This brings tears to my eyes. I grew up in this glorious era of HK. This was the time when Hong Kong truly flexed its muscle, where people prospered not only financially but also socially with pride in their identity.
what is the spirit of Hong Kong , and can it be channeled yet again? I think so. for what is it that really made Hong Kong , Hong Kong ? Its the spirit..that unseen aspect. will you embody this spirit?
I'm a fan of Hong Kong films from the 80s and 90s, the vibes are extraordinary, the Hong Kong actors who really hit the fans are Stephen Chow and Andy Lau. Hong Kong in those years was Hong Kong, different from China, but now Hong Kong is part of China. This is precisely what made Hong Kong so iconic in the 80-90s✨
You don't know how poor we were in this 'glorious era'. It might true only for those British or the rich. But we did show you how strong and tough we were.
Also the era where Cantonese supremacists in HK culturally genocided Mandarin and other dialects in HK People forget that HK in the 50s and 60s comprised of people from all over China, and other dialects like Teochew and Hokkien were spoken very commonly but have more or less disappeared today
Now HK became just one typical city of communist China All unique characteristic of this attractive city all have been lost now So sad even i'm a foreigner
Hong Kong in the 80s was brilliant not only because of its economic prosperity, but also because it was a time when modernity and tradition were at their optimal point of balance. Plenty of progress was being made in social, economic and civic infrastructures, at the same time the old traditions were still visible and palpable in the people, architecture and culture. Last but not least, there was still a lot of optimism since 1997 was still at least a decade away at that point. The 1980s was the golden decade for Hong Kong.
I visited in the very early 2000s. It was still similar but different. 1997 was not far in the future but was so recent that no impact had yet been felt. There was more development, I landed at the new airport and some of the fishing villages were starting to get gentrified but you still saw bits of raw (as in not manifactured for tourists) Hokkian and Cantonese culture. Oh and still only a relatively few people spoke Mandarin. I think the one big change were fast trains deep into Mainland China which would have been unimaginable in the past.
The 80’s was the best time period anywhere in the world. To me. So happy I lived during the 80’s. Love HK. First went there in the 90’s. Then ended up living there. In HK Island. Central. Miss it so much. My favorite city in Asia! So much vibrant energy. Not a dull moment. Great nightlife too. The best I have ever experienced.
I was so so so fortunate to be able to grow up and live through the entire 80s as I was born at the end of 79. My family is not rich but not poor, just ok. I got to experience everything there were culturally, and economically as everyone worked hard. I experienced the traditional side of HK while I also understand the Chinese tradition. And with the best music, movies and TV shows are all produced in the era, you are never bored. I so missed my time growing up despite the pressure from school. Thank you HK for everything that makes me of who I am.
Indeed! Everyone who lived through that era of Hong Kong would tell you how much they miss those days. Nobody was forced to do anything, and nothing could stop you from doing anything. We all willingly worked hard together to make Hong Kong a better place, without any regret. There was an opportunity for you regardless of your background, and we did not feel oppressed at all, even though it was a colonized city. We built up this strong sense of caring for the community, which is now slowly shifting to a hostile environment. It's unfortunate to see how times have changed, and we can do nothing about it but to stay silent and accept.
+1 Was born in HK in 1976, and school definitely was the most nightmarish of my youthful existence. Classes in physics,, chemistry, biology, French, etc, being taught in 1st form ( 7th grade) were definitely NOT what my 11 y/o self looked forward to at all. I miss being able to safely explore (solo) anywhere in HK as a young child on the MTR without fear of crime at all (maybe pickpockets), it was a really safe place in the 80’s. Left in 1991, wasn’t until I was an adult that I truly appreciated what a special place Hong Kong was during the 80’s.🥹
I miss old Hong Kong, & especially I miss the golden era of Hong Kong movies & movie stars. You had to be there to witness it, it was such an amazing time. Hong Kong movies for me ruled the world in creativity & inventiveness, always did & always will, I miss you Hong Kong.
I lived in HK in the 1980s for several years. What an amazing place and what an amazing experience. Fantastic life style and so much to see and do. Best experience ever. Watching planes flying in to land at Kai Tak from my apartment window was an experience to behold. Hong Kong was an amazing place to live in at that time, and I often think about the wonderful years that we spent there! Long live Hong Kong!!
@@CripplingDuality There is free education and healthcare in Hong Kong. The welfare system is not horrible. Inequality is there but way better than the “big neighboring countries”.

