- This video is about different master cylinder choices for 79-93 and 94-04 mustangs. The emphasis is upgrading fox (79-93) mustangs to 5 lug w/ larger brakes and also rear disc.
'84-86 SVO - (SAE Threads) 1 1/8" bore. Integrated aluminum reservoir unit. No low fluid sensor. This is the same as the 84-90 Lincoln Mark 7. The difference is usually the SVO is aluminum, and the Lincoln can be a cast iron unit. The aluminum is what you want to keep the weight down. SVO used 73mm caliper and disc brakes.
'85 Towncar - (SAE Threads) 1" bore. Integrated aluminum reservoir. No low fluid sensor.
'79-'86 GT/LX (SAE Threads) 7/8" bore. Integrated reservoir. No low fluid sensor. Front Iron calipers have single 60mm bore.
'83-'86 GT/LX (SAE Threads) 21mm bore. Integrated reservoir. No low fluid sensor. Front Iron calipers have single 60mm bore.
'87-'93 GT/LX - (Metric Threads) 21mm bore. Removable reservoir. Low fluid sensor. 3 Port (bottom port goes directly to left front). Front Iron calipers have single 60mm bore.
'93 Cobra - (Metric Threads) 1.00" bore. Removable reservoir. Low fluid sensor. Front Iron calipers have single 60mm bore.
'94-'95 GT/V6 - (Metric Threads) 1 1/16" bore (1.050" actually measured). Removable reservoir. Low fluid sensor. Front Iron calipers have single 60mm bore.
'94-'98 V6 - (Metric Threads) 1 1/16" bore, Removable reservoir. Low fluid sensor. Front Iron calipers have single 60mm bore.
'94-95 Cobra - (Metric Threads) 15/16" bore. Removable reservoir. Low fluid sensor. Ports are reversed thread sizes from 87-95 LX/V6/GT. Front Aluminum PBR Cobra caliper has twin 38mm pistons.
'99-'04 V6 - (metric threads) 1.000" and 1.006" bore. Removable reservoir. Low fluid sensor. Front Aluminum PBR caliper has twin 45mm pistons (same as GT).
96+ V8 Units - These are hydroboosted and the mounted flange is vertically not horizontal as required for a vacuum booster. They will NOT work
Larger bore = harder pedal feel
Smaller bore = sofer pedal feel - Авто та транспорт
Finally, someone expressed this! Excellent lesson Sir. Big Brakes are nothing if your pushing with a weenie master cylinder.
Hey John, Snot Rocket here definitely looking to follow this series in the near future. I'll be going to Cobra PBR calipers up front and disc rears on my '03 Cobra IRS and could definitely use a good recommendation on master cylinder and brake line/prop valve setup.
I converted my 1988 mustang GT to manual brakes including the Manual brake peddle
system, I had to go to a 15é16 bore to get the peddle to have proper feel!
I used a large 1.062 bore because that was what most people I talked to Recommended! the peddle was so hard I couldn't stop the car. I found the Manual master for a 1988 ranger fit and give me more room because the lines come out the left side.
I am running stock GT calipers front and 10`x 2` Ranger drums rear!
hey bud, thank you kindly for doing this write up....it saved my A$$!
Awesome video with great explanation! Thank you.
Great info... I currently have the MM SVO conversion with the Northracecars T-bird rears calipers. I'm moving up to 13"/12.65" 03/04 cobra brakes. I'll be doing this soon as I get my calipers powder coated. I have both of the master cylinders you mentioned 15/16th and 1 1/16th bore, just need to figure out which combination to use.
Thank you for this. Made upgrading to 13" cobra brakes on my 90lx alot easier. Great info
Thanks for the info!
great video thank you
1and 1 /16 inch is 1 .062 " not 1.1/8 1/8 inch is .125 ""
great video thanks for the info i have a 88 fox with 2003 front brakes and stock rear drum what set would you use to get a stock feel thanks for your time
very informative video thank you so much, im planning to order the remaster from Baer, but dunno what bore to get. already got 6 piston calipers all arround, what would u reccomend?
Thank you!
Great video, thanks! Can you help me, I'm planning on upgrading my FRONT brakes to SVO calipers but keeping the rears stock for now. What would be the ideal master for me or should I keep my stock one?
Thanks
I've got a rear end and brakes off an 84 SVO and fronts from a 95 mustang that are going on my '88 LX. Which master would work best? And how can I work around that extra port on the bottom that my MC has and the others don't?
