as a dungeon master who wrietes his own material, i can deeply appreciate the naming convention of "combining real words and names until it sounds cool to me". They can't all be Tolkien inventing a new language using high knowledge levels of linguistics and poetry.
You know what, I'm satisfied with that explanation. Robin's love the Zelda games is quite well known so it was destined to be related if you ask me Really like videos like these where you dig into a topic, it's interesting to know about how it possibly got its name and coincidences like that drawing looking Majora's mask. Really cool video as always, nice to see a new video for the first time a while!
Great research! Majora has been my favorite Zelda game as an adult, mainly due to the depth of the story, the character/world-building, etc. appreciate your efforts to further the fan-base’s understanding.
Ohhh man! I wouldn't have been disappointed at all... In itself, it's kinda cool to know somebody had the brass to name Majora after themself and a fun movie. I had no prior conceptions about the meaning of the name. But then you took me on this fantastic little journey, tantalizing me with these intriguing potential explanations, only to end with that??! Bah! OK I'll give you a like anyway, it was interesting, and Zelda content is soooo thin on the ground, I really appreciate the effort.
Haha I appreciate it! If you wanna see a somewhat similar (and maybe even more bitterly disappointing) check out my Cancelled Twilight Princess Sequel video
I think I actually like real reason more. Maybe it means nothing at the time. But the way you enter Termina does feel similar to Peter Parish getting sucked into Jumanji. So the real reason kinda accidentally fits pretty well
That is very cool. Told my buddies this tidbit (that it was a mix of the designer's name and maybe a nod to Robin Williams) and they were honestly touched by that. I knew that other cultures and spirituality were a big inspiration for the games, so I always thought Majora (Mujura) was named for the Rwandan word for "Thief," and that the trickster-like entity within the mask was based on the ceremonial masks, and might have been a nod to the original comic of The Mask, in which the trickster deity was African. I wanna say I was close.... but nah LOL! Thanks for sharing this one!
Something I'm surprised you didn't go deeper into are the possible connections that Majora's Mask (the game) has with Jumanji. Granted it might have been outside the scope of this video, but it seemed like you were dismissing it as just a movie. Jumanji does have several overlaping elements, (mostly in woodfall) including time reversal and transformations. Maybe an idea for a future video?
There very well could have been some overlap since Imamura was the art designer! Mostly I didn't give it much thought since it was mentioned pretty flippantly in the interview, but you do raise a good point!
I didn't know about the origin of the name Majora, and I'm glad to have learned it. The true answers always seem to be more mundane than theories people come up with.
I'm just glad to have found out about this cool art style, whether it was involved in inspiring Majora's mask or not--look at it, that's awesome, my life is enriched.
Also I gotta say, I really liked this video!! It shows that we sometimes think too hard about things that doesnt require much people. That being said, I appreciate this compilation of a lot of the different theories for Majora's name inspiration!! Honestly, I'm not sure I'd choose either one of the theories just out of reluctance that there may be an even better (yet still implausible) theory. By that, I just mean a cooler theory haha Amazing video Nayru!! 😊
I always believed it to be a combination of all things said in the video. in Breath of the Wild, the inspiration for the Sheikah tech was the Jomon culture, so it's not farfetched at all that the mask and some other architecture was based on the Meso-american cultures and that the developers of the Zelda games seem to take inspiration from architecture around the globe. Heck, not a lot of people know that the Zonai architecture was inspired by the temples of Cambodia, I might have been the first person to ever point that out in my videos :P I always felt that Majora ment evil/demon in some sort of way yes but I guess it's not. However, because of you Nayru... I need to watch Jumanji again for the zillionth time :P
Yeah it is totally undeniable that Majora's design, at the very least, took inspiration from Mesoamerican tribes. And rewatching Jumanji is always a good decision!
Part of what made Majora's Mask my favorite game for a long time was the Marajoara theory. As a brazilian and a descendant of an indigenous tribe (though not the marajoaras), this was the closest I could feel to my favorite franchise. But even so, I'm even happier learning the truth. Because it means I'm not alone when I'm giving arbitrary and silly names to my own characters lmao
And even though the name itself might not be based on the Marajoara, I think it is undeniable that a lot of aspects of Majora's Mask are influenced by Brazilian and wider Mesoamerican cultures
When I first heard of the Marajo culture and how it vanished, I immediately thought of Majora's Mask, though, I can't say I actually drew any meaningful connection. Sad to see that others have made stuff up to try to force a connection. I am, however, convinced that the petroglyph inspired the design.
Reminds me of a discussion I saw decades ago on the origin of the last name for the famous twins, Raistlin Majere and Caramon Majere of the Dragonlance book series. Surely, there was a grand meaning behind such important characters! If I remember right, the answer was similarly mundane: they were named for the herb, marjoram, and nothing more.
That also makes me think about how all the famous magicians in the Greyhawk settings just have altered versions of names of the people who played at Gary Gygax's table haha
What I'm curious about is the origin of Ganon's name. We know the origin of Link's name (link between player and the game), the origin of Zelda (Zelda Fitzgerald), but not of Ganon. I've seen an interview where one of the developers says he doesn't remember if it was just because it sounded cool, but wasn't sure himself. Other than that, I have not seen any definitive answer, but judging how they named Majora, it wouldn't surprise me at all. Great video man
Thank you! Yeah I'd be really interested to know that as well. I hope somebody spills the beans one day, but it might be one of those things that are just lost to time.
Does anyone else have or though of having Majora mask Ringtone or notifications🔔 or alarms clock⏰ songs 🎵 I have had video games for my one plus 9 👻 👾🎃🎉💚 I love this game 🎮
@@NayruYT ok so here my qween we all know that botw is a very very well revised game reviewers like it and most of the fans seemed to like to however like most things that get popular there going to be that small amount of people who don't like and believe its not a zelda game. now there are a few things to crisismon of the game like the lake of dungeons or enemies verity but there one thing I never understood and that the empty of the open world and what are your thoughts on that crisisom?
@@sueflewelling3657 I think most of those criticisms are fair, the open world is a bit empty, the enemy variety is poor, and the lack of dungeons is definitely noticeable. But I also think that all those things will improve as they make more games in this style, and I think if we are able to merge BotW with some of the older conventions of the series, we might have the next "perfect" Zelda game

Because Robin Williams favorite video game was The Legend of Zelda he even named his own daughter Zelda because he loved the game so much. Is it coincidence or conspiracy? LMAO.
...I for one am purging all mention of majora as a deity from my Zelda fanworks. This game was a fever dream had by the Hero of Time, I'm sure of it now. ...or maybe a mushroom hallucination

Maybe 5 hours of research on the Marajoara/Japanese name stuff! I learned the Jumanji fact in a trivia game a while back
