According to what I read the reason that Kaoru was killed off was that the parents of the actress who played Kaoru wanted to have her leave as her grade began to slip.

In the same episode, which aired on Jan 10 1975, MAC member Matsuki Haruko (Tomoko Ai) and Gen's friend Takeshi (Yukio Ito) were killed off. Their actors, once their schedule was freed, would appear in Terror of Mechagodzilla (released in April) and Himitsu Sentai Gorenger (first aired in March), respectively.

Here's how I would've worked around Dan being the way he was in this show : Maybe have it be at least semi-justified with Gen starting out as a spoiled prince with little respect for authority and in serious need of discipline. He has tendency to casually insult Dan, which of course pisses him off, leading to him amplifying the intensity of his training sessions.
When Gen does do a good job at training, Dan gives him praise and further encouragement. Over time, the two come to develop a mutual respect for one another, with Dan becoming more like his traditional self and Gen becoming more selfless over the course of the series. I would also have Leo mention Astra early on in the series rather than just out of the blue halfway when he actually does show up.
I have been waiting a long time to post this message.

Isn't Leo and Asta royalty from their home planet?
This helps with your take. A spoilt prince with a raw talent for martial arts (and probably never lost a single fight back home) faces reality on earth and has to face with a veteran Ultraman losing patience with his poor attitude.

He was also not fond of the infamous jeep training scene and tried to get the director to stop after a few takes because he feared he might accidentally hurt Ryu Manatsu.

I really love the Giras brothers from the first two episodes. They look so cool. They were very formidable, which I felt made them very memorable opponents for Leo.

    Some fun facts:
1: The design of Ultraman Leo is actually inspired by Alien Valky, the villain from the last episode of Ultraman Taro.
2: The actor of Commander Black was a huge fan of Ultraman Leo show back then, then the TV crew agreed to let him act as a super villain for the rest of the show. He named his son Tooru, his daughter Kaoru, and his dog Leo.
3: The show had some real budget issues, as you can see in the second half of the show. That's also why Leo doesn't have much laser attack, a lot of his finishers are physical. However, many fans appreciate that because Leo is more of an actual fighter to them after being trained harshly by Dan and suffering through so many stuffs. Personally, I think Leo's fights/choreography is the most professional and enjoyable to watch.
Ultra Leo has some sweet moments, but overall it's a much darker story comparing to Taro. I watched this show when I was soooo little, but in fact as growing up I found this show more and more inspiring to me.

The reason why MAC and Gen’s friends died in episode 40 was because of the slump in viewership and the oil crisis in Japan. It prices skyrocketed, affecting production and measures had to be taken to reduce production costs, such as cutting back on regulars.
Also, the reason why MAC doesn't seem to helpful is because Leo's enemies are set up in such a way that there is nothing humans can do about them. This was also written in Leo's proposal.

As for Ultraman Leo I love the idea that he is known for his skill in martial arts, does not really rely on beams to finish of foes too much. This also great for showing the character needing to train intensivly and adapt to the enemy. If not, if Leo looses earth is doomed. Leo doesn't want to loose another planet.

I watched Ultraman Leo in 2015 on Crunchyroll, I considered it to be the Kamen Rider Black of it's time. The darker tone is a good touch this was made to counter the child oriented nature of Ultraman Taro to help the struggling ratings at the time. The mid 1970's was a bit a rough time for the Ultraman series and the giant monster movies in general due to the first oil shock in late 1973, the production giant monsters was becoming less popular, more animated (anime) was being produced (prior before Japan's anime boom in the early 1980's.) Competition was such as the Kamen Rider series getting the upper hand and the debut of Super Sentai in 1975. And the Japanese cinema crash in mid 70's. Leo is considered to be the last of golden age of Ultraman series. Overall it is a great entry.
Mr. Kaiju no Kami I have a few questions to as about the Ultraman series. Please excuse me if this has been ask.
    1. Will mill creek release The Ultraman aka Ultraman Joneus next or go straight to Ultraman 80?
    2. In most of the 2010's the Ultraman series 2010's episodes where mostly 25 episodes. Why is the Ultraman series right now mostly 25 episodes?
    3. Will the series return to the 50 episode format?
    4. Are you planning to do a review on the Showa era Kamen Rider series before Black? Such as the first Kamen Rider, Amazon, Stronger, Super 1 for example.

