  • Belgian National Day, known as "Fête nationale belge" in French, is a significant holiday in Belgium. It is celebrated annually on July 21st. This day commemorates the event in 1831 when Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians, ascended to the throne. His ascension marked the beginning of the independent state of Belgium under a constitutional monarchy and parliament.
The day is filled with various activities and celebrations across the country. In the capital city of Brussels, the festivities often start with a Te Deum service at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. This is followed by a military parade in the presence of the King and Queen, which takes place in the afternoon on the Place des Palais.
The Belgian Air Force also performs a flyover, and there are various police and civil defense demonstrations. The day is typically concluded with a large display of fireworks.
In addition to these official celebrations, there are also a variety of popular festivities, including concerts, street performances, parties, and communal meals in neighborhoods. It's a day of unity and pride for the Belgian people, celebrating their history, culture, and independence.
