@wyne9145 does not have to cooperate with the aircraft. strike drones have been in service for decades. they just weren't stealth and jet. it is quite enough for basic bombing or carrying missiles. direct support of the A-10 type is not realistic in modern warfare anyway
@@pipexxinar6444 My brother in Christ, we literally already have that it's called a fucking B21 Raider. A drone that is designed to kill will always be a HITL system, because there is no way in hell anyone with a functioning brain is going to give that capability to an AI that can be broken into. This also doesn't solve the problem of drones getting countered by kinetic defenses. Missiles, CIWS or L-CIWS.
@sunrisejackdaw1779 yeah bro it's like drones of different sizes and capacities are quickly taking over roles once dominated by manned craft. Isn't that crazy?
This is why you bring Anti Air and i mean Dual Purpose with both Gun and Missiles because BRRT though the Swarm and the Missile for the Planes, also how many drones would it take to carry a person for a Trip from like the USA to Spain
So you just need a swarm of drones that can withstand EW, reach above airfields hundreds of KM behind the line with plenty of flight time to spare, either have an enemy that don't know how to use hangar or netting or loiter long enough for an aircraft to be taking off at the runway all without getting shot down by short range air defense like pantsir or gepard, and quickly and accurately swan dive into the planes air intake??? That's all???
@@bruh-ni1fy That's a lot of words that I didn't say. The difference in cost alone instantly justifies a 1:10,000 success rate if it even forces an airfield to abort a critical flight operation. We already see the old idea of simple fast attack craft being enough of a threat shifting into suicide drone boats that *just* need multiple counters to all work in unison or lose a whole egg basket.
@@DeeDos1484 The laws of economics dictate that if you need a system to do this that and then whatever it was designed to do, it isn't going to be mass produceable. You make a drone that can fly two to three hundred kilometers to reach an airfield, that adds cost and complexity. You then need to have it be EW resistant or AI driven, that adds cost and complexity. You need it to be able to either not be detected by enemy early warning systems, that adds cost and complexity. Suddenly, you're drone swarm is starting to look a little bit like a drone squadron, which is far from a swarm. With the advent of laser-based CIWS, it's pretty much going to be really easy to park a couple of those bad boys around an Airfield with Radars spotting the drones before they can even get close. Let's say, one makes it and destroys an aircraft on the runway. Good... now the base will be given EVEN MORE defenses. Good luck next time, or the time after that... or the time after that etc. You can keep sending your shit drones, until someone tracks down where they are coming from and that place gets a fun little JDAM surprise.
I mean, they could intercept it? alot of SHORAD systems are already capable of intercepting incoming munitions already, so it wouldn't be stretch for drones to be able to do intercepts as well
Ok, but, isnt the point of modern fighter jets just to spam missiles anyway? Why kepp an expendive (and vulnarable) platform when regular missiles could do the trick? Especially for countries without domestic airplane production, as fighter pilot training is far longer than, say, launcher operators.
Well, when your shitty 30-dollar drone can do the same things an actual aircraft can do...let me know. Cheapo quadcopters are useful...for recon. A jet can still do that recon with a targeting pod, but they can also strike targets with biiiiiiiig munitions. Tanks, trains, fuel depots, supply bases, enemy headquarters etc... all these things can be killed by a plane that is flying high above drone swarms AND not targetable by enemy SAM systems or fighters.
>Drones cant fly high enough Thats just an engineering issue which is an easy fix >Jamming exists So do home on jam missiles Drones as they are being used now are extremely effective and there are people who want to see what other areas they are effective in, the age of the manned fighter can very well be coming to a deminished role from its previous king of the skies position.
I what they are referring to is a drone swarm of cheap DJI drones. Since from what I see from the comments it seems that mr. Elon Musk is saying that the US airforce should replace it's entire fleet of aircraft with these drones and expect them to somehow perform on the same level as some of the fighters they are going to replace. Though as you said in your first point, its an engineering issue; its just that it isnt an easy fix since we have to design an AI to be on par with human pilots and the aircraft to put them in. Drones are being used extremely effective at ground target and seaborne for now and maybe air targets if you count the unfortunate helicopter once in a while, but so far any plans for an air superiority/interceptor and strategic bomber drones are still theoretical. Who knows, maybe once the war in Ukraine is over and the worlds militaries decided to invest more in drone technology, the ai uav's in ace combat might become a reality in the future.
In future manned fighters are basically going to be a combination AWACS and C&C for advanced drones, which will actually be going into the combat airspace; the USAF has already been experimenting with this for the last ten years (EG, MQ-28 and things like that- and those are just the things we KNOW about, not whatever they're tinkering with at Groom Lake). That isn't what musk was talking about though; the giga-brain was talking about copter-type drones, probably misconstruing stuff from articles he skimmed talking about them. These are a completely different type of system, which is more like infantry support equipment, and while they are an emergent field in warfare they are not going to replace aircraft. Specifically I think he saw the articles about how people are making drones to counter drones, and instead of learning the actual reason (shooting a drone down with MANPADS, let alone actual SAMS is expensive), he thought "Aw sick, drone air war, drones are the new planes!"
@barrag3463 You know, now that I think about it, few seemed to mention unmanned water and ground vehicles when it comes to ai replacing their manned counterparts.
@@CharlesOrbe well to at least address the AI part- none of these are replacing men or manned systems, they're meant to augment them. A lot of drones only have automation to help the commander while they control multiple drones, and only fully take over when given fire authority and if the connection is jammed (so the drone still hits it's target). To go back to F-35 (and in future NGAD) and their Drone Wingmen, the idea is that the wingmen will be under the control of the manned fighter, and in addition to serving as an extra layer of protection (both a picket looking for and engaging air targets), they also will allow the manned fighter to "carry" more ordinance and strike at more targets. Automation will be there to help the pilot(s) so they don't have to micro-manage every unit, but they're still going to be the ones designating targets and telling the AI when / if it's ok to fire.
Nothing will really be able to beat laser-based CIWS, because that can melt through any drone that can be cheap enough to build in swarms. It's also dirt cheap to use as opposed to missiles and is undodgeable unlike 20mm CIWS systems are.
@galactic-guy I'm sure you could link drones to ground-based radar, to ID and track incoming munitions. Missiles I'd see as doable, bog-standard shells less so. But again, there are plenty of factors. I could definitely see drones being employed specifically to loiter and target incoming enemy drones. I suppose there's also the question of "Do we need a drone to intercept munitions?" when instead, we could employ other ground, air or sea-based solutions?
@@Fortunate_Fennec If drones really do make fighter jets obsolet (which is simply not true), then every nation would only use drones. No one would use missles, jets bombs etc. and therefore drones would only have to fight drones. This would make everything you mentioned irrelevant
@@galactic-guy never myself mentioned about making those systems obsolete, only that drones could theoretically be developed. I could simply see drones supplementing / countering them just like any other system. Jet aircraft with AI / remote control? Have fun disregarding human G-limitations. Cheaper, guided, long-range munitions? Have drones laser-guide munitions in. Achieving effects in situations where you don't want human lives at risk? Deploy the drones. Given human ingenuity, it wouldn't surprise me to see drones employed in counter-battery roles, to trace incoming munition flight-paths back to source, identify launchers, and destroy them. To be fair, I'm curious how long it'll be before somebody develops drones that can be launched via shell/missile.
@@Fortunate_FennecDARPA is working on the AI variants (probably not going to release in our life times) There's already drone jets.... for like a long ass time, their only used for testing weapons (so we don't blow up test pilots nonstop) and also not worry about the thing being jammed in combat: any jets with Q before it like the QF-4 Phantom or QF-16