      1. Mill Creek hasn't said, but given 80 doesn't come out on BD in Japan until later on this year, I wouldn't expect it from MC any time soon.
      2. I believe the reason Ultra series these days are 25 episodes is due to budgets. Plus, it allows them to have more time to work on them.
      3. No idea, but I hope not. I like it as is.
      4. I'm waiting to see what Shout! Factory does before I tackle any more Kamen Rider. When I was planning to do the original series Shout! announced the license for it, which put an end to that plan.

Ultraman Leo was... interesting. I can’t say I dislike it, nor can I say it’s among my favorites.
I really Did like Gen and how unlike most Ultras he fails to get the Monster and Alien the first time and has to do some sort of training to get better. And I didn’t really mind Dan being a tough mentor to him. Though sometimes they make little sense.
The music I thought was pretty good though I think the 2nd opening theme for Leo was used a bit to much for my liking.
The effects and monsters aren't too bad. Though it has probably my least favorite roster out of the showa era since many of them felt kinda similar or didn’t had that much creativity. Compared that to Ace which has my favorite roster since it’s among the few shows to have the monsters based of different motifs like animals or yokai.
I didn’t really felt the episodes where too formulaic as they did change the style like with the Horror series and the Saucer aliens.
And there were Episodes that I did like though there were some episodes that I felt where way to silly that they kinda clash the tone of the series.
Though for me I felt the weastest aspect was MAC as I barely remember most of them due to how very limited their roles where as it was mostly centered around Dan and Gen. easily the weakest as far as Monster Teams go.
Overall I did enjoy this series though not as much as Return, Ace, Seven, or even Taro. but I am curious if we’ll get a release of Ultraman 80 anytime since there is aot I like to talk out that.

I thought that was intentional. UltraSeven was a very dramatic series. The writers seem to have taken the final UltraSeven episode as a blueprint for Dan's character.
At the end of UltraSeven he had to return home due to all of his injuries, leaving his love interest and his comrades. So at some point before Ultraman Leo he got back to Earth, joined a new Defense Force only to get injured all over again and trapped in his human form (again) forcing him to rely on the Ultraman equivalent of a untrained civilian to do his job for him.
After that the Ultraman Leo series even makes a plot point about Dan/Seven's failure to find his love interest after his return to Earth.
Ultraman Leo feels to me like a continuation of UltraSeven where you get to find out that Dan/Seven got to suffer even more later.

I imagine because maybe Seven lost someone dear to him and did not want Leo to fall into the same fate.
Most likely it was his wife, not the love-interest from the UltraSeven show, but his actual wife who is an Ultra, and the mother to Ultraman Zero.
I assume his wife died in a war when Zero was still a baby, and it hurt Seven really bad. Realise that he could not raise Zero because of the psychological trauma, he gave Zero to Father of Ultra and Seven left the Land of Light for the time being to recover from his inner pain.

Just finished watching the whole series yesterday. Here's my thought:
The first few episodes seem too formulated to me; Leo got beaten by a monster => Seven brutally trained him => he got a new technique to beat a monster. Then we get into the horror series, which are pretty good in my opinion. Not as good as horror element in Ultraseven, but above my expectations. After that, we get into the following episodes and Japan Masterpiece Folklore. These episodes are mostly somehow childish, contrary to the series which supposed to be in a darker theme. For the Terror of the Saucer Race episodes, I found them kinda repetitive and boring. It feels like these episodes were an addition that the producer made to met the episodes count. Even the monsters look like they were lazily made.
And now it comes to the kid name Tooru that I felt like he's a depressed, angsty Kenny of the franchise and Gen becomes a babysitting version of Gamera. I mean, there are a lot of episodes which have Gen attempt to cheer him up, then he got depressed and angsty again in the few episodes later. Why can't he be as competent as that kid from Ultraman Jack?

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork

Understandable. I think to an extent a darker tone with a higher body count can work, and the episode with Silver Bloome is extremely underrated in that regard, as Silver Bloome's the only kaiju in the franchise's history to single-handedly kill off an entire science-military group, along with many other prominent characters up to that point.
But with that said, there are points where the darker tone can go overboard and leave several episodes with a mean-spirited aftertaste. Dan's treatment of Gen as a mentor is often uncharacteristically harsh and almost Full Metal Jacket-esque, such as the several instances of verbal abuse and the infamous jeep chase.

