, it doesn't seem to do it. Per this video, I'll be pulling the cover to see if anything is grenaded in there, then I'll do a fluid change. Excellent info as always.
Thanks for these how-to Jeep vids. I'm getting ready to do this and your vids are the most helpful.
Thanks. Heres the playlist with all my Jeep videos

I enjoyed your video. Very informative. I like the way you work nice and clean. Very professional
Good job
When you break the seal it can be helpful to leave the top bolt in, but loose, it is less likely you'll drop the cover into the old gear oil.
I see everyone doing that but if you stick a finger in the fill hole like I did and tap it with a hammer you can control it better
Thank you, Barricade Garage.
Appreciate that website and the end! That can be really helpful for people. I know I’ll probably end up using it!
Even though I have done this before, alway good information, thanks for dana link
GREAT VIDEO. Very Helpful. Very Clear and Precise. Thanks for this.
Great video!!! Diff fluid is always overlooked but not as much as supercharger oil! There is actually a TON of overlooked maintenance. Like periodically replacing or cleaning turbo oil screens. A blown turbo from lack of oil will definitely affect the engine as well.
Damn BG..... excellent video man!
But you know that already!!
great info, thanks for the link to find out what the numbers mean on the tag. I found a rearend to swap with my bad rear end, and you helped me to see if they were compatible.... thankyou
This is a great video, one of the best. Thanks much.
Young man, great video with lots of good information. Thank you for sharing!
Miss this stuff. Still enjoy you tho 😘
Excellent work
Really good video. Good camera work.
Good videos and good vehicles to 💯
very good video and i really like the explanation of hoe a differential works. nice job!
Beautiful work, excellent information, and great production. Thank you. Sorry I made you forget the ID tag.
Nicely done Barricade!
Love this man thanks. keep it up
/Tom, Sweden, above the artic circle=)
Thanks for the support
Thanks for this video. Very informative..
Well done 👍🏾
Thanks big bro
Very good video. To the point thank you
Excellent vid! I had no idea about the BOM numbers and the info it has. Cheers!
Nice job on the video, thanks
Great video bro.
clear and concise
thanks man, I learned a lot
GRACIAS COMPADRE !! Trabajo perron y conciso. BUENA DEFINICIÓN DE LO QUE ES EXCELENCIA EN LA ESTRATEGIA. THANKS BRO. 👊👊✌

Nice video bro,thank you...
Hey dude,you made amaziñg video...thanks
Legal seus vídeos!! Parabéns..Vou fazer no meu jeep zj v8 5.2 tbm ..abraços!!! Brasil!!
Thanks amigo for the help. Take care and God Bless you.
Yeahhh!! Nice mate👍
dude your legit
Very professional and informative video. That rubber plug is available new if u need, I've got a video on that. Just subbed!
Well done sir, thanks for the help.
Check out LubeLocker! Way better then using gasket sealant. It’s a gasket that you can reuse and easy
Great description on the ID tag and what they mean. I like to pull the covers to see what's going on inside the diffs especially on my ZJ it has 276k on everything except the balljoints and U jonts ect... I was thinking about Axel seals and bearings for the rear end it's the Dana 44 or should I leave it alone? Like Gma said if it ain't broke don't fix it 😂
I would leave it alone
@Jim Putkowski im not sure but it should be ok where you put it as long as its out of the way
Yo, just bought an 04 Jeep GCL ...been needing to do this for weeks. Also has leak I need to deal with.
Our rear tires spin in opposite directions, yet has a tag on one of the bolts saying to use Limited Slip Lube only. The cover does look like a D44, so is it possible there are more than two variations? Either way, we will try the dealership and give our VIN to see what's going on there. AND, as many have been saying, great video's, very helpful!
Well done video!! One question how do you know when you have refilled the fluid to the correct level, til it comes out the fill hole?
The manual doesnt have a capacity listed for the 44a so I filled it until it was just under the fill hole which is 2 quarts
@@barricadegarage5361 right on thank you for the reply!
Dude, that was great. Thank you
excellent vid. TY
well done
Deff a thumbs up and subscribed to yah. Really hoping you may answer this for me! I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado 4.0 inline 6. I believe I have the Dana 35 Limited Slip (rear diff) when you say I nd to use a friction modifier to the gear oil "how" and what type do I need for the application? Does it come mixed already in limited slip oils? Went to the site to get the info on what I have and would'nt let me in it!
Now quick weld it up. Linken lock it 😹. Good video
Thanks man but what about 2008 patriot? It's AWD all-time with a 4x4 low. I don't see a single bolt where I can even open my diffcase
Hell yeah, very informational
Estupendo como siempre!!
Good info
Dude why is your fuel tank so high up?
My 02 WJ Laredo, 4WD with DANA-44a and Selec-Trac has the fuel tank covering half of the diff. My sway bar is in the way and my clearance is about 2.5-3" to wrench.
I'm getting the pump siphon tool.
Your ZJ videos are awesome, and have helped me a great deal! Questions on this vid: I have the rear DANA 44 LSD, and I've heard you shouldn't use brake cleaner to rinse/clean out your dif if you have an LSD. Any thoughts or advice one way or the other?
Plz I need help my Jeep has the same cover same year but when I go to the auto parts they bring out gaskets that don’t fit, like if the differential doesn’t belong there, by any chance do you have a part number for the gasket. I have looked online for one week with no results there are all different gaskets that won’t fit
Hello Brother
I have our purchased Jeep Liberty KK 2010 model refurbished car.
I want to know which lubricants and which oils are required to be change for smooth functioning of my car?
Can anyone help me out?
Fyi 1996 Venezuelan model came with dana 44 front and rear
So you dont need a gasket, you just need a sealer?
You bad !
outstanding!
If I have a four.0 2 Wheel Dr. and it didn’t come with a tow hitch does that mean I don’t have a tow packages? Dealership is closed I need some answers to change my differential fluid
I was kinda hoping this was a call to arms with a list of names and addresses 😂🤣😂🤣
Hi, very good work.
Thank you
Was 950$ an expensive repair in 2014. 88 Cherokee 4wd ?
