My advice to anyone looking at a Lowes/Home Depot john deere: skip it and go straight to the dealer and get a X350 (or other x series mower). Much higher quality, and you dont have to deal with a junk briggs engine.

Great job on your reviews. After watching your snow blower review I went out and bought a X390. It's not here yet, the dealer I bought it from said that the snow blower would be in stock the first week of October. I totally wanted to get a machine with a locking differential, but as you said, it was a lot more money. I'm nervous and excited all at the same time, my driveway is on an incline. Again, great job, stay safe!

I've got almost 200 hours on my x350 and it has worked really well for me. The two problems I've run unto were a defective front left wheel that wouldn't seal to the tire leading to slow leak. The other is traction/suspension. When you are on uneven surfaces this thing teeter totters back and forth on two wheels because it doesn't have any articulation in the rear. once you get a wheel in the air it just sends all power to that wheel. Also, It's real wet and hilly where I live so a real suspension and some more aggressive rear tires would have been nice. It's clear that this mower is intended for a perfectly flat and smooth lawn which I don't have. My lawn is rough as hell and after a few hours of mowing I feel like I got hit by truck.

I have the X390 series with 4 wheel power steering. My lawn is hilly with lots of trees. The 4 wheel steering really helps with traction on the hills. I tried the 350 you have but I lost traction a lot on the hills with the 48" deck. The power steering helps because the non-power 4 wheel steer is like parking a 1950 Buick. Here in the US, Deere only offers a diff lock in the 500 series and up.

My 2007 X300 actually needed two extra 50 pound weights in the back for snowblowing to help with traction. Big difference!! (My two 50 pound weights I believe were actually old go kart weights I adapted for the X300". The 44" snowblower is VERY aggressive and as you say, watch the speed with heavier / wet snow..I've buried the snowblower in very tall drifts and it kept on working.

After tooling it around the dealer's lot a bit, I totally agree with your observations. I can't wait to get on it. I'm down here in the Smoky Mountains northeastern Tennessee and I'm thinking I can get along without it but it would definitely be a plus if I had a locking differential. However like you pointed out the additional money you have to step up and pay for the next series up kind of makes that an impossibility for me right now. At any rate thanks again for a fantastic video stay well!

I know this is an old thread, but for anyone owning an X300/X500 series John Deere mower with a Kawasaki engine. These engines are known to puff out a bit of smoke at startup. This is a normal issue with these engines. A trick I learned, is to give it around 1/2 throttle, turn the key, and when the engine is turning over, give it a quick bump of the choke. This solved my problem of smoking on startup. By the way, welcome to the wonderful world of Deere ownership, and great video!

I like this tractor. It is probably the current version of the tractor I have now which is a 1997 John Deere 325 with 2,000 hours (that's how long the Kawasaki engines last). The one advantage mine seems to have is that the mower deck (and plow blade and snowblower) is lifted and lowered by hydraulics. I lift and lower any accessory (literally) with my pinky. I think I would miss that...but this is on the list as the 325 won't last forever.

In my youth I blew a heck of a lot of snow on a John Deere 300. We used chains for sure summer and winter on our rolling 10 acre property and about 125 lbs of concrete molded into a wire milk crate on the back. Never got stuck and our driveway was about 450' long and no diff lock either. Oh by the way that JD was a 1972 and has been in use every year since. My older brother inherited it and used it up to last year when he sold it to another guy who will no doubt enjoy it. I wouldn't worry too much about the length of the warranty on these tractors.

