    Sounds like Peter's bitterness is a contagion. Ed's view of Peter is pretty bleak & a bit bitter. It's like Peter is some kind of unhappiness napalm. Get anywhere near the guy & his cloud of misery will swallow you up. Did Ed say he worked with Peter for a decade(93-03)? I can't imagine working that closely for that long with someone so miserable. The "Don't play my drums." comment is over the top mental & sadly funny all at the same time. It's like telling the valet not to drive your car.

    forget the contracts, after Peter and Ace left the band new kiss albums didn't sell as well, the multi-million dollar merchandising machine dried up, and record breaking ticket sales were a thing of the past, even having to play clubs in some markets.
    I think it's obvious that Ed's a little confused about the band doing better business in the 80's, he must be thinking of Aerosmith, the band "that comes out and does the music".

  • @johnjones1919
    @johnjones1919 11 років тому +2

    Ed is incorrect here. Kiss may have been bigger than either of Peter or Ace's solo careers but after Peter and Ace left, the band was NEVER bigger than they were in their 70's heyday, until the reunion. I have no problem with Ed's opinions but let's not make up stuff and throw it out there as fact. And I would hardly describe the tenure of the original band from 74-79 or the music they created as an "infantile stage" of the band's history.

    One question: why do fans treat this loke the JFK conspiracy? Ed was introduced by Paul at the beginning of the show, he told the audience Peter was sick and Ed was filling in, Ed even stood up to take a bow after the introduction. There have been pictures and video of it all over the internet for years. Why this huge expression of shock by people? Leaves me scratching myvhead.

    Just read this posted on a forum: "Mike Brandvold, he used to run KISSOnline when it first started. Some guy posted a joke about KISS on their official forums and Brandvold reported him to his ISP, the FBI got involved and showed up at his work, and the guy ended up losing his job because of it."
    Is this true?

    As a longstanding fan from the UK, I love this stuff. Makes one feel a bit saddened though and reminds me of something my Mum used to say "you should never meet your heroes" I loved PC as a kid and started playing drums as a result, I love his early style - quite loose and unique - 100,000 years, Deuce, Parasite, Strangeways, She, DRC, GoT, Shock me, Larger than life etc... That's what I want to remember.

    Not sure anyone cares about proving you wrong. This isn't a challenge. I completely agree that the other make mistakes... Gene more so than Paul. Gene and Paul weren't the topic of this episode... it was Peter.

  • @johnjones1919
    @johnjones1919 11 років тому +2

    You'd be completely wrong. By 1980, original Kiss had one of the most lucrative recording contracts in the music industry. They could command a 2 million dollar advance per album. By 1988, Kiss was releasing demos with drum machines on self-produced albums because the budgets were smaller due to Kiss no longer being as big as they were in the 1970's. Ed is wrong when he says Kiss "got bigger" after the originals parted ways.

    Few things: Not the first time I heard Joey Kramer from Aerosmith was a dick. It always amazes me that Ace and Peter, after being handed GOLDEN TICKETS could proceed to screw it up again! It’s like that story Dr. Heideggers experiment” people will make the same mistakes over and over. Crazy.

    I am not out to make any group of fans happy. I am just expressing my opinion, you can like it or not. I honestly don't care if a group of fans will stand for it. It is all just opinion, and you are free to stop listening if you don't agree.

    As a fan since the first album i don't like it. That's why my last concert was in 2000. It's not them it's what they are wearing. Sad thing is a lot of people don't know the difference. They think they are still seeing Kiss. I think you were a fan in the 70's. We didn't call them Catman Spaceman and so on. They were Gene Simmons,Peter Criss, Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley. Kiss. They weren't characters like they are now. The interview with Kanon was interesting.

  • @johnjones1919
    @johnjones1919 11 років тому +1

    You don`t agree that during the 80's Kiss took a nose-dive after Peter and Ace left? It was the main reason for removing the make-up in 1983, the business model didn't work anymore, and nothing they tried prior to the reunion in 1996 ever achieved the level of success enjoyed by the originals in the 1970's. Let's try to stick to the facts.

