Very proud of this production. It came largely from a 15 day trek with crew in a van seeking out Elders’ memories amongst the Dakota (D-speakers) Oyate. Co-writer was Darren Renville- Assiniboine/Gros Ventre/Dakota. Narrated by Robbie Robertson. All the people appearing have passed.
This was so beautiful, truthful, & heartbreaking. Sad to hear of their passing. Will pray for all of these lovely souls & their loved ones. They'd be happy to know now that many Lakota & other tribes are teaching their language in many tribal schools. I have not seen it myself but I have seen many youtube specials from reservations & heard many people speaking their tribe's language online. Hoping this will become the norm for all tribal schools to learn their own language. I'm hoping things keep healing & numbers in clans keep growing.

I know who Renville was, Lean Man took what was left of the band who didn't stay in Traverse Lake, they moved to Ft. Benton, Montana, they joined the various tribes in the Cypress Hills, the Cypress Hills massacre occured, he along with Sicangu Chief Bears Head went to the Eagle Hills in Saskatchewan, we combined and Cheyenne war chief Mosquito joined us, Bears Head participated in the North West Rebellion he had to flee to Rosebud, Lean Man was pressured by the government to give up his land, he didn't but they took it anyway, he moved to Kawacatoos and he took his people and most of my Sicangu people with him, the rest spread out to Rosebud and Fort Peck. I had a hard time getting to walk through this one, When I was young growing up in South Dakota I had friends that were from the Indians community most of my other class mates found them hard to get along with the , kids from the Rez some how I felt that it was easier to make friends with them, They always tried to fit in at school but when I started to be invited to dinner after school and walk into there homes then I saw the art work and pictures, peace pipe on a stand and then it turned into spending weekends with my lakota friends we would spear big fish on the river and my friend's Grandmother would make a grand meal out of those fish and the home made bread was so good, then church on Sunday. I grew up in a Luthern church in Aberdeen South Dakota, but on the Rez we sang the hymns in Lakota once the Music started I knew the hymn I could sing with the help the of my friends mom. I will never forget how good and kind this family was to me. I am a white boy as white as can be but those summers spent on the Spear fish are days I will never forget.

Thank you for this production. While working on my genealogy I discovered my native American heritage. I'm now re-educating myself in truth in history.
Yeah this isn't the place. These documentaries don't talk about the evils the Indians did to each other or the whites. They wiped each other out in droves. Kidnapped women and children as a tactic of war - which is how they gave themselves smallpox. They were known to torture enemies to death and some tribes were cannibals. They warred endlessly with each other. They allied with the whites against each other. These documentaries give a falsified and laundered history. They say no good about the whites giving them written language, hospitals and schools, and say nothing bad about Indian culture and behavior. This is propaganda.
Each year I find myself looking for more history from before the year 1600 to 1970 n beyond. Ethnography expeditions to the jungle tribes of South America up thru Mexico to southwest pueblo tribes on up to Alaska should be shared. It's Time. All the names of these tribes that where here before the conquistadors n missionarys deserve their own voice. I appreciate these documentaries that include the voices that no longer are here to share their stories from their grandfathers and Grandmothers. Each culture needs to exist to help one another to heal the wounds from the past. Now since we have gone thru these hard times let the healing continue from All Nations Rise and Stand Strong in Prayer. Let the children know the Story from the past. They need to celebrate the life they we're given. Cherish Your Culture. Sincerely appreciate you PBS TY

The production is extraordinary. Wonderful direction and editing here and the the interviews are so important because you show how the people are so so gracious and pure despite the crimes against them.

I mean its part of our history but could you let us talk on our history without including the deeds your grandfather did? There are thousand of stories of "white saviors" who helped our "poor pitiful people" that feel like they need to be included. There are few recountings of telling our stories ourselves and it would be very considerate to not sprinkle those little micro-aggressions into our platform

I remember when I was a little
Girl and we went to the church on the Morongo reservation and we went to the pow wow. It was something that I will never forget. The music and the songs sang… I felt it to my core. The way the songs touch your soul is powerful. Watching this brought this me memories back. More people need to know about these things and make a profound change for the native Americans 🙏🏼

Iam 54yrs old. Im adopted. I recently got my birth certificate from the government. I have information on my mother but not my father. I am 33%American Indian. My mother is from Minnesota. I talked to a man who was also adopted from a reservation due to the law. He is my 4th cousin according to DNA test. He said he is Dakota. I know adoption can be wonderful mine wasn't. My adopted mother died when I was 14. My Heart hurts for being away from my family not knowing who I was or where I come from is the most hurtful. I read " Are you my mother"I always felt like I was that bird.

