  • The LG DualUp was a real surprise. While I needed a second monitor for my desk setup at home, I had no intention of getting a vertical screen at first but after seeing the LG Dual Up online, I was super intrigued and had to buy it.
    In this video I review the monitor, starting with the unboxing, installation and my first impressions after using the monitor for a few days.

    Picked one up awhile back. It's the best investment I've ever made in my desk. I hav it centered with two 4k LG 27 inch monitors, one on each side. I write a lot of technical documentation and it feels more natural than a 16x9 monitor rotated into portrait mode.

    I pair mine with the Ergo Ultrafine 4k 32” and they even though it’s not 4k, I don’t notice a significant difference when using at default resolution. I originally had used it as a single monitor along with the MacBook and while I didn’t hate it, the 21 inch width is just way too small even when rotated. I definitely won’t recommend this as a primary monitor but it’s amazing as a secondary. Writing code on this thing is exceedingly more enjoyable.

      Totally agree that using it as a second monitor is preferred, total game changer in my setup. That being said, I am kind of curious of what it would be like to have two DualUps side by side. 😅
      I think you're right that in default resolution, it looks really sharp, it's just a bit too small for my liking.

    Thank you so much Dan for taking the time to prepare this video. You mentioned that the resolution isn’t as good as 4K. As software developer looking at text is probably most important for me and I was wondering if you can share or show us more in that regard. I’m also interested in learning from you about how well macOS deals with scaling?

    • @DanJacobs
      @DanJacobs  2 роки тому +3

      Hi there, thanks so much for your comment. When the monitor is on the highest resolution the text is very clear, it's just a bit too small for my liking. Depending on what apps you use, you can usually zoom in and make the text bigger which helps a lot, however, the menu bar is still tiny. I think it's just a matter of getting used to but I found a sweet spot that works for me with scaling. The resolution is not as clear as my 4k but honestly, I feel like I only notice it because I have them side by side. If you don't use a 4k monitor, you'd probably not even notice the difference in resolution on the DualUp that much. Should definitely work for coding. 🙌

    For those interested in doing photo editing work on this I can confirm that is great. For starters if you have a colorimeter like SpyderX or i1display, you CAN use the LG Calibration studio software with it. Not quite the same as having a 14-bit look table built in like some monitors from Viewsonic or BenQ, but if you understand how to calibrate correctly you can get outstanding result from this panel. In my case I was able to get 99% sRGB, 90% AdobeRGB, and 93% DCI-P3. Not quite LG claims, but very close. Both portrait and landscape images can be displayed quite large in photoshop. Unlike in a 27" monitor where landscape photos display nice an large but portrait photos seem too small. This "square" monitor gives you plenty of space for both photo orientations. My only complain so far is that thicker bezel at the bottom, they should have made it the same all around so when you rotate it the thicker bezel isn't on the right side. it is ugly but sometimes it creates a better layout for work.

    The 2048 x 2304 isn't as weird as one might think.
    First of all it makes it 110 dpi, just like most ultrawides are. Mine is 4K wide, so you could say that I'm used to a 4K monitor on 110 dpi.
    Secondly it's exactly 2 x 1024 x 768 x 3. And now some of the readers think _1024 x 768_ x 2 x 3. Indeed, that is indeed 6 x XGA, a standard that was introduced by IBM in 1990. It's a whopping six XGA screens in stacked in 2:3. 2048 x 2304: it may sound weird, but is in fact highly logical.

    Sad to see macOS lags behind Windows when it comes to scaling, as this monitor has almost the same exact Pixel Per Inch value as a 32" 4k monitor so you should not be seeing a loss of fidelity.

    • @DanJacobs
      @DanJacobs  2 роки тому

      Oh hey there 😊 I think it could definitely work as a single monitor setup, especially using the picture by picture mode, as long as you're not precious about the individual screen size. It's basically 2 x 21.5" monitors stacked on top of each other so if 21.5" is enough, that works for sure. Invitation is open to visit us over here soon and you can check it out. 🙌

    This monitor has crossed my mind, but I've stopped myself sense I've been trying to not spend as I have accumulated 4 monitors over the year trying to find the right setup. That said, I do like the aspect ratio. My only issue with the setup and this is my OCD, is the wide screen and the height. I have a 22-inch which I turned to be horizontal and a paired it with a 32-in, which closely matches the heights. With you're current setup my eye tends to twitch seeing that dual screen be far taller than you wide screen. I know that space and comfort plays a big roll. But maybe a 40ish-in screen would closely match that height. Idk 🤷🏽‍♂️
