I think it's important to note that the Nobel Prize for Literature isn't simply given to the best writer. There's a famous clause; it's given to an author who has "produced the most outstanding work in an idealistic direction." I think this is probably the reason he was never given the prize.
From Goodbye Columbus to Sabbath’s Theater he bared his soul. He showed you the window to your soul. I’m incredibly thankful Professor Roth. Thank you.
A man unto himself, with no opinions of others. How beautiful it must be to live life wealthy and unencumbered. Still, his writing was terrific, a great author. I shall miss him.
I was really fascinated by his response to the question about God: "I'm afraid there isn't, no." That can be understood in several ways. I wonder which one he meant (or if he might have meant them all). I can think of at least two people I know who are sure there is no God but really wish there were. It's a very difficult and stoic position to take.
I love his answer about God, no I don't believe in God, show me the evidence crap - just "so you are saying there is no god?", "I'm afraid so, no". A man with nothing to lose will tell you the truth.
The first book I read of his was Portnoy's Complaint and that was back in 1972, have read a few more since and thankfully still have more to discover. I don't know who this Rita Braver is but how insulting of Sunday Morning to send a gossip columnist only interested in fishing out titbits to interview Philip Roth. His annoyance was visible.
@@lancejohnson127 Lance, you don get it. Atheist do not say there is no god. They say there is NO proof. You prove there is a god. You say there is . Show the proof. Actually, squirrel bait, atheism is a lack of belief. Sorry.
Having read some of his books, to each of her questions there was a book he could write, I wonder why he chose to say only a few words. And about the ex wife question, bad color on him to say he "doesn't respond"
God, I love Philip Roth so much. I can't, still can't believe they didn't give him a Nobel...
Antisrmitism, clealy.
He didn't care.

1 page a day. But, damn, what a page. Every page written by this man is a national treasure.
Absolutely! I adore his writing.
A literary titan. R.I.P.
I only just started. Post Mortem. He made a living out of this? Good.

The best writer !!
This woman interviewing him is just terrible. He had amazing patience with her.

Could they choose an interviewer who read at least some of these books? Smh.
A stupid ASSumption.

Dylan was a sparkling interpreter of vignettes but Roth was of a mettalurgically dense writer of tomes

Linda, Rita Braver is not a gossip columnist. She's a journalist who covers national issues, culture, art, science and foreign policy.
Why he hasn't won the Nobel is just disgraceful.
Phillip Beckman Giving him the Nobel would have been disrespectful to him.
Braver comes across as a silly little schoolgirl.
“When the whole world doesn’t believe in God, it’ll be a great place.”
Well said.
On the contrary, that will be the worst thing to happen lol the world will become a Stalin communist state.
I love Phillip. Share same views on god.
atheism is as specious as conventional religion.
Wrong answer penisareus. Atheism is as natural as gravity. Religion is man made to control action and thought.

Eight years later after this interview in 2018, Roth died of heart failure at the age of 85 still not believing in God.
