You're certainly more confident when it comes to taking on welding jobs than me and I used to be a mechanic, you're doing a great job, well done Matt 😎👍
Total respect to a bloke outside on his drive , with a grinder , tin-snips, DIY welder and some pattern panels even having a go. The job you've made looks absolutely spot on. Good luck with the next stage Matt 👍
Brave effort Matt! Keep up the good work. A few suggestions: - 1mm 'plasma' cutting discs might give a less jagged finish to your panel cuts. - Get some decent RPE including particulate masks to wear when grinding/stripping/sanding and a fitted half face mask with vapour filters when spraying/using aerosols. You only have one pair of lungs and should set a good example for others you inspire to have a go. - A welders apron or overalls might be a good idea to avoid chance of nasty burns from melting clothing to yourself too.
Well done, especially in this weather! I think I`d have been inclined to cut the outer wing before welding up the inner one, to ensure the inner & outer arch mated up properly, but we all do things different!
Great to see incremental progress on the W123, but this job was a big step forward. Quite a daunting job at the outset, but you have confidence in your gear and yourself enough to get it done step by step, all while giving us a great educational video. Inspiring stuff Matt!
Well done Matt, always impressive what you achieve on your driveway, very inspiring. Looking forward to the next vid. This project is my favourite of yours.
Excellent from title to outro! To produce work like this in a freezing driveway is amazing. To see a talented amateur tackle work that many professionals would run away from is terrific. Can't wait to see that outer wing going on. Matt, many thanks.
Huge level of respect for you Matt! Great job on the cutting and welding. I did everything myself on the quattro restoration, except welding. This is a great series, hope to see the W123 back on the road all shiny and new.
I have to echo the other comments regarding being a rather brave chap tackling a job like that on the drive, in the middle of weather like we have had lately. Coming on nicely Matt, and welding from both sides is going above and beyond! Going to be plenty of strength in that. But again, well done for tackling such a job outside like that, I have a barn and a four post lift to use, and even with them i have given up such work until spring now.
Great to see the old girl getting some love, it was a vid on it which brought me to the channel. Not too big a list now, should be pretty quick, ready for the summer shows. Not sure what year tho'... 🤔 😁 👍
Well done and kudos for doing this at this time of the year. Looking forward to the outer panel job and that will be a bit harder to do, judging on my personal experience. But, once done, it’ll be very rewarding
There's an immense satisfaction in doing jobs like this with limited non-professional kit at one's disposal. Good progress. One question, the mat you used to kneel on. What's it called? I too have been out in the cold but brilliant winter sunshine on my knees working inside my MG's wheel arches. My old knee joints do not like being in that position too long. They are old though and have been abused over many years cycling but also from kick starting ancient Motor Cycles stubbornly refusing to start. Pleased with the end result though.
That's a nice tidy job for working in those conditions and that welding mask/hood combo is ideal for the job, wish I'd had those instead of the big bulky mask when doing this job on the Maestro. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the repairs as you work your way through them.
So entertaining to watch!, I'm sure you could be a stand up comic!😂, your enthusiasm is great, I have been in that same situation as you outside in the cold & damp doing bodywork many a time!,& will probably do many more!, just so you know that is the wheel tub area, inner & outer wheeltub panels, so the inner wheeltub meets the boot floor & the outer wheeltub panel meets the wing.👍
Doing a great job Matt to remove the old under seal I use an old wood chisel. It gets rid of the major parts then I hit it with the grinder I hate welding upside down. I was working outside it's 3degs C lol I decided I would come in and have tea break.👌👍
Fantastic work Matt! Seeing you working outside in the cold gives me the motivation to roll around on my driveway and get my fleet up to scratch. No excuses 😂
I think Hubnut should be taking notes re the welding here... outside in the elements, just giving it a go And getting it done bit by bit. Mega thumbs up from me. I bet you could taste the rust, even a disposable covid mask would stop you inhaling rust/crap.