My friend's dad lived in HK from the late 70s to the mid 90s. I love hearing his stories, I don't think I've ever been more jealous of where a person lived.

I was lucky enough to travel to HK in 1980. It was the first time I had ever been outside the USA and was the spark that ignited my wanderlust. I was 17 years old. I’ve never gotten the city out of my system. The world is a different place entirely now. We lived at the Mandarin Oriental for 8 weeks. My dad was a mid management salesman and the company sent him there to open up an office. We were simply middle class in America but lived like royalty in HK. I’m old and poor now and will probably never be back again. I’m still more lucky than the people of HK
Hong Kong in the 80s actually what inspired a whole genre visual for "cyberpunk" aesthetic. Both Blade Runner & GiTS has directed visual comparisons with Hong Kong Market streets, Monster Building, etc.
Hong Kong back then was like the Hollywood of Asia. Probably 80's and 90's were the peak of it. We used to watch Hong Kong movies from time to time in our VHS back then. Action movies, Kungfu, Love stories even the Adult vids 😂😂 😂 you name it. I miss watching some of Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Stephen Chow movies. CDramas and CMovies aren't that popular as of now but they are starting to climb the ladder. Time flies so fast 😅.
Some of the best movies imo was from 80s Hong Kong. Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Stephen Chow, Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen, Jet Li and even Bloodsport. As a 90s kid I always remember how powerful the Hong Kong scene was. It doesnt seem to be the same or maybe i'm just out of touch.

I started going to HK in 1978 or 1979. We have an apartment there we owned where my then single dad and grandmother stayed after escaping from mainland China to prevent the drafting of my father to the red army. After they relocated to the Philippines where my grandfather had success as a businessman. My dad's brother lived there in our apartment with his family after they themselves were able to escape the communist regime in the 70s. I know that part of North Point like the back of my hand as I frequented HK from 1978 up to the present. From 10 years old up to my current 55 year old self, I have considered HK to be the best city in Asia for food, shopping and general visiting. I love, love it. Imagine that I also brought my eldest here when he was 10, same age I was 40+ years ago. we have plans to visit again soon with my youngest son and we are very excited to see my cousins and two of my aunts there. Wow that's a great hitory, I hope you can return to HK and that things get better there I have a similar family history of my family members escaping the communist regime and the red army, but in Europe, my population ethnic state is within the Russian territory (Karelia) even though we're ethnic Finnish. things are pretty bad in Russia right now too, and I hope things improve there as well and in Ukraine 🙏
This film makes me feel nostalgic for some reason even though I am not born in that era. Now I am jealous of my parents and grandparents who have experienced the golden era of Hong Kong.

I missed those days in HK. It was always a busy life. From the morning till nite , you were always have fun. Lovely and beautiful HK will never forget where I grew up.
Those were the good/sad days that I missed in Hong Kong while I was pursuing education, raising family and establishing my career in United States. Thank you for sharing.
The 1980s how I remember them so well❤So wonderfully 80s and HK❤ But its all gone now😢
I am lucky to grow up in the Hong Kong golden age
my glamorous and charming Hong Kong, it was such amazing in 80s. this was true. tks for uploading.
認得很多電影的場面:少女日記、靚妹仔、流金歲月、旺角卡門、英雄本色、 胭脂扣... 非常懷念。
不過其實有些片段是在台灣呢!
Lived it, loved it!
It must have been fantastic, I was there a little too late, in 1994 the first time, had the luck to visit the Walled City shortly before it was demolished..
looks like any Jackie Chan movie, but without the fights
😅

A montage of HK's prime times. The best memory of us.
Lived in Kowloon,Sunderland Rd, time of my life. Commuted between Sydney and Hong Kong, two of the great cities of the "Eighties." "Magic" times.
This is so bitter-sweet
I loved and dreamed about this place in the 80's
Thank you !
May we have the titles of the HK movies you used ?
