Have you ever seen electrified narrow gauge railway? Roslagsbanan Railway

  • In this video you will see one very rare railway - electrified narrow gauge railway. Why I say rare is for the reason that most of the narrow gauge railways are not electrified as they date back in 19th and beginning of 20th century, when the steam trains were in use. However, there are exceptions and one of them is narrow gauge commuter railway in Stockholm, called Roslagsbanan. Interesting fact is that this railway was electrified since its beginning, which is very unusual. Also, what makes it more impressive is that it runs even today and future looks very bright for this railway, as there are plans for its extension and future development.

    Switzerland have a lot of electrified narrow gauge railways, so does also Japan.

    Japan have both narrow gauge subways and main rail network with narrow gauge.

    Surprised to see this video show up in my feed. I take this very railway very often. One of the stations is like 5 minutes walking distance from my home.

    Brighton, England has an electrified narrow gauge railway using third rail rather than overheads.

    Just a quick tip on "gauge" - It is pronounced the same way as the word "cage", but with a G in the beginning.

    I think countries with a lot of mountain always have narrow gauge.. indonesia is narrow gauge too

    All "cape gauge-railways" are narrower than 1435 mm. Around the globe most britt colonies have cape guage. For instance NZ have cape gauge and runs pretty high speed on it.

    891 is the standard narrow gauge for Sweden, also used on some other railways there.

      @@railgenics Bredsjö-Degerfors Järnväg [de]; 97 km (60 mi), partly closed, partly converted to 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) in 1907.
      Bredsjö-Grängens Järnväg [de]; 15 km (9.3 mi), closed in 1977
      Hällefors-Fredriksbergs Järnvägar [sv]; closed in stages after 1940, finally ceased in 1970
      Striberg-Grängens Järnväg [de]; 28.2 km (17.5 mi), converted to 1,435 mm in 1907
      Vikern-Möckelns Järnväg [de]; 54.5 km (33.9 mi), closed in 1953
      Voxna-Lobonäs Järnväg [de]; 28.86 km (17.93 mi), closed in 1932

      From the beginning of railways in Sweden up til 1950-60's there were a lot of 891 mm railways(= 3 feet swedish measurment, NOT the same as 3 feet brittish measurment).
      There were three large nets of narrow gague railways:
      1) Roslagsbanan is whats left of a net notth-east of Stockholm including Uppsala, Norrtälje, Dannemora and Hargshamn.
      A short part, Uppsala - Länna, remains as a heritage railway.
      2) The connected nets in Östergötland and Småland where it was possible to travel from Örebro via Norrköping to Västervik and further to Växjö and Kalmar.
      The line from Linköping to Motala was electrified.
      Västervik to Hultsfred remains as a heritage railway.
      3) Västgötanätet, connecting Skara, Skövde, Mariestad, Gullspång and other cities to Gothenburg.
      The heritage Anten - Grafsnäs rwy close to Allinsås is the only remain of Västgötanätet.
      Apart from theese nets there was also many stand-alone 891 mm railways, I will point out two.
      1) In Värmland: Nordmark - Klarälvens rwy, owned by Uddeholm Mining Co and like Roslagsbanan electrified.
      2) DONJ, Dala Ockelbo Norrsundet rwy north of Gävle where Jädraås - Tallås rwy near Ockelbo is a heritage railway.

      @@stanclcyoufools6726 Cool, I thought there are some used today as well. As I know, Roslagsbanan is the only active narrow gauge electrified railway in Sweden.