  • @johnjones1919
    @johnjones1919 11 років тому +1

    I didn't say or suggest anything about post-original Kiss being "fake"., I merely pointed out the fallacy in Ed's suggestion that post-original Kiss was doing "bigger" business than original Kiss, it`s simply not true and any reasonably educated Kiss fan knows this.

    I think Tommy and Eric are fine musicians, but are in the unfortunate spot of not being able to be themselves completely. They are asked to emulate the looks, sounds, and playing traits of their predecessors. It would benefit themselves, KISS, and the fans (both those who love and hate them as they currently are) if they were simply allowed to wear their own unique character makeups/costumes and play in their own unique styles. It would not harm the band and would be exciting to see happen.

    I have a few questions for Ed:
    1) Did he sing Beth?
    2) Did he actually also sing bvs that night?
    3) How much did they pay him? Was it normal crew wages, or did they bump his pay up to Peter's salary for that night only?
    4) Notwithstanding Doc McGhee's remark about: "You're gonna look pretty stupid tearing down the drums in that makeup," who DID strike the drums that night? Did he do double duty as the tech after the show?
    5) Did he do an actual drum solo? (besides the breakdown in 100,000 Years)

    So, finally got up to the tour bus door and handed the guy an autographed (which had Paul, Gene, Ace's autograph's on it) Destroyer album with a vintage Destroyer sticker inside. When the record was returned the vinyl was broken in half, the sticker was gone and he signed right over one of the autograph's. Also, a guy handed a 5 dollar bill to get signed...they didn't return to him. Peter was a total jerk.

    I don't agree. People only care about the characters now. A new character will mean nothing. People going to the show are going to see a demon, a spaceman and catman and a starchild. The person under the makeup no longer matters.

    Peter Criss story for all of you: went to see Peter Criss play at The Strand in Providence, RI in 1994. It cost 5 dollars and it was half full. Anyways, after the show about ten of us waited outside in December cold by his tour bus to get autographs. Hos manager told us to wait. We waited TWO HOURS! Then, he wouldn't even come out. He had each person come up to the tour bus door and hand whatever the wanted signed to the guy at the door and he would bring it back to Peter.

    What Peter Criss brought to KISS was creative artistic aspect making not so much a technical aspect. It seems Paul and Gene sort of embraced a technical aspect to the music they created for KISS rather than embrace a raw punk sensibility to their music which was the way early KISS operated.

    Although I don't begrudge Tommy Thayer or Eric Singer, KISS unlike say - Foreigner, is a uniquely idealized concept. Much as it would be true of the Beatles without all four original members it just isn't the same. It's a rare and precious thing that sadly is dismissed with cynical contempt. What was once KISS is now merely 'Kiss'; functional yet void of mythos and integrity. So minus this exactly what am I 'missing out'?

    Billy why do you care? If it doesn't work for you anymore I get it. I have several close friends who feel the same way. I have no issue with it at all. Eric and Tommy are both exceptional musicians and they respect the music. Kiss did the reunion with the 4 original members, now its over. I don't understand why people are so upset by this. I saw 3 shows this summer. All sell outs and all fantastic. The people there didn't care

    70's Kiss could command a much larger recording contract as a result of being "bigger" than 80's Kiss who operated on a scaled down reduced deal. When Paul and Gene put their master tapes up for collateral to score that Kentucky bank loan to keep the band above water, it wasn't because they were "bigger" than 70's Kiss on ANY level, Ed is entitled to his opinions, but he's totally wrong about post-original Kiss in the 80's being bigger than the original era.

    I didn't notice if they asked Ed about what the reason was that Peter didn't do the show. I've heard it was because of Peter's arms hurting so bad but I've also heard it was a power play by him to see what they'd do if he didn't show up, but they just went ahead without him. I don't think Peter would really do that though.