Lots of good info in this video. Thank you.
Hopefully you can help. I have a Ford Maverick but I'm running the sn95 front and rear setup. What master cylinder should I use for that
I used a 96 gt 4w disc setup and I have the same MC, what BB can I bolt it up to for a stock pedal feel. The 96 v6 BB isnt fitting well so I was looking for ideas
Will a brake booster make a difference too? if so which one would you recommend?
Curious if you know anything about the M1858 M/C?
1984 Mustang GT here, with front spindles/rotors/calipers off of an 87-93 V8 Mustang, and an 8.8 with drum brakes from an 87-93 V8 Mustang as well.
Either my brake booster or master cylinder are out, as I have to press the pedal almost all the way down for it to slow the car down (this occurred prior to me even changing the brakes). I am going to be changing the brake booster and master cylinder on the car, and was looking for suggestions.
a.) Change to a reman 84 booster/cylinder unit (although the internet says they aren't that strong of units)
b.) Change to a reman 84 booster/94-95 cylinder unit
c.) Change to an 87-93 booster/94-95 cylinder unit
The reason I mention 94-95 master cylinders is due to the number of ports. I believe it would make my life easier correct? Am I headed in the right direction with those choices? Any of them ideal? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for all the nice/informative vids! My ‘89 Fox currently has ‘95 Cobra front brakes and drums in the rear. I’m about swap in a ‘04 Cobra IRS. What MC do you recommend? What brake line kit would I need? Also, will the stock Fox brake booster be ok?
The cobra IRS uses the same varga caliper as the gt with the live axle but the rotor diameter is larger. I would go with a 95 cobra master and the 93 cobra brake booster.
Hey there im doing zort of a crazy comptrapsion I'm setting a ford ranger 92 with 4 wheel disc I'm thinking on using mustang cobra brakes 12 rear 13 front including calipers, the thing is my factory master cil have a 1 in bore, would u recommend look for something larger 97s have a 1.065 bore I think, thanks
ok im building a 79 fairmont id like swap over to manuel brakes but not real sure which mc is best . Ok i did 4 disc brake running 87-93 up front and explorer in the rear i know they sell many kits but ive read that the mc they offer are for big bore brake systems like wilwood and others which with stock brake your pedal will be really hard and not as responsive , since im just running bascailly stock brake set up do you know what mc would work best so id have best pedal response and braking ?
Assuming a stock new edge v6, factory brakes, or maybe a small front brake upgrade, what is the harm (negative effects) of using the larger bore SVO Master Cylinder. Seems like much more braking force with less pedal effort, but no real negatives beside overbuilt. Is there an actual possibility of blowing out brake seals? Seems you can do that with any Master if you kick the pedal hard enough?
I converted to rear disc, im using t bird turbo coupe rears and 60mm front calipers, stock 5.0 booster. I want to add a 93 cobra mc, and an adjustable ppv. How many turns out on the booster rod? Thank you
where is the follow up video?
Why didn't you show 2000 mustang v6 master cylinder
If i get to the 95 master cylinder convestion. i must to keep the proporcional Valve?
Dears
I need your help
Can I instal or replace Master Cylinder For 2000 Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis in 1967 mustang ,
My 1967 mustang Front disc And rear Drum ?
Can I run 98 gt calipers with a 91 4 cyl booster/master cylinder?
Im just looking to make room for my 460 valve cover for now and thats it .. i have a 93 lx 4 cyl car all factory .. do i need to just keep the factory master cylinder for now until i get ready to upgrade brakes ?
Have you made any more brake up dates ?..I'm putting Mark VII calipers n master cylinder with SVO spindles on my 93 LX with 302 front rotors ?
So for a factory 85 GT, 4 lug. I have all new factory brakes and I’m pushing thru them at the tree on the track. So I need a bigger bore master or???
I just got a 84 notchback mustang with 94 gt front spindles and unknown 5 lug dic break rear end and I’m a bit lost on where to start no booster no master cylinder just front breaks that I was told they were off a 94 gt Is there any chance I can email or chat some time for some input that’d be amazing
Great video, I have a question. I have a 93 lx convertible and I'm doing the swap. I sourced everything off of a 94gt except the brake booster, should I get a brake booster or can I use my 93 booster?
The 93 lx booster will work but the 93 cobra is a better overall booster. Same as 94/95 but has a fox firewall bolt pattern. The 94/95 will work with some clearance-ing of the firewall.
