    I was not aware that the EU has more than a little influence globally. But it makes some sense.
    It is very tedious and slow to create a new regulation in the EU. It needs to be democratically accepted by 27 states with different cultures and preferences. That means that we force ourselves to really think it through. The result is that it is very slow, but results in high quality of regulations.
    We do that to find common rules under 27 different states, with 24 languages. I do not think that anybody thinks about global influences when discussing with his 26 partners.
    So, we produce good consumer-friendly regulations, just as we produce good cars.
    And we feel honored if the regulations are used elsewhere. I think her description is very accurate. We do not want to enforce our rules elsewhere. And it is very hard to influence our rules from the outside. Do not forget that we found a democratic decision with 27 participating states. If you want to influence something from the outside, you have to convince 27 independent parties first. Good luck with that. It's not about protection from the outside, it is as hard for us. The main difference is: we are used to it.

      Yeah yeah high quality regulation like that one about the maximum curvature of cucumbers, remember that one? LOL

    • @vsiegel
      @vsiegel 3 роки тому +21

      @@Vasileski88 I do, you mean 1677/88 / EEC for sure. But it is not about the maximum curvature of cucumbers! It defines quality classes.
      It is about the cucumber curvature maximum in a quality class. The maximum is related to the quality class, not the cucumber. What happens at the maximum is a change in quality class, nothing happens to the cucumber.
      For example, if you order a box of cucumbers of class 1 quality, you can expect they are straight enough to stack them. If you order cucumbers of class 3, you get some less straight cucumbers, maybe semicircles and spiral shaped.
      So the cucumbers do not have any maximum curvature. It means that you can order cucumbers that are straight enough for use with your slicing machine. Here, it is a maximum of the machine, not of the cucumbers. Any cucumber no matter what shape is a perfect EU cucumber. There is nothing special about the cucumbers, it is about what a customer can order. If you want to order straight cucumbers, everybody in the EU knows what that means, how straight it needs to be.
      You can write that as
      "It is about the maximum curvature of cucumbers in a class."
      I see that it is not easy to distinguish. I see it as the job of a journalist to make sure it is not misunderstood.

      Do know that a lot of the regulations she is talking about are about market regulations. And most of those are passed through qualified majority voting, so not every member state has to vote in favor of the regulation. And decisions made through qualified majority voting are a lot faster

    • @arthurw13
      @arthurw13 2 роки тому +9

      @@Roman-po8yc I think you misinterpret the idea behind the Brussels effect. Most countries in the world fight regulation so they can have a competitive advantage when producing goods compared to other countries. In can mean that they keep environmental regulations down or consumer safety regulations down. In practice this means that most countries are trapped in a race to the bottom regarding regulations which ofcourse is very bad if you care about the planet or consumer safety. The EU has simply found a way to curb this trend and change it into a race to the top instead of a race to the bottom. By regulating global markets they can dictate how products are being made which means they can enforce environmental regulation or consumer safety which means its better for the planet and better for the consumer. Since the EU is the only entity who actually makes this possible at the moment you should indeed feel grateful about the EU.

      @Dirk Bogade I believe the only State becoming democratic in occupation and due to an armed conflict _ever_ was Germany; and they only reverted to a better Version of what they had before the fascists took power. Go ahead, name a single other State where democracy was the direct result of armed conflict, and not of internal uprising or deliberate transformation by the ruling class. Which is btw also what will likely happen in Russia: Ukraine won't make Russia a democracy, which is what you alluded to in your comment. Egypt didn't become a democracy after Israel won a war against them.
      Furthermore, stating Israel as an exemplary democracy is short-sighted, considering the oppression many of the non-jewish people there face.

      Of course they do, and that's the Crux of the matter; the thing is that most of the time, Markets that are solely regulated by themselves are _terrible_ for everyone but those directly earning the big money. That's why one must differentiate between internal and external regulation in regards to a market. Leaving a market only to internally regulate, means it's only oriented towards making the most money and in a quick way. Only external regulation can prevent the degradation of values and the distancing from pure greed. Exactly because it is _not_ in the interests of the companies involved.

    I would disagree with Dr. Bradford on Brexit as well as the statements she made sound clearly political. British companies will take the niches of the local and international markets that the EU companies do not because of the overregulated EU environment. This will make the set up of any new locally and internationally trading businesses much easier, will significantly bolster the local and international economic competition and will significantly diversify the UK economy. The main point is that the UK decided to set their own regulatory environment, whether the EU compliant or not, EU compliance would be the choice of the individual corporations, but the UK economic advantage is that now they have both choices at hand.

