- Skopje's identity, both it's physicality and it's civic soul, are brought into question.
Film synopsis:
After Skopje's devastating 1963 earthquake, the storyteller’s uncle (a young architect back then) returns to Skopje to help rebuild the city. He enters the team of Kenzo Tange as an apprentice and secretary filled with ambition. However, the architect's high ambitions for a "city of the future" and a "city of solidarity" are let down and force him to create an imaginary model of the city. At the very end, his faith is uncertain as he (the storyteller’s uncle) disappears inside of his soul. Through the uncle’s character, the film depicts the citizens of Skopje, their uncertain future and the mix of emotions they suffer. Kenzo Tange's winning model of the city planning competition for the reconstruction of the central part of Skopje is the central figure in this short documentary. The timeline of the film spans from the 60es to the turn of the 21st century when the model is discovered, crushed and forgotten*. The storyteller decides to write a letter to Kenzo Tange, one that Kenzo will never receive. This concludes the film leaving the viewer in contemplation.
During the research process, the original Kenzo Tange model is discovered by the filmmaker Ivan MIrkovski, totally crushed and abandoned, and saved from total destruction (3/4 of the model was saved, the last 1/4 of the model burnt, as a piece of junk).
A short history of the 1963 Earthquake:
After the Earthquake in 1963 annihilated the central part of Skopje, the rebuilding process set the City on the world map. The United Nations together with the government of Yugoslavia organized a joint relief program that put in motion one of the biggest city-reconstruction processes of all times. 77 Nations from all around the world took part in the rebuilding process setting a new synonym for Skopje: The City of Solidarity. This film is a personal fictional story about a City that lost its physical body and retained only its name Skopje. This story will guide you through the eyes of the young engineer who took part in the reconstruction activities side by side with Kenzo Tange. His tale is full of emotion toward Skopje, a city as it once was and as it should become!
