A word of knowledge: *Bungie hated the books*
The Bungo Lords, despite being nerds themselves, often disregarded the books during the game's production, and outright retconned the OG Halo Novel in Halo Reach. 343i, on the other hand, has such a massive hard-on for the Expanded Universe that their games are incomprehensible at times if you aren't a well read Halo fanatic.
Keep this nugget in mind for your research, ye who hath endured the fucking penance crusade that is Halo 2 Legendary.
Even if you are a Halo fanatic 343 is incomprehensible, retconning Humans into not being for-runners was a dumb idea,

Eh Bungie only hated it because it meant they weren't able to turn the series into a Marathon rehash. The expanded universe is way better and more interesting than just going "chief and security officer same person??!!11!1" imo. The Forerunner Trilogy is on par with Lord Of The Rings in terms of quality and expansiveness imo.

I think Bungie was wrong to ignore the books so much and 343 was wrong to make their game narrative overly dependent on them for context.

I know how cancer in the family feels, it really threw me backwards last year & I know how difficult it is to put creative stuff out there & try to save face in front of people during that sorta thing. I'm just glad you've got yourself on your feet now, & I don't doubt she'd be proud, I'm excited to see what you put out this year!

The comment about the Hunters not getting their scary image from Halo 1 was so funny to me because, they actually did. You weren't supposed to know to shoot them in the back yet so them getting one shotted by precision weapons didn't come up much on your first playthrough. But playing Reach first definitely ruins that.
Honestly, after watching all your previous halo work, I have to say that they weren't bad takes. Coming at them from a blind playthrough perspective, I would come to similar conclusions. For halo ce the levels do repeat far too much, the vehicle physics are terrible, and some of the weapon sandbox could use some work. No disagreements for Halo 2. For Halo 3, the first half does fill like filler. Doesn't help that the movement feels slower (like moving through butter), probably to the FOV. The cortana segments stopping the pace doesn't help either. The story also felt like a letdown from 2 as well, and an autosave feature would not hurt due to the terrible checkpoints. Overall, these were not bad takes, just good criticism. If everyone ignored the flaws and just fanboyed all time, the game's creators wouldn't feel the need to innovate and keep the annoying features of the predecessors, which doesn't help anyone in the long run.
I've gone down a rabbit hole of, "What would Halo have looked like if Bungie didn't have to make time cuts?" and holy crap...
I completely understand why Halo 3 feels so weird. It feels completely disconnected from Halo 2's campaign, but it's an obvious continuation of it. I can't explain why, but it just feels so dramatically different. Playing through Halo 2 and then going immediately into 3 usually gives me this feeling.
I know their original intention was to have all the Prophets die by the end of Halo 2, and I'm assuming the Covenant would have likely not been a main threat in Halo 3 at all. My guess is Halo 3 was originally scoped to be all about the Flood and the Gravemind, but they ended up splitting the game in half between Truth and the Flood. It overall felt like it didn't give weight to either villain.
It's really sad. I'd love to see a fully fleshed out redoing of the original Halo series as per Bungie's original ideas.

It’s completely understandable losing a mother is the worst in my opinion. It’s my biggest fear because I know it’s going to happen but I’m scared of what comes after.
Speaking from personal experience, a loved one going through cancer sucks and can hit people in a lot of different ways. I remember feeling weird that it wasn't something that felt bigger, more like something that had to be accepted and dealt with going forward for our family. Nevermind Halo opinions, I'm just glad that you're doing better now.
I lost my father in the end of November, unfortunately I didnt get to say goodbye to him, I very much understand how it can be being snappy and jaded towards everyone, cause you feel so hurt by life with no real villain to have that anger towards.
Me and my dad didnt end in the best terms that I wouldve wanted, I lived with him and took care of him this last year. During that was really rough, his leg and his heart was very bad, I knew he wasnt going to make it out of this year, but I couldnt process that last year was approaching the end so quickly. I know hed be proud of me, I could just get out of bed in the morning and hed already be proud of me.

dunno, I'm at 27 minutes and i think these takes are totally fair so far. there's a few things I disagree with but they're extremely minor, like environments being boring. The actual level design comments are completely valid.

Another thing to note is that sense these videos seem like they are based on mcc in It's early years. It has been updated quite a lot sense then and most of the issues addressed have been fixed.

I gotta say though: The main issue with the original trilogy's bad writing (IMO) comes down to Halo 2's development.
Halo: CE's story was always going to be a bit rushed. It was setting up an entire universe all at once with two different enemy factions. I think they needed a game set before Halo: CE (I know we have Reach but I mean one that was set before and came out before Halo: CE) to set up The Covenant first before introducing the Flood.
Aside from that, Halo 2 was really where the story took a nosedive- not for a lack of planning or writing skill, but due to game developmental issues. They had to cut a third of the story of Halo 2 carrying it over into Halo 3. Halo 2 was supposed to end with the Arbiter and Chief slaying the final Prophet and stopping the firing of the rings back on Earth (the Ark was originally just on Earth in Halo 2's story).
Halo 3, presumably, would have been a full-fledged story focusing entirely on the Flood which would have been better IMO.
Halo 2's story just doesn't work being cut into pieces, and I think the entire story of the Flood and the Gravemind suffered in Halo 3 as a result of having the third act of Halo 2's story shoved into that game as well.
There's a lot of emotional build up in Halo 2, especially with the Arbiter's story. To have that just completely come to a halt and his character get relegated to a side character in the Halo 3 campaign just doesn't feel right at all.
I hope you're doing ok. It's heartbreaking that your mother had cancer. It's really hard to say goodbye, and this is coming from someone who lost his grandfather to lung cancer. No matter what, I'll support you and your content from Nebraska