Can't say I was shocked, but I was surprised. Kudos to Paul for being honest with the fans that "Peter's back at the hotel, he's not feeling well, but we got his best friend Ed Kanon on the drums! It was a minor bummer, but I had seen the Atlanta Oct. 1996 show, so it wasn't like I missed out on seeing Peter. Ed says in this interview that it was half-assed, but I disagree. Great show, guys... I just sort of stumbled into them this morning, but only got the chance to listen to Part 1 with Ed just now. Earlier today, I'd been trying to go through the comments and figure out where they started chronologically so I could follow the conversation threads from where they began (particularly the dialogue between Michael and john jones), but I never did manage to figure out where the comments really began. No matter. My hope is that you still read new comments, Michael, since I do see that this video has been up for more than a year now... So, allow me to briefly introduce myself. I am 49, I play drums, and Peter Criss was my 2nd major influence (Ringo was 1st). My first KISS concert was Dynasty, but I basically hated that album for its Disco vibe. Unmasked was released on the day I left for a month-long summer camp session in Colorado, but a local radio station played the whole album the night before, and I taped it and took it with me. I thought it was the best KISS album, but KISS wasn't "cool" anymore after Dynasty, so I told my camp mates that the tape was a friend's band to get them to listen to it, only revealing the truth after getting positive feedback on it. Not too long after I had gotten back home, one of my cabin mates sent me the news that "Criss Quits KISS"...
    At that point, I considered myself a Criss fan more than a KISS fan... and never really liked the fox nor any of the other new characters that came along. When KISS took off the makeup, though, I became interested in the band again. I never saw the band with Eric Carr, but I did see the Eric Singer version three or four times prior to the reunion.
    Now, Ed said that he became Peter's drum tech during production of the Cat Man album... I saw the Phoenix show on that tour, and I still remember the singer with the mohawk that Ed mentions. I never heard about the "Bad Boys" tour after that, but I do remember the Cat Man show pretty well. The whole band, including the mohawk guy, all looked way young, while Peter actually kind of looked like a dirt bag to me, although I was really glad to see him anyhow. His tattoos were the only recognizable thing about him to me, but I think they also contributed a lot to that initial impression. I remember the band really kicked it, great show, and the set included a lot of KISS material, which they played very well. The thing is, though, the set had so much KISS stuff that I became convinced that Paul and Gene had sent Peter out on the road to get him back in shape for a possible upcoming reunion... and when they finally brought Ace and Peter on stage at their MTV Unplugged gig a few years later, I just KNEW a tour would follow, and sure enough, it did.

    You are sure? You are confident in that statement because of what information? It is pretty clear you haven't watched all the episodes or you would know its not a Ace and Peter bashing campaign. Maybe do some research before you make misguided statements. A little info for you... #1 I praised Peter's book. #2 we discussed Vinnie. #3 we talked about vocalists and we pointed out Paul can't sing. #4 was all about producers. As you can see it is not as you incorrectly claim a campaign to bash.

    @MichaelBrandvold  11 років тому

    That is fine, that is your feelings. It only represents you, not everyone. I have been a fan since 76 and feel different and I know other fans just as old who also feel different. Why is it so hard for you accept that not everyone has the same opinion as you? Why can't you accept that nobody is right or wrong, it is all just a matter of personal taste.