These accounts are meant to portray the whites and government as monolith of evil against angelic peaceful natives. Reality is far from it. These people were often very brutal, against each other, allying with whites against other tribes, torturing each other to death, cannibalizing their enemies, wiping out tribes, kidnapping women and children as a tactic of war - which is how they got smallpox.

My 4th great grandfather, Francois Labatte (LaBathe) was killed at the Lower Sioux Agency when the fighting began. He was a Native American trader who had a store that did business with the local people. His son in law, Vanoss Robinette and his family (also Native American) were taken hostage by the Sioux who rebelled against the U.S. Government. They were released and sent to Ft. Snelling where they eventually settled in Mendota and most are buried there.
I currently live on fort Snelling in the barracks they converted to apartments....the history of the Dakota people moved me and i feel incredibly sad
When I found out that the law regarding 'Indian Schools' was not stopped until 1978!! I was eighteen years old - which meant that this horrendous practice had been going on my whole life, and I had no idea it was happening. I cried when I finally found out - at the age of 62! I'm 3rd generation Italian and I wasn't taught the language of my grandparents, they wanted to be American. I'm ashamed to be American. The atrocities and genocides perpetrated by America, the rabid racism for anyone that isn't 'white', the inability to do the right thing - in the moment - and if you promise, make treaties, you honor those to the spirit as well as the words of those promises and legal treaties. I am so sorry for what has been done to you. I wish I knew a way to help.

my dad went to one and i never new untill i watched this documentary and looked up the boyhome he was at then it all made sense he said when people would run from the school they would shoot at them and they where mostly treated like prison but had slightly more freedom and where all dressed in same clothes i looked for pics but never found anything else but his name.
Hi Kimber, You couldn't have put how I feel about this any better. I live in the UK, and really didn't know how bad the treatment of the First Nation People was until I made friends on FB with an indigenous lady, started following a few Instagram accounts as I love watching the powwows, and then began to research for myself. It was like going down a rabbit hole! The more I found out, the more disgusted I was, same as you. I too am sorry for what has been done to them. The only way of helping that I have found is to spread more awareness in the UK. Doesn't matter where in the world you are, a light has to be shone on the injustice that has been carried out no matter where. I also have called out some white Americans too on SM. Trust me, a lot of them don't like being reminded. I'm still getting hate posts from something I commented on a couple of weeks ago. The only way to help from my perspective, is telling people about the residential schools etc. Oh, you should look up the Kamloops residential school in Canada. No less than 200 children's skeletons were unearthed. Flowers were laid at the steps of the school, and several indigenous people danced outside of the school. Dancing for those who never got a chance to do so.

My mom was from crow hill, north dakota. N my grandma kunsi was Alvina Alberts. She was speaking on this video. It was good to hear her voice again. My mom sounded just like her. This was a very interesting video. My sister Eunice Davidson had done our family tree. She was named Good star woman after her ancestor.

trying to figure out more about this because my great granfather was a renville ranger fort ridgley called a tokadantee prairie dogs he ended up getting his foot shot off with a muskeet ball and he was going to be hung but was pardoned from it he lived 2 winters with chief other day and he told my grandpa about what had happened,he was starving they wouldnt give any land back and drove away mass amounts of animal where told to eat dirt or grass by the settlers he said people where trying to get food but were shot and more then one person died from this finally one man dared the other to steal eggs when he went in the barn and told his friend i cant stand it anymore and i could die for this he was so upset he started cracking all the eggs and paranoid he would be shot like others he grabbed a gun hanging in the barn. then went to the house and shot everyone inside. then the next day settlers started a witch hunt against all of the people in the camp even though they were starved and loss many they still had to fight. my grandpa was given the option to join the renville ranger he did and like i said lost his foot after he was a sherrif and owner of the old native jail that was burned down he turned it into a hotel. i appreciate and thank all of these wonderfull people for their wisdom and hearing the story of strength makes me feel closer to my ancestors.

