    "The Green Room"... light bulb moment right there! Is that why we call the waiting area for guests/celebs in television studios just that..? Only they are waiting to get on a sofa or stage - not to have an audience with the King!

    I believe the Oval Office was actually moved to the West Wing from the main residence building during one of the refurbishments during the twentieth century but it was never where most people think it is - i.e. never in that central room on the south side above the south colonnade. If I am not mistaken, it was oval on the inside but had flat rather than curved walls on the outside and was originally located at the south west corner of the residence building.

    On your ;points about previous Royal Standards (beginning with the later Plantagenet Kings of England from Edward III onwards) that included the contemporaneous emblem of France's monarchs (Gold Fleur De Lis on a blue backgound) as well as their own emblem (Three Golden Lions 'passant' on a red background). Just one small correction. It did not signify that the English Kings were claiming "lands in France." It actually meant that they were claiming FRANCE itself. IE; saying that THEY were the rightful Kings of France as well as of England. It's what the Hundred Years War was about.

    no clue where abouts in buckingam palace it was but I went on a course where we had special access to certain parts of buckingham palace, what is interesting is wherever we were somewhere on the ground floor it looks like a normal hotel being in construction, then you go up these stairs and your suddenly in a posh looking hall way. There is also a large cafateria which is for staff who get free meal, I think they were free anyway, can't quite remember. The food is nice but not fancy or anything like that.
    During the course we also were trapped inside a room for a couple of hours at some point due to a terroist attack that happened on london bridge, which was quite scary at the time as we weren't told why we'd gone into lockdown and were just told to stay in this big room, with a lot of staff who were also told to stay there.

Located on the second floor, the room acquired its current name after hosting royalty like Queen Elizabeth ll of Great Britain, Queen Sofia of Spain, and Queen Sonja of Norway."

    Regarding the first floor ground floor thing. 100% of the houses in my neighborhood have the main floor of the house at least one step above the ground with a basement beneath, so the main floor of my house really isnt at ground level. The basement is at ground level.

    • @2eleven48
      @2eleven48 Рік тому +1

      There is a difference between ground level and ground floor. There are indeed steps leading to the house in some areas, but no-one would regard the cellar as the ground floor, whatever its appearance at ground level.

    I'm curious if King Charles will continue to live in Clarence House as before (part of St. James Palace) and will just use Buckingham Palace for work and representation. Most european monarchs don't live in their "official" city palaces anymore but in more remote or (relatively speaking) modest residences and only use the former for matters of official duty.

    • @2eleven48
      @2eleven48 Рік тому

      Quite. Reports are that Charles is disinclined to live permanently at BP, and wishes to see more tourism and business venues operating there in order to bring in revenue towards the upkeep of the place. It's a monument, not an enduring living space anymore.

    The video on Buckinham Palace is remarkably accurate. In fact I'm amazed at how accurate it is.
    The only bit I'd change that I actually know is that at 2:28 the Queen's (now King's) Apartments are actually really only around the circular bit in the middle of that side of the palace. The rest are just offices.
    The second bit is that the swimming pool is actually the small rectangular building with the columns on the bottom right at 6:00.

    • @MrBulky992
      @MrBulky992 Рік тому

      @@stewartmackay Queen Elizabeth I was not the last queen of England.
      That honour went to Queen Anne who, in 1707, following the Acts of Union passed by the parliaments of England and Scotland (which dissolved the separate kingdoms of England and Scotland and created the Kingdom of Great Britain) ceased to be Queen of England and Queen of Scots and, instead, became Queen of Great Britain. That was 315 years ago.
      The personal union (of the crowns) of 1603 had no effect on England and Scotland's status as separate sovereign nation states. Hence, King James was VI and I and his successor after 1685 was James VII and II, of Scotland and England respectively.

    Buckingham Palace. A place where it was decorated by taxpayers money. Stage Coaches paid for by taxpayers, and then the royals have the Gaul to charge people for a tour of the palace.
    Over the centuries the royals have had enough money from taxpayers, so I think it only right to have free admission.

    • @2eleven48
      @2eleven48 Рік тому

      Very amusing in your use of 'Gaul' (a native or inhabitant of ancient Gaul, not necessarily French). The word you mean is 'gall'.
      Bottom-line, you either support through taxation and a sense of the worthiness of the role of the Royal Family, or you do not. Quite a few people, apparently, are keen for Britain to become a republic, especially after the death of QE2. Maybe that will happen, but I'd say not to hold your breath. Keep well. Robert, UK.
