He makes it look so easy. As I’ve struggled in the warm comfort of my home, I can’t imagine that battle weary GI far from home, and in the cold wet Bastogne forests, reassembling a rifle. Thankfully we had the Greatest Generation and not me.

at 3:15 the bolt isn't locked all the way back and is resting on the follower slide like a mousetrap ready to snap... a good recipe for Garand thumb for the uninitiated. Just for the info of the viewers. Whenever you retract the bolt/op rod on an M1, it's important to do it smartly and fully.

My only real crisis moment was in getting the op rod spring assembly back in there! Wow is that under a lot of tension. To try and hold it properly, with the oil on it, and slide the hooks into place was a real challenge. But, finally got it. I am mechanically disinclined and you talked me through it!!

Definitely will consult this again. Just bought a Garand in very good condition. Didn’t take out the bolt guide and catch. Just partially stripped it and oiled it up. Will come back when I need a full field strip.

Thanks very much, but isn’t their a clip that holds the hand guard in place, and a special tool needed to remove it? Did you remove the clip in part 1 and reinstall it here and not show it? Or does that not need to be taken off? Sorry if this is obvious snd I missed it. Great video otherwise, and I think I have enough here to finally strip my Garand without being paranoid I’ll ruin it. ;-)

Just a thought, I clean my Garand after i use it about 3 or 4 times a yr. 150 to 200 rounds per yr. I take it down 1 time per yr for grease and inspection any more than that and things can loosen up and cause problems. U stretch a rubber band too much it loses it tension get the drofy

At 3:13 the bolt is not locked all the way back. Mine is doing the same thing after my first field strip and reassembly. Is there a reason why it is doing this? I did not have this issue before I disassembled my Garand. Thanks.
Note that at the final step the bolt was not pulled back all the way. The bolt was simply resting on the rear of the follow assembly. This is the primary cause of our "M1 Thumb". The bolt will slam forward unexpectedly (unloaded) unless you pulled the operating rod that last 1/2" to the rear locked position. I maintain 9 M1's for Yuma, Az American Legion Post 19 and have had a number of stoppages that I believe are related to excessive restriction in that last 1/2" of travel. Do you or anyone know of any possible cause? (Other than lube)
s a new Garand owner, and lLiving in the Southern Arizona desert, is it still advisable to grease the M1. As they found out in North Africa, lubrication+sand is not good.
Pls help. After I followed all the steps in the videos my gun is feeling some resistance when racking it. The first few inches is when it is having the resistance than once it’s fully open and cocked it racks smooth. Once I pull the trigger and dry fire it it does the same thing again. Some metal on metal resistance it is having. Lmk if I need to explain myself better. Thanks
Putting that spring back in on my M1 is probably the worst part of this rifle. Everything about this rifle is very straight forward but putting the spring back in. I've had that stupid thing fly ten feet across the room five times in a row because my hands were covered in oil and I couldn't grip it. In the end, I just laugh. I still love this gun though and will never get rid of it.
I thought the spring in the Garand was bad until I put a brand new op rod spring in my M1 Carbine. Thing was so stiff that I slipped trying to get the end of the guide rod into the op rod, the guide rod shot out, went through a wooden closet door, ended up at the back of the closet where I found it about an hour later. Lol
i have a tanker in 30-06. the video was still perfectly accurate. I did have to stop and rewind it many times. BTW, anybody know if I can use modern commercial 30-06 ammo or is it too hot? running out of the old stuff....
No I wouldn’t use standard ammo. M1 ammo is hard to find now. Ordered 500 rounds 4 months ago and can’t find anymore. M1 ammunition has lower gas pressure.
Ok this is now twice i have struggled to put the trigger group back in. There is something missing from this video. It doesn't just slide right in like that.
@@CoelhoSports you need to angle it in some way, dont force it in. It should pop right in.. The floor plate in front of the trigger touches the wood first. In front of your trigger group you should see a tiny metal rod sticking out forward and the turns 90 degrees, right on the side of that youll see two small circular protrusions(one on each side).. Thats what stops you from just popping it in, you have to angle that somewhat into the stock. If you look down at the stock you should see some metal on the sides thats kind of hooded. Those circular parts on the trigger assembly has to get under that metal part in the sides of the stock. I hope this helps bro. You’re right tho, in the video he just drops it right in and the video is pretty fast paced and i think they should slow it down. After doing many times it gets easier.
I know I'm late to the party, but you can slow down the video using the gear icon in the lower right of the video to either 75%, 50%, or 25% of normal speed. Plus, you know...there's the pause button... ;)
I'll bet you didn't even clean the piston face. You should have lubed the follower assembly where it rides in the slots of the receiver. Those parts rub against each other. USMC - '69 - '73; Vietnam - '71 - '72.

3:13 Ensure when locking the action to the rear it goes all the way back, not hanging up on the follower as it looks here. Watch those thumbs!