Its so sad that those extremely wealthy suits have done this to all the nations of peoples over there.
The very same thing was done to all Scottish, Welsh and Irish long ago.
The Highland clearances where the red coats put mothers with babies out in the snow and were behind a large killing of so many people that spoke with Gaelic talk.
So, so very many of my people were press ganged into indentured servitude and many did not even last the crossing from here to what was called "the new colonies" such a deceptive description.

There were several tribes in the West that did not accept trapping horses and turning them into war machines. And in that case the tribes split in half and oppressed the ones that farmed. Wasn't there ever a time of peace? Globally there are a few instances of communities that have always had the big picture

Screwed up..if things were assured the people would have gotten the food promised..but the gov. never made sure that these criminals weren't stealing .. I understand why they fought back but the best choice for them was to leave ..if they could. The Florida tribes ran away ..hid..fought..we were mostly killed or sent away west but some of us managed to stay hidden for a long enough time to where when we were rediscovered the gov. didn't see us as a threat big enough to continue fighting..the land itself was a reason for our survival..we were so far out in the swamps where no one wanted to live that we were left alone.
The white people also told the Dakota people if they were hungry they could eat their own done as well such depravity thank God the white people are becoming a minority in this country now maybe we will get some justice after all hopefully

I think what's most important is to look for mutual good things for people. I won't abandon love meant to be for the betterment of all..myself included. Not sure if u could it home with a government. They were tribe people. They weren't huge in number , no rights to the land I guess ..... Why they didn't do that to China or Japan?
I find bad what they did back in the days. Languages (and cultures) are lost because of what governments did and still do. Even to minor groups in Europe it happens. My parents weren't allowed to speak Limbourgian at school, my mom still did and they punish her a lot for that. Mam is also the only one of the family that learned her children our own language (but also how to work with wild herbs for illnesses and other things) . I find it pitty that there are not many people anymore that I can talk in my language against.

Beautiful film...I was moved to tears by the end. Although my people are from the Han and Hakka tribes in China, I too felt that I was forced to assimilate in American schools. Thankfully, my elders taught me my native language and raised me with my traditional foods and culture. However, it is not something that is easy to hold onto in these new technological era of cultural sterilization, and I think people from various cultural backgrounds can understand.
China wasn't conquered like native American..Big difference here . China had some form of government!

Amazing documentary. The history of the North American native tribes since the white man invaded is one of suffering & loss. This is the same thing the British did to the Irish. They forbid the Irish to speak their native language. Catholic masses were held in open fields with views all around so that the people could scatter if they saw the British coming as they were forbidden to hold mass. They (the British) apportioned the land per family so that generations had less and less land for each successive generation. During the potato famine between 1845-1852 food that was donated from people around the world sat on British docks and rotted. Over 1,000,000 Irish died from starvation and diseases in these years. Over 2,000,000 left their native lands. Man's inhumanity towards man... nothing but ignorance, hatred and greed. This behavior is the opposite of love and compassion. Shame on all who engaged in harming all brothers and sisters (red,black,brown or white). Their lot has been cast and they shall roam inhospitable lands for what will appear to be an eternity. Time to break the cycle. Time to ask for forgiveness.Time to pray for all that suffered and those whose suffering continues to this day. Time to wake up.

I heard how the British intentionally starved the Irish during the Potato famine; but history books don't tell you that. It wasn't the famine that killed those people, but their own (white) people. But then the second generation of the Irish who came to America, treated Blacks the same way, when they had to compete with them for jobs. In fact, the Irish-lead unions, were initially created just for that. The Native Americans in the south were slave owners and slave catchers -- many whom fought alongside the Confederate Army, and when the South lost, the government forgave the white confederates, but sent the Indians on that long walk that we know as the trail of tears. And the darked-skinned Indians were later classified as Negros, and they have largely been forgotten. The Cherokee Nation broke a treaty with the descendants of their slaves over ten years ago, and it took a court action to re-instate their rights. This is why it is important to know ALL facets of history, because we tend to throw our sympathies to people without knowing the full scale of how, what, and why things happened they way they did.