@@JohnButler350 appreciate the information....I think I might run mine and see what it feels like.......thanks again 👍
Last year I found a chart that listed all of the master cylinders with bore sizes and fitting sizes. It also listed any other differences. I can't find it anywhere now. I know I wound up with a V6 non-ABS master but I don't remember why I chose that one. Does anyone know where I can find this chart again?
I found it! The page was offline but I was able to get the PDF using the internet archive. If anyone wants a copy let me know. It also has Ford and Raybestos part numbers.
Tyler Smith Can I get a link to the chart? Thanks
Ill take 1 as well
Crownvic 85 master cylinder fit?
Hello which master cylinder would yo recommend for a SN95 five lug conversion on the front, but still running rear drum brakes?
I don't recommend that combo, sorry. Best best would be sn95 rear varga calipers with a sn95 master.
i 79 Mustang I need help find a master cylinder gasket for my car not sure if it's a true four cylinder car or a true v8 car has 82 motor in it v8 302 and my master cylinders cast iron like the last one on the video you posted Square in the back reservoir oval in the front reservoir if you can respond back I will be greatly appreciate it thank you
Cardone 13-1764 should be what you need
great info but 1 and .125 would be 1 1\8" ...js :)
i'm surprised that not many caught that.
I'm running the same PBR dual piston calipers u have there and svo rear calipers.. I'm debating weather the sn95 master is gonna push enough fluid to stop my car or should I go with the svo master cylinder.. also I have an original 88 4 cyl brake booster to go with that combo my question is would that booster workwith the cylinder or should I go ahead and upgrade too
I recommend going with full SN95 setup. Twin piston PBR with the 94-04 rear varga calipers, then use a sn95 v6 master. combine with a adjustable proportioning valve.
Stang Vids yea eventually I will convert but as of now I already bought brand new calipers rotors and pads for the stock svo 7.5.. I did want to install the sn95 rear calipers on my 7.5 but I was told the sn95 mounts will not bolt up to my rear end so I chose to just go with this set up so I'm kinda stuck here for a while meanwhile I get a 8.8
7.5 and 8.8 are very similar. You can put fox length (ford ranger/bronco) axles in your 7.5" (8.8 and 7.5 use the same axles). The housing tubes, flanges, and brakes are the same.
The 94-04 parts are cheap in junkyards, combined with used ranger/bronco axle shafts.
Stang Vids so u think it's a bad idea to use the svo rear calipers?
I'm not a fan of the SVO gear.
In the 6:00 min mark you say the bore size is 1-1/16" but measures 1.050" and then state that 1-1/16" is 1.125" 1/16" is .0625" so unless you using a good bore mic to measure the bore your only .012" smaller than 1-1/16' not the .075" you say.
the ford crown vic master and mustang master swap over crown vic stock has a 1 inch bore
this is referring to the 03+ models they also have a level sensor but its connector is different than the one found on ford mustangs
Are the 79-86 brakes as good as 87-93? I see a lot of guys use stock brakes in their street/strip car that's a 87-93, but cant find anyone who uses stock brakes on their 79-86. I just bought a 79 is why I'm asking
If you are doing 4 lug then upgrade to the 87 to 93 v8, yes they are better
I have a 79 as well. I installed the PBR front calipers and the five lug spindles. I just ordered a 93 cobra brake booster, but running into a problem sourcing the adapters to run the 93 cobra master cylinder
.125 is 8th inch .063 is 16th inch
Danny mcbride ladies and gentlemen
That's so funny, I was not expecting to see that in the comments, but just watched "this is the end" the other night and I soon as I started this video that is immediately what I thought!
Wouldn’t a smaller bore create more pressure!??
you have to look at the cylinder bore and the piston diameter (and number of pistons) of the caliper
1.0625 = 1-1/16" inch ..... 1.125 = 1-1/8" inch.
I just need a gasket you can text or email me not good with computers. do not know if I should put email or phone number.
master cylinders don't have gaskets. they have internal seals. if yours is leaking you just need to replace the unit.
on top of the master cylinder where you fill it up with brake fluid. when I took the lid off there was a gasket but the gasket no good..??
+tommy Didio gotcha.... the lid has a rubber seal. I've never seen a replacement for that lid. except when buying a new master cylinder. might be best to find one out of an early eighties car in the junkyard and see if it'll fit. you could probably rig one up by using the rubber from an innertube.
ok cool thank you
Thanks for the info!
