    Really feels like it was not so long ago too. I got into programming for web literally 20 years. Fell in love with making tools for storing and exchanging information. Just read the books and used PCs at a local gaming cafe that had no internet to type in the code I wrote down back at home in my textbook.

    If you're working on a 3D game project, Blender is a must-have. Sometimes you just wanna make a simple fix for a 3D model, or maybe need some kind of a quick prototype model, Blender might be the fastest way to get it done. Plus I love how Blender UX feels with the abandonment of gizmos (which you can re-enable if you don't agree with me) and I wish Unity themselves would consider Blender-like controls instead of translate-rotate-scale gizmos that it has like Unreal.

    Rider is really good, helps me code so much, it's the one thing I don't think I could do without.
    Free software wise -:
    2d editing - Gimp (alpha channel and effects can be very useful)
    2d Art editing - Krita / paid option (Clip studio - it has vector graphic mode which can be useful)
    Recording videos - OBS
    Editing videos - Blender can add text and sub videos it's actually pretty good
    Post it note/memory wall - Pureref
    Copy and paste anything - Snipping tool in windows! Good to save stuff off to pureref.
    Editing fonts - Fontforge
    Music - Bandlab - if you want to compose some basic music using samples for free this is great and relatively fast too.

    Liked your game making tutorials! I teach as well, and feel that you are concise and informative, and can also be critical without being insulting.
    Most of these tools are comparing apples to apples, I use what I learned on, and haven't been convinced to try other options. Been forced by employers to use certain programs, and I usually go running back to what I'm used to. Love Visual Studio, and paying over $100 a year for Rider to suggest some code changes to me isn't worth it. I even have resharper at work, and use the built in VS tools more often, and remain just as productive as others who swear by resharper. I love GitHub and its VS integrations, was forced to learn SourceTree and BitBucket and wasn't a fan, just different enough that when I went home to use GitHub I felt more at ease.
    But again it feels like apples to apples, and with dev's having to use 15 tools to make programs/games these days, being your own QA, and Release engineer, and artist, I'm just happy to see people creating. I stick with what I know just to spend more time producing and less time learning new tools, just to learn them.
    If there is something that greatly increases productivity USE IT! But jumping on every new tool, just because someone likes it will keep you so busy you may never create anything.
    Please keep making people think about what they use, as well as help beginners get a good idea where to start.

    source tree is awesome! i think the term you were looking for is gui. it doesn't do anything more than what you could do from the command line, but it's so much easier, and nicer to look at.

    •  3 роки тому

      "Client" is the better term, actually.

    • @wagz2000
      @wagz2000 3 роки тому +1

      @ not necessarily. the command line could also be considered a client, because a client is anything that accesses a service. source tree is a gui because it adds one more layer of abstraction by turning cli commands into something clickable.

    •  3 роки тому

      @@wagz2000 well, yeah, the command line IS a client as well. SourceTree is a client application for Git, with graphic user interface.

    • @wagz2000
      @wagz2000 3 роки тому

    Git, SourceTree, GitHub, GitBucket, etc ... => it's VCS (Version Control System)
    This is the acronym used in JetBrains IDEs ;)
    Also, I personnaly use Krita instead of The Gimp. It is an open source tools, very similar to Photoshop. You should try it Jason :p
    For GameDev Design and management, I use Hack'n Plan which is designed for GameDev Workflow.

  • @tmoneygamestudio
    @tmoneygamestudio 3 роки тому

    Man Jason all these tools that you use I started using a couple of years ago. I like the education version of Rider, but it is limited to one year, still not bad. And love SourceTree because I can upload to Github, Gitlab and Bitbucket if I want to. Now if I don't create a gignore file it will upload sound files, fbx files, and any file that would require you to use Git-LFS. I also use the cloud server called iDrive. They have a $6.95 USD for 5TB for the first year and $69.99 USD every year after that. I find it's useful to backup the files that overload Git there. So I can have a backup of the game I'm working on. Plus the upside is with the software you download from their site, you can do incremental backups of my game folder as I work daily. It even allows you to select the time to do the backups in the background. Sometimes I'm playing or play testing a game when it starts its upload.

There are tons of plugins/tools for different effects. Also for designing UI I highly recommend InVision Studio, where you can create templates with a lot of control over each element and its children.

    Is there any guideline how to use Github (or source control in general) with a big Unity project (by big I mean with many large models, textures, audio files etc that blow up the space)? I usually modify the git ignore to exclude all "static files" like external models, audio files etc and use it for my source code, scenes, prefabs etc. this is fine, because I work solo, so I backup my whole project locally and only use source control for the "dynamic assets" like code/prefab/scene/setting changes during development, but I imagine there must be a better way to handle large projects without blowing up the source control size.

    • @jameswright1788

    pros: same ui and shortcuts as photoshop, also supports photoshop brush packs and much cheaper..
    cons: doesn't contain filters like liquify and has crappy rotate view options and doesn't contain 2d animation tools..
    there is Gimp which is also a powerful image editing program ...and Krita which is more catered towards illustration and animation.
    but their shortcuts are quite different from Photoshop and require a learning curve...

    I think personally that Paint.NET has a lot cleaner of an interface compared to Photoshop and Gimp.
    If you are scared of diving into a feature rich software like I am, then that would be my suggestion for a softer aproach.
    Been using it for many years, and the only two features I've felt like I really missed at certain times would be "custom brush" and "outline".
    Apart from that, great and simple free editor to get to know the basics of image editing.

    Viewer from India here, I want to buy this course but 997 USD is way too steep for a student, let alone for someone from a third world country. But I have learned a lot from using your videos on Singletons / Factory Patterns/ Observers etc and using them as starting points. Thank You!

    I think you don't need to use another app like Source Tree when Jetbrains IDEs (Rider in your case) has great built-in source tree and other git related stuff.