You wanna know something funny? Halo's levels are actually a HUGE improvement. The level design in Bungie's previous FPS series, Marathon, is so legendarily bad that I struggle to even put it into words for someone who hasn't played those games for themselves. If I had to describe it, I'd say it's kind of like being lost in an MC Escher lithograph while overdosed on LSD, and most of the time there's a hurricane going on, except the rain is made of alien bullets. Marathon Infinity in particular is almost fucking unplayable; I only beat it because I'm stubborn and petulant.
Colony ship for sale is one of the best examples of actively hostile game design.

Around 26:32, the "shafted" cutscene will kick in if you get here, before you enter, make sure you have an overshield that is full. Now, right at 26:32, don't go back that way, but just walk of the ledge on the left facing the path you should be taking. Go to the right and go through the door and pick up the invisibility, get through the next area and don't be seen by anyone, your invisibility will stay active until you get to the cartographer, it makes a whole lot of enemies de-spawn, yes the way back up will be also a fight, but no, there won't be "double the enemies", you skip the entire way down section, i found this when i was still a kid! I hate this level and it shaved about 20 minutes of playtime of this horrible mission! Try it next time, let the shafted cutscene play, face towards the way you should be taking but keep standing on this platform, have an overshield, look down, and just walk of the ledge, it is easy, yes the overshield will be gone, but you won't get hurt!

Honestly I don't care if those Halo reviews were bad. Was it disappointing to see? A little, but it didn't make me hate you or your content. And its especially understandable given what you were going through. I can't say I went through the exact same thing, but I lost three grandparents last year. One to Covid, one to Alzheimer's, and another to Cancer. Its NEVER easy, especially when you don't take that time to be with them, or are just not able to be with them in their final moments.
Trav is 1000% correct: Make sure to spend time with your loved ones and make sure they know how much you love them, because life can throw a curveball, or several, at any time.
At least you admitted and you where too harsh and apologized. That’s very big of you. Also thanks for giving halo another chance it’s a great series

i'll never stop saying every halo is just about as fun as the others, as they all have some flaws or excellent points and while i still think halo 4's story was the best, especially compared to infinite as while it had nice moments it wasn't really a story. the only things that actually happen and aren't lore dumps are, 'Chief gets a new blue girlfriend, fight monke, and pilot sad but nothing actually *happens* and i hope they can give us something good with infinite dlc

I wanna say I started watching your Channel about the same year as those Halo Videos.
I do remember watching the Reach and OG Halo review and simply kinda stopped. Not because I have an attachment to Halo and felt insulted. But because I really don't like reviews that come across as "Drainingly Cynical". Hell someone made a review last year that I could describe as such, to an IP I love, but I wasn't upset that they disliked what they experienced. But it got to the point where it felt like they were starting to make up reasons of why they didn't enjoy it, and it just sucked the life out of me. I won't name name's cause I don't wanna stir up any trouble.
But knowing the context as to why those Videos came out the way they did? I'm genuinely sorry for what you and everyone had to endure. My mother had a family member that went through something similar, although I wasn't close to them, I could tell despite her frustrations, their death still affected her a fair bit.
I rambled enough though. But if it means anything. Thank you for being open with us, and I hope things work out for you this year and then some.

Regarding the copy paste rooms/corridors of halo CE, as much fun as I have had with the game and enjoying it as it was new... Always have hated that "design".
Hot take: it is always ethical to hate on That Levels. i.e. that recurring theme where nearly every game in the Halo series has a level that's both garbage and played through twice for some awful reason (hence That Levels, every ounce of malformed grammar intended).

I love how you, a newcomer to the series, picked up on the Halo: CE anniversary graphic flaws right away. That kinda blows my mind, and really makes me wonder how nobody working on that project saw the same issues that you did.
Also the lightning in some instances is so dramatically different that it completely changes the feeling of the levels.
It might be because there's not a single talented person working at 343.

Play Halo CE on legendary difficulty. The levels won't feel as repetitive as the variety comes in enemy placement and how you plan your attacks ahead.
You stop worrying about the graphics and level design and you start worrying about the gameplay.
You missed the part where I say I went back and played it on legendary and grew more forgiving of the game.

I thought Infinite was good, and 4 was good when it focused on Chief. Everything else about 4 (and all of 5) sucked ass
I feel that Halo Infinite is the better game… but it gets repetitive after hour 6. Meanwhile Halo 4 tried so hard to be Call of Duty and essentially became a Normie Cover shooter basically playing it too safe. The story of 4 was just… kinda horrendous. And Halo 5. We don’t need to elaborate it tried way too hard to be Titanfall.

I agree with your take on Halo 3 the original one lol the story really was a step down and poorly paced compared to do and this comes from a diehard halo fan. Gameplay is alright nothing ground breaking compared to CE or Infinite on polish and good design. I respect your opinions man and loved the video

Just finished the Halo CE segment, and I gotta say I completely agree with all of your criticisms. Halo MCC was by far the biggest gaming disappointment of my life. The games just aren't fun or well designed.
I even played all of CE co-op after playing through it SP and it still was a slog. One of the most overrated series ever.