       @Les Ward The won't be an independent Scotland, not for as long as there in a Monarchy in the UK. If the UK Monarchy fails, the whole of the former British Empire would fail and will be a big global mess. Without it, the US won't stand to China and Russia and won't control the global trade and finance. It is very unlikely HM will make the move, not given the numbers of UK and UK-linked citizens of AU, NZ and CAN. Moreover, the EU suffers huge ideological losses on the Eastern Front, in the Baltic States, where illegals are beaten up and thrown over the border on the other side, once they dare to cross into the EU. This is not counting the anti-EU revolt in Poland, Hungary and the rest of the Eastern Block, even under threat of sanctions. To put it simple, the issue is not Britain or its Monarchy, the issue is the "prey of the cultures of Europe in their entirety" that the EU aimed to change and replace with multicultural societies, something it would never swallow and digest. This is why it is breaking up. The only way is another European War or mass anti-government and anti-EU revolts in Eastern Europe. EU enemies know this EU geopolitical vulnerability very well and are actively exploiting it in numerous hybrid warfare attacks, like the ones in Latvia and Lithuania at the moment. It's a dead project. Even if Scotland breaks up from the UK some time in the future, looking at how it goes, there simply won't be anything for the UK to rejoin.

      @@Mr.L007 Brexit has actually made the break up of the UK far less likely. Let's say that Scotland voted to leave the UK whilst the UK was inside the EU Single market and customs union. This would cause very little disruption to the Scottish economy because the UK, and an independent Scotland, would both exist inside the SM/CU. Though once the UK has left the EU SM/CU it would have a dramatic impact on the Scottish economy. This is due to the Scottish economy being far more integrated inside the UK single market and customs union.
      Remember, the UK SM/CU is over 300 years old, and covers far more of the economy than does the EU SM/CU, e.g. services. 65% of Scottish trade is within the UK SM/CU compared to 12% for the EU SM/CU. Interesting fact, Scotland trades more with the RoW than it does the EU.
      Support for independence is falling. Factor in a hard border with England it is likely to fall further. Moreover, the phrasing of the question itself is important to the reality. Asking anyone if their country should be independent is somewhat of a leading question. I'm surprised they got away with it last time. Would they have let the Brexit referendum be decided on such a question? Not in a million years. Alternatively, when Scots are asked whether their country should leave the Unite Kingdom, the answer is a resounding no. Interesting that.

    Unfortunately, having completed a Master's Degree Mrs. Bradford is forgetting that the current and historically established cultural (meaning ethnic, religious and customary) environment is the singe most important factor in the economic success of every nation on the globe. Any society will only advance when it has the freedom and the social consensus and cohesion to do so together as a society. Arguing about populism Mrs. Bradford states that the populist and euro-sceptic parties do not care about consumers, climate and cost. However the fact is that they do, to a much greater extent that the EU as a superstate does. Many think that racism is the reason for the anti-immigration sentiment, it is not. The reason for the anti-immigration sentiment is purely economic, heavily backed by the social cohesion and social security concerns. There is no point in trying to make someone to play by your rules if they not only don't understand them, but also that they heavily object to accepting them as a society, and at the same time expect them to perform their best commercially, even out of European unification thoughts. This is economic nonsense to expect Poland or Hungary to rapidly change their cultural environment and think that this would benefit their society and their economic performance. Hence, I do not accept that euro-scepticism and populism are bad for the EU, they are the single most valuable argument we have ever had in the European Union.

      I am from Poland, and most polish people want to stay in Europe, and half of Polish people want to integrate more, (only 18 % are against) and the parties which criticize Brussels are doing it just for looks. I do not agree that people are not welcoming to immigrants just because of the economics reasons, cultural has the same, and I believe that especially in Poland MORE factor, because immigrants in Poland have high employment rate according to Eurostat. The parties in my country that are euro-sceptics often do not belive in consumers rights, and human rights so they do not want good servies for people just money.

      It seems to me you do not know exactely what populism means, nor scepticism. If what you say is right, the UK should say: "Well, we know that Brexit has forced quite a lot of small and medium firms to shut down (source: Daily Telegraph and all other newspapers), that the fishing industry is worse off than before (same source), our shores are infested by shit and piss since nobody can prevent polluters to do so (source: same as above), vegetables are rotting in the fields, pigs had to be culled for shortage of abbottoir workers, yet, my God, the freedom fo be able to choose all this, as opposed to someone forcing me to live a better life, has no price. Instead you Brexiteers go on about the French making life difficult at Dover, the EU pretending goods checks and sanitary declarations and so on. Why do not you rejoice? But you main problem with you is the vague idea you have of Populism. try and be more specific.

      They have been saying this since 1957. In the meantime other countries find it difficult to keep a PM in power for longer than 6 months. Strenght and stability. What Went Wrong outside the EU?
