Custom widgets/blocks that are user customizable are definitely cool & interesting, and the development cost is more because now we have to build out the frontend and develop a customizable backend ui.

Great video as always. I have found an increase in people who want you to manage their sites. Plenty of clients want to hire me to just manage their websites and server. They have WordPress websites and don't actively manage their own sites to they look for someone to do it for them. I have been getting more clients this way than building their websites.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. It is worth to mention that, what small business needs in terms of online presence is a cheep (Not expensive) company website. Whatever the business is about, a product or service the price for your website matters. I tried wix, shopify and couple of more for my website and they far to expensive to start small business. Practically one can have a website set up und running for the cost of the domain name and hosting, which is a fraction of the cost compared to the mentioned above. (do not want to say the names again) and it will not take ages...

It's absolutely important to learn how to code and have the fundamentals of programming for the web down (frontend UI + server-side scripting). You need to be able to, at the bare minimum, write a custom widget with custom functionality from top to bottom in most drag and drop builders. Drag and drop builders will always have the downside of only being able to do a limited number of things so a great way to add value is be able to expand the possibilities for the client with a white glove service. If what you do can be done with a drag and drop template you're definitely in a risky position.

Hey man, thank you so much. Love the no-frills informational vids you have one your channel! I haven't started building in wp yet but want to learn front end. I have a background in graphic design but have been working in broadcast television for 10 years. I'm looking for a career change and I want to work for myself. Do you plan on producing introductory videos or getting started type videos? I plan on using free resources like YT and the WP developer resources pages in lieu of stuff like Udemy. Thanks again. EDIT: when you refer to code, is this HTML, CSS, JS?

How do you feel like the new block editor and the theme development will help freelance work?

  • @Geomaverick124

I feel that drag and drop devs will have a job but the will need to know theme and plugin development. Also I think what will happen is that these newer builders will cause Divi, Elementor, Gutenburg to get alot better and evolve faster...it will also thin out the page builder pool as well.

These growth ratios are misleading. The only two numbers that matter are these: 36% of THE WHOLE INTERNET is WordPress and 63% of the cms market share is WordPress. This in contrast to 2.3% & 4% for Shopify, the boldest and strongest contender... THAT’S x15 TIMES BIGGER! WordPress is here to stay for a looooooooong time my friends. Not to mention WordPress is constantly evolving and adapting very very well.

I think it comes down to business strategy by understanding and solving the client's problem. Most small businesses know they need to have an online presence but can't afford to hire an agency with a developer, designer and marketer, 3 different jobs. This is especially true when first starting and they have enough on their plate running a business. This is where a page builder can be helpful.
I freelance evenings and weekends for a few small businesses who I mostly help with design and marketing, but I also build websites when they ask for them. I have a solid understanding of CSS/HTML and some JS through my full time job as a web designer. That has helped me a lot when working with Elementor, such as understanding the box model and how responsive design can affect content. I also watch channels such as WPCasts to better understand what WordPress is capable of. I can't see my clients paying to hire me for my services and then hiring a dedicated developer to custom build a WordPress website though. At least not right now.
My previous role in an agency we worked on only custom websites with WordPress. The budget was much better for that type of work and these were established companies making much more than the mom-and-pop store down the street. Plus the client's need justified a custom build vs just using Elementor for their site.
I try and educate my freelance client's the best I can. When there's a website that I won't be able to complete efficiently with the tools I have available, I send them to someone else who might be able to custom build a website for them.
As the podcast mentioned, I don't think these page builders will take jobs away from developers, just the type work that most developers WON'T WANT TO DO. Thanks for the video.

Hi, i love your content, what do you think of freelancers having their own hosting company and hosting all of their clients websites in it? is it a good idea?

Also, regular folks just don’t get the web. No matter how simple you make the Drang’n’Drop for them. Plenty of work for devs & designers for the foreseeable future.

This question bug me and people always answer sarcastically, Why learn Wp theme/plugin development if we have front end builders?
I know jobs are shrinking for drag n drop freelancers but also for WP THEME / PLUGIN developers.
I am thinking about learning PHP with Laravel & Something unique in WP

I think Wordpress has fixed many vulnerabilities and moving great with Blocks. It is easy to use as Headless. I think Wordpress developers has more than one ways to earn money. Wordpress is still the King Of Internet.

I'm considering starting a career in WordPress development, but I'm a little worried about the job outlook. Do WordPress developers even code anymore or can the entire website be easily built using page builders? Will there be a need for WordPress developers in ten years? Twenty years? Lastly, do WordPress developers often have to customize themes and plugins? Any advice would be appreciated.

Drag and drop seems to be the life blood of small creative studios in my area. I'm baffled that some can charge 30-40k for a wix site. Seems like highway robbery to me. IMO I just see the value of drag'n'drop going down but not away completely.
Currently re-platforming an enterprise level site from Magento 1 to a Sapper/Svelte stack with Magento 2 and Wordpress backend. Wordpress was selected because so many marketing employees have made content with it before and it's easy to find a dev with wordpress experience.
So in my small world view, Wordpress has staying power in Creative Studios because it's easy, and it has staying power with Enterprise because so many people have exposure to it plus enterprise level e-commerce platforms such as Magento have a horrid CMS.

Dead meat businesswise. No chance. Too specialized and too general at the same time. Wait 2-5 years and it's sold to Wix or something for possible IP and for upgrades in some dev area.

No matter the market, quality is always rare. Focus on being in the top 5% of what you do (Wordpress, Shopify, React, whatever) and never worry about having your choice of clients.
