When I was a LMG gunner in the Finnish army in 2006 they said that full gas is for war use only and it was forbidden to use. I did as they said and got jams quite often. Not nearly as often than other MG's but still. Almost at the end of my service others said that they've used them at max gas and they didn't have nearly as many problems as I did. Long story short, I think you should use it as max gas Val. Stay safe.
Jam also can be from old ammunition, army love to issue conscript old ammunition for training and exercise 😂 while keeping newer ammunition in storage for war .
You should just adjust it as needed. If it doesn't cycle reliably, you might need more gas through the action. However, overgassing will cause issues and might damage the PK, so don't go from 1 to 3 without testing 2.
V: Places all the gun's internals on dusty gravel ground. Me: On no! Now you have to clean them all! V: Casually wipes bolt on his trousers once, and reassembles the gun. That's an AK design advantage I guess ;)
Thank you for these videos. It is very rare that you see Soviet/Eastern block equipment being showcased in English. Hope you guys got some good hits in with our Swedish AT4s. Much love.
You not only give a very detailed view into the item being showcased, you also give us an in-depth glimpse into weapons not really accessible to the public. That's absolutely amazing. Stay safe, and Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦 !!
You mean the vibrations from firing can bend the barrel so much to cause baffle strikes on the suppressor? Also, reading about PKM the thing of not having a self-disintegrating belt made me thing "damn, do they go around with basically a long chain dangling everywhere??". Didn't know they made those 25 rounds links to alleviate that problem.
The designers of the PKM were not concerned about the weapon’s ability to maintain concentricity with a suppressor mounted. The idea of even suppressing an MG was a wild and far off concept 60 years ago for GPMGs and shouldn’t at all be seen as a slight to the design. If in 10 years someone ends up mounting suppressors to 50 cal MGs it would be just as ridiculous to say “wait this weapon isn’t perfect for suppressor use?!?”
@@jerryle379 for a rifle its pretty average maybe on the larger side. but its definitely a thin barrel for a machine gun. one of the major reasons why it only weighs like 17 lbs
Thats great video. Thx for the tip how not to carry. I was searching for info what is holding cartridge between positions. I now know thats nothing holding them 😂
Glad to see you are doing well my friend! What an awesome machine gun. I carried the M240G in the Marine Corps and it was extremely heavy. I wish we had something lighter like this. It packs a lot of firepower in a small/light package.
I also love the 25 round belts. No drag, but easy enough to police with nothing but a magnet or hands if used in a vehicle. Try doing that with disintegrating links.
NATO adopted the German style push through links which work but inherently make the guns longer/heavier. I’ve always wondered what the advantage was over the Soviet Pull-Out type system and now I see that it’s positive cartridge control. In a push belt the bullet tip is already in the chamber before the link releases, as there is never a lose round that type of jam isn’t likely. In the PKM it’s possible which is interesting. Brownings and Maxims have controlled feed Pull-Out belts by routing the bullet rim down a solid channel in the bolt face. Something not possible in the PKM with its rotating bolt. Amazing videos. Stay safe out there.

Thanks for the video, I like the way you explain all of this. And funny to see that you lay the bolt/parts down in the dust, a sign that russian weapons are performing well under dirty conditions. Keep up the good fight!
Do you have to open the top cover and shift that plate to switch barrel? Seems very cumbersome compared to M240/FN MAG where you can switch in lik 4 seconds.
Great video - love the forgiving tolerances of the Soviet era guns, disassemble resting the parts in gravel and no worries popping them back ! Stay save and thank you for sharing your impressive knowledge.
Great video of a PKM. I have one and really like how your scope mount works. Spot on about those belt being a big mess in drooping. I heard about plastic links but never seen any. If you ever do get any PLEASE do a video on them. Slava Ukraine.
baffle strike. it means when the bullet hits one of the baffles on the suppressor. also you should know that a suppressor adds extra heat to the gun when you shoot it, which means you will have to swap out barrels more often, or shoot less often so this doesn't happen.
Videos are getting better and better, we like this kind of outdoor environment and also if you could include some live fire videos it would be really awesome. Good to hear you back. Stay safe and happy Hunting.
Bit of a long shot, have you seen the UK vz. 59? It is the Czech light machine gun counterpart to the PKM and apparently they are in Ukraine, but I have yet to see anything about them.
I guess it's to overcome the fouling buildup in the gas system as you use the gun. That's why he gives ranges of 0 to 800 rounds fired for position 1, position 2 for up to 1200 etc
How do you use a weapon like this for recon purposes? Seems quite heavy. Either way you seem like you know what you're doing. Stay safe out there. Hope you eventually work yourself out of a job 😅