Design is intention. Drones are for low flying ground combat, like taking out tanks with suicide drones or obsrvation. Aircraft are for altitude combat, like dogfighting, CAS (Close Air Support), and interception.

@wyne9145 does not have to cooperate with the aircraft. strike drones have been in service for decades. they just weren't stealth and jet. it is quite enough for basic bombing or carrying missiles. direct support of the A-10 type is not realistic in modern warfare anyway

OpenAI's partner is putting MANPADS on drones.
Please make more videos about Medieval Soldiers vs Modern Soldiers
I mean. If the drones just spawn camp airfields, all they have to do is swan dive into the air intake while holding a rock.

Quadcopter swarms
Ok, but, isnt the point of modern fighter jets just to spam missiles anyway?
Why kepp an expendive (and vulnarable) platform when regular missiles could do the trick?
Especially for countries without domestic airplane production, as fighter pilot training is far longer than, say, launcher operators.
Jets are more flexible in the type of missile/bomb they fling

@@defcon4215 It's not "vs". Both are important tools that have their own separate functions.

>Drones cant fly high enough
Thats just an engineering issue which is an easy fix
>Jamming exists
So do home on jam missiles
Drones as they are being used now are extremely effective and there are people who want to see what other areas they are effective in, the age of the manned fighter can very well be coming to a deminished role from its previous king of the skies position.
🤣
lol
Key word is "yet." Drones can't fly high enough or stop munitions yet.
How are they ever supposed to stop munitions?
@@Fortunate_FennecDARPA is working on the AI variants (probably not going to release in our life times)
There's already drone jets.... for like a long ass time, their only used for testing weapons (so we don't blow up test pilots nonstop) and also not worry about the thing being jammed in combat: any jets with Q before it like the QF-4 Phantom or QF-16
