  • Full playthrough of R-Type, released in 1988 for the NEC PC Engine/Turbo Grafx. Originally released in the arcade in 1987, R-Type was ported to 11 home consoles and computers of the time by many different developers, with Hudson Soft's PC engine release being widely considered the most faithful iteration.
While this is the first time I have played the PC Engine port of R-type, I am far from a n00b, playing this game to death back in the 80's on the Sega Master System and when occasionally finding it in the wild in the arcades. While I will always love the Master System version, an excellent port for 8-bit hardware, I was blown away at how faithful Hudson Softs effort is.
Overall, R-Type, while short, is a very fun game. It is one of those perfect "pick up and play" titles well worth go with it being re-released on many modern platforms. Just to add further confusion, this is the Japanese release of the game which was split into two titles, part I and II, whereas the Turbo Grafx release had the whole game on one HuCard. Part II will be published soon.
I haven't uploaded in the last few weeks as I have been working on getting my PC Engine up and running. I bought a Core Grafx, and a DUO, both needing heavy restoration work done to them. After recapping, changing the laser on the DUO and designing a RGB mod for both consoles, everything is running great and outputting a beautiful picture. The PC Engine is a console we never got in the UK so this is the first time I have touched one, and I must say, it's a great platform. I wanted to play something familiar for my first video using it, but I will be doing many more playthroughs on this little gem.

******* Notes on this Video *******
This playthrough was captured on a NEC PC Engine Core Grafx. I have modded the console with a RGB mod of my own design as the PC Engine only natively outputs composite video. I haven't published my RGB mod anywhere, but I'm happy to sent the Gerber files to anyone on request.
The gameplay was upscaled with the RetroTink 4K, recorded in 4K using the M.2 Avermedia 4K Live Gamer capture card, both great bits of equipment, highly recommended to any retro gaming enthusiasts.
I upload these playthroughs, mainly for real hardware footage preservation, which is why I use no watermarks or overlays and record the footage in integer scaled 4:3. Feel free to use it as you wish, all I ask, is you don't just reupload it in full. Credit to my main channel would be greatly appreciated, but not required. UA-cam, obviously bit-crushes video and audio while compressing, so if you want the raw footage of this video, contact me.

This is the first time I have touched a PC Engine as it had no UK release. I really love this tiny console so far and would like to get suggestions from you on what games I should play on it.