Just a tip Matt, you should try using a cutting disc instead of a grinding disc when cutting out metal. A cutting disc is a lot thinner so cuts easier, faster and creates less sparks. Hopefully this will help with grinder fatigue 👍🏼 Love the honest content
@@furiousdriving it looked too thick to be a cutting disc, normally a cutting disc is only a couple of millimetres thick. Sorry just thought it would help you out
Be interesting to see how much original merc you have left when this is all done! You're a braver man than me for taking on all that welding and fabrication!
The last time I saw anyone wearing protective headgear like that Matt was on the roof of reactor No4 at Chernobyl 😂 and you looked just as scary. Good to see you back doing the W123 again 👌🏻 and yeah definitely a full cafetière day , gosh your so posh 😁😉👍🏻.
It's a race against time - will Furious get the 123 ship shape before the British weather claims it on behalf of the scrap man. The task is like painting the Forth Bridge but we are all rooting for him against the odds. I watch Half Ass Customs doing this sort of stuff and he has a heated workshop with every tool known to man so well done Matt for persevevance alone!!
Every time I see you working on this rust bucket, I thank my lucky stars that I own a Volvo 740 constructed of Zincrometal! That said, you are making progress on it. Keep at it, Matt! 😉
Great video, I've actually just bought an 84 W123, just as rusty as yours! Where do you buy the panels from? I'm in Canada, can't find anyone that ships here.
Another excellent video, but please can you start laying the paint on in 4 or 5 thin layers, it will dry quicker, etch into the metal better and give a much better finish.
Very impressive bodging Matt! I need to change the chassis on my disco 3 soon so I need all the motivation I can get! I do everything outside in the pissing rain as well
I have been saying ages that I'd love to learn how to weld a car up and that I may just buy a cheap car that needs welding as a good way to learn. Then my day van fails an MOT and needs a stack of welding. Great opportunity! Errr no, I chickened out. So I take my hat off to you Matt for your have a go attitude. Looking forward to the next instalment.
@@furiousdriving am enjoying your restoration of this beauty - we have the same - 230E auto, petrol green (although wrongly, if beautifully, resprayed slightly lighter) - I drive it almost every day and it fills me with a strange joy - hope you (eventually) appreciate the same...
Hi Matt, came here to watch the mondeo and have been watching all your previous videos now, great work, are you welding using gas or are you going gasless?
Great you are working on the Merc, my favourite :) I continue to prefer your repair and car review videos to Hubnut! BTW, I like the 4k quality, is that new for your channel? (I may have not noticed but think it was 1080p before)
I have just built a retractable carport roof to give me a second double garage space in a similar position to where you work on the merc, I had a custom tarp made for just a few hundred, would make working in that area much nicer
Great job but the only thing that gives me the fear. Get the rear door open when using the grinder. One slip and the door has a slot in it rather than the grinder slipping into fresh air
Because you're such an influencer (😛), I bought a Draper 70043 wilder from your affiliate store. Have you had any problems running it on a 13A plug? The manual is very insistent that it should have a 32A plug! 😁
fyi, I recently fitted a pair of front wings to mine and they were a terrible fit. iI wish i just used them to repair the old ones or spent the time finding genuine Mercedes wings. You have been warned keep up the good work!
you cannot beat a session with a welder, i think i may invest in your welder, seems to be a better one that the clarkes unit we have, that seems to be a pain in the arse for spares. Are you using Gasless wire?
That was a really good job. The Merc 123 seems to be extremely well served with replacement part panels. Always a good thing when dealing with a specimen cursed with a frilly bottom!
You're a brave man tackling all that, especially outside at this time of year. Such an inspiration to us lazy gits.

Very inspiring watching you tackling a job like that in the winter outside, well done so far Matt 👏🏻👏🏻
Never before have I been so excited to watch a man dressed as Darth Vadar welding things upside down in the freezing cold
Incredible work Matt, I personally wouldn't have the patience to sit out in the cold lining up the arches😅. Massive respect to you!
