I’ve always admired this mattelasé effect in jewelry and never realized it’s a combination of carving/sanding plus adding to the peaks with soldering. Really interesting, and I can see why laser is nessecary. How does the laser work, does it meld gold to gold with no flux and solder?
If one were to scale things up alot (think silver bangle) could the method be used without the laser or would it make more sence to forge and hammer the dimension, carve and sand and solder a clean back on? For big dimension I imagine the latter but thinking any in between size would be terribly tricky without the laser and adding solder would spoil the finish…?
I expect alot of this mattelasé style gold these days is all 3d printed or cast to keep the price down and production up, but guessing that inlay is a tell tale sign the work has been hand made entirely.
