R.C. Sproul: Good Advice or Good News?

  • In many American churches, the Good News of what Jesus Christ has accomplished for us has been replaced with Good Advice about what we can do for God. We have replaced the proclamation of Christ and Him crucified with an easy-listening legalism of "do more and try harder." In this message, Dr. R.C. Sproul explains the crucial difference between the law and the Gospel and why it is absolutely necessary for Christians to know this difference.

Today marks RC's 4th year in Heaven. May God bless His beloved Church by sending us faithful preachers and teachers who will not bow the knee to the world. Who will encourage us to stand and fight the good fight of faith. Let us all glorify God in the life of our departed brother R.C. Sproul. May God bless us all

      Amen. Hallelujah.
Right now our beloved brother RC, His faithful and bold saint, is enjoying himself every moment to the max in our beloved Lord’s Presence. Soli Deo Gloria.
Saint RC’s teachings and preachings are ever so alive and timely for he believed The Truth and he spoke The Truth! Hallelujah.
By Lord’s Great Grace, He led me to watch RC on UA-cam in 2020 during my country covid lockdown. I didn’t know he had already passed on until I saw the video about his funeral. Pastor John MacArthur delivered a very moving eulogy about RC whom he has loved and was so closed to. Even though he didn’t tear, but his sad tone and his sincere words moved me to tears.

Oh how I pray that my Muslim friend's eyes and ears would be opened to this truth. Like Paul told the Greeks, they have such a zeal for righteousness, but they are blind to holiness.
Praise God that His word does not return void. The simple though profound message of the gospel is the power of God unto salvation for all people. Yes, many will walk away with their heads held high or low, but those who have been given ears to hear will run to Christ.
And we as believers need to hear the gospel every day also because we live amongst a people of unclean lips and become contaminated by our surroundings.

The standard of righteousness is GODS own character....and the law being Spiritual and we are Carnal sold into bondage to sin.The law of God is the tutor that drives us to Christ ...for we are unclean and our righteousness is as filthy rags. Thanks to Jesus Christ our Lord who’s righteousness is imputed to us ...through grace by Faith.
R C Sproul amazing servant of God ..how beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those that bring good news..

This message is a lucid presentation of the Good News, expounded by good use of the power/authority of God's word. I now have a new appreciation and love for Mark's account of Jesus' encounter and exchange with the rich young ruler. In past studies, I thought I saw Jesus attempting to reveal to this young man exactly who he was talking to-God incarnate. Something like, "No one but God is good, and here you're calling Me good, so what does that tell you about who I am?" Now, it seems such a sophomoric thought against Dr. Sproul's hermeneutic. And it leaves me pondering why the Spirit did not expound it to me like that. The more I study and listen to more learned men, the more deficient I consider myself to be as a bible teacher, though I've filled that role for more than a decade.

      Hello Sheldon,
I know it is 2 years after your comment. I wanted to write you a note of encouragement here.
I do appreciate your candidness in your reflections as a Bible teacher. I myself as well can relate to the inadequacies that you sense in your teaching that you were honest enough to share. If indeed after 10 years of occupying that position you still feel the Lord has called you and placed you there, then let me remind you of one of our favorite Bible characters. The apostle Peter. What a piece of work he was, as we see him in the narratives. Always it seems ‘missing the mark’ but yet always so sure of himself.
Think about ‘that’ Peter and then go and read his 2 letters to the Church in his later years. It almost seems like 2 different people. He became quite a different man as the years went by. Was not God faithful in raising that man up through the years to master the gift that he had been given? Most of the time it seems that is the way of the Lord. Remember Moses as well? It seems according to our timetable that God does these things very slowly, but yet when He does them, their usefulness remains. I encourage you; Keep serving. Keep studying. Keep giving of yourself to the work. “One man plants, one man waters. But God giveth the increase”
Oh, and by the way - congratulations on your graduation from the freshman class.

The rich young ruler missed out on his calling of true discipleship with Christ. That is why we cannot love the world neither the things that are in the world... we must love Christ more.

If you do not understand the message, listen to it again; and if necessary, again. If you still do not understand, you are compelled to go into Scripture and check Dr. Sproul's statements against Scripture. We are compelled to ask the Holy Spirit to open our understanding as we involve ourselves in a deeper study of God's Word. Be very sure of your "innocence" before Christ before you label someone a blasphemer! Quit such hastiness until after you have been assured by Scripture's tenets that the blasphemer is not you.

    was and is, God?

I like RC, but I think he might be incorrect on this young ruler. The bible says Jesus ‘loved’ him. I reckon that means the guy was as good as anybody could (humanly) be. He had obeyed the teachings of the 10 commandments, and I think his request was sincere. I think Jesus was testing him when he asked why he called him good. He went away unhappy, but maybe he was saved later. Who’s to say?

i like the jokes of RC Sproul but I can't help but poke holes in his teachings. the central point of these 40 minutes, that all humans are utterly incapable of keeping the law, is so packed with presupposition and explicitly flies in the face of the bible
as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to RIGHTEOUSNESS under the law, blameless. phil.3:6
Here, St Paul explicitly teaches he was able to follow the law, without flaw, while he was a pharisee. Many reformed laud this admission as true piety before all Holy God. As most Christians do. Admitting that, though he did it, it doesnt save him. Unwittingly, the reformed have no idea how deadly a blow this is to total inability and the general commands of God all through the scriptures. God commands us all the time to do things and if we can do them, and they can contribute to our salvation, well, faith alone and a litany of other doctrines are mere illusion. Now, since Paul could do it, anyone can. You, me, the rich young ruler. Which throws a revealing light on to the whole parable. He asks Jesus how he can be saved. Jesus asks if he kept the commandments, which is possible since Paul did it. He says yes. Jesus gives him one more task. Which he walks away from. This last point also clearly refutes Calvinism. Jesus gave him a task to be saved that his apostles had done, that he would have to do himself. Jesus didn't give him something absolutely impossible like never have another unclean thought again. Even then, all things are possible through God, so he could've done even that with Gods power. Meaning our own righteousness, created and preserved by God, leads to our salvation. I mean, what would sproul think would happen if things went the other way? imagine this:
The rich young ruler has a profound change of heart, sells his belongings, and marches straight away to Jesus . How will Jesus react?" whoops! actually, everything i told you wasn't about how you get saved even though I said it was. You see, we are writing this thing called the bible and we needed a dramatic, but subtle, story of me softly rebuking a confused young man for literally no reason. and no one will know this except me and people 1500 years from now. Wow, i feel kinda bad."
Lastly, Christ teaches the same thing, abandon your riches and you will be saved, three times. Sproul says the first is Jesus just playing off of the rich young ruler pride. But he walks away, and Jesus says it's the inability of the rich to abandon the world that they will hardly be saved. Then, after all this, the apostles are terrified and ask , since they did all this , what will happen of them? You see, here would be the responsible point where Jesus corrects their misunderstanding that Sproul thinks they're working with. What does He say? Because of their abandonment they will receive great treasures. Here, the entire misunderstanding of Sproul is made clear. Either Jesus is just messing with everyone or He , as repeatedly says, is teaching one must do things to be saved.