I bought two JD X380 48" tractors this past summer. One is at my primary house, one at another house. My lawn is a half acre of hills, lots of obstacles to cut around. The other lawn is just under two acres of basically flat lawn with a steep slope way in the back of the yard. I mow both lawns myself. I love the tractors, they are tough, built strong, drive easy and are comfortable for a long job. My lawn takes about 45 minutes, the larger lawn a little more than an hour, there aren't too many obstructions in that lawn. I put a mulch kit on both mower decks which work very well and were easy to install. I also bought a mower jack from Home Depot which makes working under the tractor a pleasure. I'm 65 with bad knees and one bad shoulder, so it was worth it for me to buy a jack. I tow a beefy garden wagon with the tractors for yard work, carrying dirt, mulch, garden tools wood, etc. It makes any job easier. These are my first garden tractors, I was a city guy till I retired, now I am out in the country. The one thing I don't like about these tractors is that yellow button you have to push to mow in reverse. I always forget and the deck cuts off as soon as I touch the reverse pedal. That is really annoying when you have to mow back and forth around an obstruction. I enjoyed your videos about your X350, best of luck with it long term.

Yes, I know that. However, sometimes when making speed adjustments in reverse, I let off too much and the deck cuts off when I push the reverse pedal down again. when going in reverse it is best to lift up the pto button before hitting reverse petal so the pto stays engaged. This does 2 things. Saves the belt from the slipping it does everytime the pto starts spinning and saves wear and tear on your PTO clutch. Best thing to do, if you are up to removing some of the stupid safety's is to wire the pto switch so it thinks you are lifting it up all the time. That way in reverse you dont have to lift up the button. Tractor still works the same, going forward and backward. There are videos out there with how to do this. And you really do not need the locking diff. Your driveway is as flat as your lawn.

So I’m mildly confused about the value proposition of the X350... I have an E140 that MSRPs at 2/3s of the cost(and I actually paid 1/2 the cost of an X350). The deck is 48”, it supports the snow blower just fine, and is even a higher HP rating... I lack cruise control, but that’s about it in terms of features. Where is the extra $1200USD coming from for an X350?

I can not speak about the x350. But I had a x320 that the x380 replaced. It was bullet proof. I had it ten years 1200hrs and sold to a guy that wore out a D140 and D155 in 8 years. He did not got less than 1000hrs out of both of them. He ran my x320 last year with no problems. I bought a used x500 with 400hrs ran it last summer no problems. John Deere should say pay me now or pay me later.

I know you like the foot pedals but I grew up on a Deere 285 with the hydrostatic lever to the right of the seat. SO MUCH BETTER. Easier to modulate, no need for a cruise control button since it stays where you leave it, etc.
I would HATE having to reactivate the clutch every time I move forward. When I was cutting grass at my grandmother's house (Home Depot grade Deere) I modified the switch after it was out of warranty so it kept the blades engaged in reverse. All because some people couldn't be bothered to turn and look before reversing and hurt other people/children.
Give it a couple years, you'll end up with a zero turn once Roman digs deep and gives you the raise you deserve. My parents' lawn took 3 hours with the 285, now with the Husqvarna 60" zero turn it takes just over an hour.

My mother had an x300 and I know that rack and pinion steering you will grow to hate. The arms bend very easily and the steering will get sloppier than a 60 year old moose knuckle. About 100-150hrs your grass lines will look like you had BAC of 1.0. You live and learn. I Have a 955 with a 72” tricycler deck for my 3 acres and man that thing is a Cadillac for being 30 yrs old.

    • @hamiltoncouple01
      @hamiltoncouple01 4 роки тому +2

I agree. When I had my John Deere, it wasn’t too long before things got sloppy. My biggest beef was how uncomfortable the sitting/operating position is. It took me well into 3.5 hrs to do my yard. After switching to Zero Turn, I shaved off almost 2 hours! Not to mention Zero Turn has incredibly comfortable seat and operating position. And quality of grass cutting is same if not better with Zero Turn using 60” deck.

Two negative points about John DEERE equipment are the quality of the plastics (covers) which are very fragile throughout the range and too heavy on the 300 series. On the other hand, the quality of the plastic seats is a disgrace for this brand as they crack very quickly.

I don't doubt that. I chose a lawn tractor because (1) it was already faster than the 21" push mower I had been using, and (2) for future utility (i.e. pulling a dethacher, or cart, or using a snow blade/snowblower).
