Wow! I have EVERY album Roy ever recorded and never heard this until just now! I was familiar with Marianne Faithfull's rendition of this John D. Loudermilk classic and just listened to the Nashville Teens version but of course NOBODY touches Roy! I'm in tears!
I thought I had heard all of his work, every song but I never heard this one. Beautiful, like all the others but with such emotion and tenderness. When or did he record this?
Judy, Roy never recorded a studio version of this song and this is his only known performance of the song. This is perhaps new to you because the Stars On Sunday series with which Roy Performed this song had it's tapes wiped for reuse so very few episodes or clips from the show still exist today. For many years Roy's performances were considered lost but in recent years a tape was discovered which contained all three of Roy's appearances.
there's a little bird that somebody sends down to the earth to live on the wind. borne on the wind and he sleeps on the wind this little bird that somebody sends. he's light and fragile and feathered sky blue, so thin and graceful the sun shines through. this little bird who lives on the wind, this little bird that somebody sends. he flies so high up in the sky out of reach of human eye. and the only time that he touches the ground is when that little bird is when that little bird is when that little bird dies.
Stunning voice. Stunning performance
Beautifully sung. I love the setting for this performance.
This actually deserves the word 'rare'
I remember sitting as a child watching this on TV
The True High voice of the Big O in action
Gorgeous voice...like an angel..
Joy he was and Joy he gave..
RIP Roy Orbison...🌿

Until now
there's a little bird that somebody sends
down to the earth to live on the wind.
borne on the wind and he sleeps on the wind
this little bird that somebody sends.
he's light and fragile and feathered sky blue,
so thin and graceful the sun shines through.
this little bird who lives on the wind,
this little bird that somebody sends.
he flies so high up in the sky
out of reach of human eye.
and the only time that he touches the ground
is when that little bird
is when that little bird
is when that little bird dies.