  • @MichaelBrandvold
    @MichaelBrandvold  11 років тому

    I am going to preface my remarks by saying from the beginning, I LOVE the show and I appreciate EVERYTHING you guys do. I work at a factory in Michigan and listen to your episodes all day long many,many times. I have views that may diverge from some of yours but I respect y'all nonetheless. It is my opinion that the original lineup created far greater material than any other iteration ESPECIALLY the current model. While I certainly don't begrudge Tommy and Eric their positions and find it repugnant the way Ace treated Tommy the way he did, I DO find it equally ridiculous that some would try to argue this lineup is superior to the original just because these guys can play better than Ace and Peter NOW. Riddle me this: where has Tommy ever written (with Kiss) anything as good as Ace Frehley's Kiss output and where is Eric Singer's "Beth"? If this is all about the songs (as it should be) WHERE ARE THEY? No amount of sales receipt statistics from latter-day tours will ever eclipse the magic of Kiss at their ascendancy and can never out measure the impact Kiss had at the time. So many great 90's era artists were influenced to play music (largely through Ace particularly) by this lineup. The mere audacity of Kiss to release 4 separate solo albums and a made for t.v. movie all within a year's time is all one needs to know about just how big Kiss was at their pinnacle which was BACK THEN (and by extension ) NOT NOW.

      A&P can’t play these days, it is pretty simple. KISS is even bigger now than they were in the 70s.

      @@MichaelBrandvoldI wouldn’t say that directly. I’d say the band couldn’t have the lasting power without the original four without question, but to say the band is “better” now than they ever were,. That would be an understatement criminally. I love and cherish all eras of KISS. I was introduced to them during the 06/07 VH1 Rock Honors, where that moment literally changed my life seeing that hype package before they performed after Def Leppard. And I’d even say that I was endlessly fascinated by the Sonic Boom era of KISS during high school, but I wished I could experience the majesty that it was late 70s KISS. My favorite song by them for over almost two decades is Shandi, so what can I say in this matter. Have listened to the show since it started and have been rewatching all of the shows and this comment stuck out to me is all. Thanks for everything you have done in regards to persevering KISStory and have a great holiday season

    Ed is referring to the business side of things. By the end of the 80's Kiss was being managed by Paul's shrink, not a professional manager. The business side of Kiss spiraled downward after the original band split apart. The band even sold their music publishing to the Japanese in order to stay in business. They used master tapes as collateral for a bank loan. Kiss did not go on to run a bigger business after Peter and Ace left, it was all scaled down due to lower album and ticket sales.

    I just found out some guy with a bunch of Peter interviews blocked me...I guess he doesn't like anyone being critical of Peter...and then I hear this.

    Actually, I disagree with you. If they did their own characters and sound, the MAJORITY of people attending their shows wouldn't understand. At this point, most people want to see or think they're seeing classic Kiss. Only people like you and I would enjoy the changes you suggested.

    Very cool video, really enjoyed Peter's book & felt it's honesty! I never liked Ace's. In regards to the ACE/ TOMMY- PETER/ERIC debate, whatever, KISS is KISS! G & P kept it alive thru the 80's (when I REALLY discovered them) and 90's & I enjoyed Eric, Vinnie, Mark and Bruce. I always have supported KISS, even when I was not completely satsified. MONSTER is 1st CD/ ALBUM I didn't buy, kind of LOST THE LOVE. Funny thing, I played in a KISS Tribute (GENE) for the past 16 years & just stopped.

    I really love your web casts. I have an idea on how to imporve the audio... Try recording each guys audio independently. You can then synch it up and edit together with the video after the web cast is over.

    Michael, I enjoy all of your videos here and thank you for bringing this to us fans!.....question though, I guess you have no control over the audio that the other guys have [ volume, tone ] but this is your channel and you are always the least audible volume wise. Would you be able to bring your volume up and or the other guys down for future broadcasts? Thanks again for all you do.

    I totally agree,it would have been great to have seen what thy could have brought to the table, there are enough tribute bands out there for fans to re-live the original band.I feel if thy had been allowed to do their own thing,it wouldn't have divided the true fans so much, and we would be talking about the newer guys in their own right.

    How about answering the question? So the Ace and Peter makeup is what is great not the person under it? I notice you didn't say Ace and Peter are great, only their characters.
    I can promise you I am not a blind follower, I have been VERY vocal online about what I hate... the setlist, the recent tours, Eric singing Beth, Tommy singing Shock Me, the Monster book, playing on American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. Next!