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  3 роки тому +3

      SPOILER WARNING:
My issue with the Silver Bloome episode is everything feels forced as if shock value is the only thing it has going for it. It doesn't help that right out of the blue Gen and Toru are living with some lady they apparently knew for a long time and there was no real transition to get to that point. It's just they see the names of their loved ones on the board as confirmed dead and then it jumps to some time later and they're living happily as if nothing happened at all. Also, why does no one bring up Gen's previous job working as part of MAC? It's like MAC never existed at all.
I preferred the way they killed off Go's girlfriend in Return as at least it had more depth to it even if the ending to the story kind of ruined it.

People can get punished from voicing out their beliefs, even if those were meant to be lawfully granted rights. Hometown is no longer the same, some people never being able to see some friends and family. No one could really help you. With multiple insurmountable hardships coming wave after wave, people understandably bend and twist to their own survive/benefit.
Leo is like a fantasy world/alternative reality where justice is served and in reality there ain't much any. One thing in common is that despite mulitple hardships, some people would continue to hold on their beliefs/morality where others have already given up. That is why it is my most loved Showa. For me it was inspiring, don't give up and continue to be a good person despite hardships.

I know you decided not to mention that infamous episode (possibly to avoid spoilers) but I feel it needs to be mentioned due to the trivia that came after the episode aired.
SPOILERS to anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled.
There was this infamous episode where the entire MAC were killed off after MAC's Space Station was destroyed by a monster called Silverbloome unleashed by Black Commander (in fact it was Black Commander's debut episode). Gen/Leo was the only survivor while Seven/Dan's fate is left ambiguous, although we find out later he survived however how he survived is never explained. According to the Ultraman Mebius novel, During Silverbloome's attack, he was teleported to the Land of Light by the Mother of Ultra as she healed the wound he suffered from Giras Brothers' attack and presented him the fixed Ultra Eye, allowing him to become Ultraseven once more.
However In Mamoru Uchiyama's Leo manga series, which is part of Uchiyama's long running Ultraman manga franchise he was doing in the 70s, Ultraseven was killed during the genocide in his human form and stayed dead for quite a while. Eventually, he was revived sometime later in the Battle of the Ultra Brothers arc from the manga series "The・Ultraman" when the Ultra Warriors launched an all out attack against the Alien Jackal army, with Seven revived alongside his Ultra Brothers comrades that were killed by King Jackal as they fired their finisher rays and ended his reign of terror. If that sounds familiar that's because an abridged version of that arc adapted into the 2015 animated Ultraman short," The・Ultraman: Jackal vs. Ultraman".

Ultra seven is a great warrior but he's not winning father of the year award anytime soon and he's not a good leader at all.

SOoooo..............I have to wait 30 hours for MY #1 special favorite ULTRA series/Ultraman to get............dissed? Even though I've seen the entire series several times, I still can't watch THIS one and NOT go back!! Got the sets and STILL wind up re-watching certain episodes over and over again.....ESPECIALLY the first four episodes! Gotta put this out there about the booklet, though...........WHY ON THIS EARTH would they give credit to officer Suzuki, murdered in the only episode we see him in, but NOTHING on officer Aoshima (Yuichi Yanakizawa), who appears about as regularly as they get/survive in THIS show! Ichiro Aoshima ALWAYS made my eyes pop because of his antagonistic yet brotherly relations to Gen.....THE one too quick to say, 'How can we work with THIS guy!' He was a cornerstone of the doomed MAC for me! ESPECIALLY in episodes 10 and 14! Just learning NOW that Mill Creek WILL bring us the original GRIDMAN in a set in August! DOUBLE WOW!!!!

The booklet is very annoying in its presentation. Too many spoiler moments talked about in the character and monster sections. As for Aoshima, sorry, but the TAC members became a rotating door for me that I don't even know who that was. The only one I knew was the girl who played Katsura in Terror of MechaGodzilla, but she doesn't do anything significant in this show at all.
However, if it helps, I did enjoy this show a lot more this time around than when I watched it on Crunchyroll a few years ago. :-p

From the video, it seems that Leo is not the Japanese Blu ray source, but the HD source repaired many years ago. You can see that there are many black lines beating on the screen. This is not in the Japanese version of Blu ray film source. If this is true, it will reduce points. Of course, it can also be said that this is not Blu ray.
