    20% commission for every task picked-up. Plus lots of additional time to select a proper task, then apply and negotiate details. Finally, there is a risk that the client will not accept your work, will not pay etc. From the $50 per hour in you have maybe half of it taking into account the above business costs. However, lots of contractors offer much less than $50 per hour... This kind of platform may be profitable for someone working from 3rd world country. For Americans or Europeans, a part-time job in a grocery store seems to be a better option.

    I think the best advice (it was all good) was log in and look around, make sure you can do that job, do what the client is asking, protect your reputation, and in the end, its good for you, and the client! No one wants to waste their time and/or money. Great video! Thank you!

    Man nice content. I was looking into getting my feet wet on platforms like upwork ... after having tested my knowledge with building a few things first.
    Thinking about grabbing any kind of small gig related to HTML CSS JS to get famiiar with the process & then later going deeper with creating whole projects.
    Im really want to build more application types of websites in the long run... though I dont mind / looking forward to starting with just html css or anything I can find ;).

      I have question since you have experience on upwork.
      Do you consider freelance development outside of Worpdress less viable ?
      I mean I plan to have very solid skills in html css js , but I'm not sure ifI want to pursue WordPress.
      I was thinking of more going towards creating web app kind of websites, which can make use of react.
      Then again I question if that kind of approach would be less viable in terms of freelancing.
      I know wordpress is a legit & fruitful path ... Also creating plugins might be fun too ...What about react though ? what would that look like?
      Im assuming that even though react is quite popular , the fact that there isnt a plugin exosystem like worpress can make the whole development process way more time consuming / less productive... Which I wouldnt mind , if it pays well :D & more alligns with my interest.
      Im not just chasing shiny toys ... I think being a react developer + react native is smth that I would prefer. Or rather I like the idea ... Idk ... In the end the most important thing for me is to get started without fail ;) ... l
      Would love to hear your thoughts on that.

    • @MedyGames
      @MedyGames 5 років тому

      Wheter I go with wordpress or react ... or maybe both is smth I struggle with atm :D ... in terms of what to start with. You know after watching this video I might just look for anything html css js related in the near future. If there opportnities that I can solve in a few hours .. that would be perfect to get my feet wet.

    • @TravisMedia

      @@MedyGames You should, especially for those first few 5 star reviews. Get those easy jobs in the bag, and then start to specialize.

    • @TravisMedia
      @TravisMedia  5 років тому +2

      @@MedyGames Aside from WordPress, React would be an excellent pursuit on Upwork. There are far, far many more React jobs than Vue, Django, and even Angular. If you want to go the React route, it is for sure in high demand and you will find endless work on Upwork. As for WordPress, it's always work out there for that too. It's really your preference between the two.

    I love this video travis I'm VERY curious currently right now I'm a web designer working with html/css on building landing pages is there pretty heavy work from employers for that kind of work and would it be better building something from scratch for projects or using wordpress to build them a plugin site?. I'm curious about this question because I saw on wordpress that you need to pay $25 monthly or $300 for a year to get going on getting really good plugins for sites and right now I would prefer building a site from scratch but what do you think would be more effective for great work and more clients?.

    • @TravisMedia
      @TravisMedia  5 років тому

      KidBrave You may be thinking of Wordpress.com which is their paid platform. Check out Wordpress.org which is the open source, free, best Wordpress. So a scratch build is always a good pursuit. Get one of those up first. Then you should research what your target employers are using and then learn that and create that as your next project. Let me know if that helps.

      @@TravisMedia First off thank you very much for replying back to me travis media most developers on UA-cam just heart your message and move on so I greatly appreciate the reply. I have looked over your message and understood everything you where saying sense then I have done some research and found out I would like to pursue wordpress development but I have few questions. Do I need to know how to code in php to create will designed websites for clients on upwork?. Also if not what would you say are the most popular and high paying plugins for wordpress that employers are looking for period?. And something I can do with no prior knowledge of php?.

    • @TravisMedia
      @TravisMedia  5 років тому +2

      @@kidbrave_7673 For WordPress development, you would need to have a basic understanding of PHP as well as WordPress-specific concepts like the Template Hierarchy. PHP is fairly easy to learn. However, there are many WordPress design jobs on Upwork that do not require development, but largely design (PSD) or things like CSS tweaks. But PHP is a large part of WordPress in regards to development. So you could look for just design specific (PSD or landing page design) or CSS specific WordPress jobs and apply for those, but having PHP and an understanding of how WordPress works under your belt would open up many more doors. All that being said, you could look into the Elementor Pro plugin which is not only a page builder but a theme builder that allows you to build entire themes without knowledge of PHP. It's very popular and handles most of the technical work for you.

      @@TravisMedia Good Morning Travis,
      Thank you for giving me the full blown understanding of wordpress and building sites from wordpress using PHP I do plan to learn PHP as I work on freelancing jobs off upwork but currently right now I'm trying to dive completely into wordpress designing and learning PHP as I continue to build my client base up. That is reassuring to know I can find work without knowing PHP I greatly appreciate you letting me know that!. I apologize but what is PSD I dont think I know what that stands for or means?. 😅 And do you have any suggestions who to learn or listen to on learning elementor as a plugin for wordpress on building a template site from scratch?.
