Shoot local and tripod free with nature photography

  • If you had to shoot only local and go tripod free for all your images, could you succeed in making portfolio worthy work? Nature photography doesn't have to be restricted to far off exotic locations, or include every bit of kit under the sun. In this video I venture out with minimal gear and come away with three respectable new images and all from my local area.

You are amongst one of my favourite wildflowers Simon. I love dandelions, in the flower stage as well as seed heads.... I refer to them as taraxacum, to confuse viewers,.... because soooo many people see them as noxious weeds that they try to destroy.... Tripod free is a nice freedom indeed... "not quite an abstract, but definitely not your typical study". makes it an expressive image 🙂 Thank You Simon for another lovely visit in a local park

dandelions are one of my most favourite subjects to photograph - from full clock heads to ones there are just one or two seeds remaining after the wind has blown through. as a subject they offer so much right throughout their life cycle, both as flora and a flowering yellow home for small bugs, etc.
the cow parsley image is simply beautiful :-)

wowser! Such simplicity yet absolutely not the stock images I am seeing over and over at this time of the year. Stunningly etherial and cotton wool(y). On my local walk (plenty to choose from here in Edinburgh) we've loads of dandelions (most gone to seed) and apart from the "everyone does it' shots I tend to ignore them. how wrong am I? I've tried to photograph cow parsley in the past with very little success but now I'm inspired and I don't have to get "that" image that I think everyone wants! You are a genius Simon. Thank you

Nice to see you “not” using a tripod. I often bring and use my tripod for low light woodland shots, but a also often stop to take a quick hand held at interesting subjects and many times the hand held shots are my favorites. Simply beautiful. Tremendous sympathy and deep connection with the plants themselves.
Having used Pentax 67 and 645 between late 1970s and late 1990s, I have real love for those cameras. And still use a number of Pentax 645 lenses with tilt shift adapters. The 75mm f2.8 645 actually seems a bit better than Fuji gf options. But the point of this long comment is to ask why you have not switched to the GFX. I can imagine a number of reasons but would be interested in your thinking. I mostly use the 100S but much much prefer the controls on the 50S.
Again great video. Peaceful and inspiring.

I've been a fan of botany and botanical photography for years and always love making new images of plants. My reason for not switching to Fuji is in part lack of available funds right now and I'm not a big fan of the Fuji DVF. If I had the funds, I would probably go for Hasselblad.

Just absolutely beautiful images Simon. My favorite is the one of the parsley. It has such a painterly feel to it with a stylistic nod to an Oriental artform. Damned inspirational! Of course, being here in Wisconsin, USA, and having pulled some dandelions this morning during an outing in a local woodland (along with some garlic mustard) because they're not native, I may have a bias against the dandelions!

Dandelion flowers...The plant is able to learn. When wild, the flower is several inches high. In lawns, when mowed, each new flower will be shorter. Eventually down to a button flat on the ground
