I am impressed by your system. I am almost 7 hrs north of you so planting green into cover crops with anything remotely close to your biomass level is much more risky and requires late planting. The rare farmer who has done that here has unfortunately paid dearly the past couple years. Part of your cover crop cost I put into a little more residuals. Also not warm enough to use paraquat as a burndown. That would be nice. Great explanation of your program. Thank you!
I agree with Matt 100% on corn and the allopathic effect. I get everyone telling me the same thing about planting corn behind rye. I’ve done it for the last 3 years and my yields have gone up each year. Weed control is getting better every year and my fertilizer needs are going down each year.

cover crops are good for weed control we have waterhemp up here in missouri, it helps, yes always start clean use pres then plenty of rsiduals, we fall sspray then spray corn knee tall so canopy can occur , degree, helix, lexr, agrron,few we spray with helix will burn your corn, we mix with roundup and atrizine sometimes, with wet sol and the way in order you mix is also important
Up here in southwestern Ontario Matt the outlawed paraquat and they seemed outlaw everything that actually does work

Question. If a person is trying to wear out the seed bank, are we better off to keep the seeds from germinating with residuals, or kill the weeds as they come up? Which would reduce the seed bank the most?
We cover crop as well, and try to surpress the weeds before they start, but i feel that same cover crop is reducing residual chemical effectiveness. And not as needed with the cover crops coverage.
I don’t know. That’s the million dollar question. I do think cover crops reduce the effectiveness of residuals as they inhibit the chemical reaching the soil

It may take years. Make sure it doesn't hurt commercial plants in the genome/ family/ high school biology thing. But Monsanto did it .

Cover crops have there downfall you should never plant corn after ceral rye its got toxic trait which affects it, it cover crop gets too tall it can be hard to plant into, i see spot in your fields where this has happened, , also getting it planted on time sometimes because cover crop keep it wetter which make it hard to plaant maybe that way you replanted 3 times, also its a cover for insects which is why you need so much insecticide, trust me if been farming for 40 years
A lot of what you said is incorrect. Rye is not allelopathic to corn. I’ve been planting behind rye for years with great success. Allelopathy gets falsely blamed in many cases for what is a nutrient deficiency due to the breaking down of the cover crop residue. This can be prevented by changing how fertilizer is applied.
Cover crops help dry the soil out to plant. The first couple of years after transitioning, your soils can be slower to dry out until you get your soil structure fixed. My fields don’t hold water now like they did when just no tilling or conventional tilling.
Cover crops can create problems with some pests as I’ve documented, such as slugs and three corner alfalfa hoppers at planting and emergence. But in season, there are no more problems with insects than there is any other type of system.
When you do crop rotation does the blend of the cover crop change depending on what you are planting in that could that year or does changing the cover crop blend make any difference??

Depends on your climate. Here in TN 15” corn is way too narrow of a row spacing for most years. Not enough air movement between rows in our hot weather and the corn would burn up. 30” is much better suited to our region. Even 20-22” corn is too narrow here

My understanding is the efficiency is up in the high 90% range for identification and can output exact maps of weed locations now.
Definitely not opposed to it. I would have to see a demonstration before I would believe the effectiveness of it.
I agree with the animals spreading seeds of weeds and such one big example of that is wild asparagus we have it growing in the road ditches usually under power lines because the birds eat the seeds and sit on the power lines and poop the seeds out and a new asparagus patch will start and also I believe that waterfowl carry fish eggs and spread them to other bodies of water I have seen many man made ponds that never had any fish planted in them start having fish usually like pearch and bluegills and bullheads

Matt, I haven't farmed since 2012. I had an idea back then that i mentioned and people just shrugged. Larvin kills insect eggs. I lived through the beet army crisis during the boll weavil removal program. Why not talk to a university about sterilizing the female plant. Or the male , as it is weaker. I'm just making a suggestion as I am retired now, but your videos remind me of my hatred of pig weeds. PS. I farmed in colquitt county ga. They started out so easy to kill. Little did we know that they were learning. LOL.
I think there’s something in the works that sterilizes pigweed. I’ve heard rumors of it but I think commercialization is a ways off. For it to work effectively it would have to be a boll weevils type eradication and I don’t know if something like that would fly nowadays. There was a lot of pushback from farmers over being forced to fund the boll weevils eradication program
